As the first event held by the newly established South West and South Wales Recruitment Society, it was an undeniable success. Entering a room filled with lively chatter, curiosity took hold. It was easy to see why this event was so popular.

Having held the position of the unemployed yet determined (and increasingly frantic) job-hunting graduate not so long ago, I can appreciate the predicament that is currently facing the UK’s new and, indeed not-so-new, graduates. A predicament that is encompassed by a mixture of continual rejection, thoughtless companies that fail to acknowledge your painstakingly thought-out application and, the ever so occasional, ecstatic jumping up and down as you’re invited to an…

This morning I awoke to learn that Tropical Storm Issac had knocked out power at home and the office. For a storm so feared by many and covered so thoroughly by the media, this result was a minor inconvenience. In fact, it gave my wife, Holly, and I the perfect excuse to walk to the restaurant in our neighborhood for breakfast, allowing us to enjoy some “bonus” time together. What a truly awesome thing to have no power!
Yes, Issac is a serious storm that’s having an impact on many…

I was recently unemployed; and my job search seemed to be everyone's business. Now that is not necessarily a bad thing, unless it involves your mother. Now Mom was herself once in the very trenches of which I was trying to return. Truth be told she toted some prestige with her own career back in the day. And that day was ...well...when women wore nylons (egad!) to work.…

Regardless of how modern we feel filtering our lives through social media, we remain emotional beings. And because of that, we still measure the success of our social interactions through the prism of popularity.
We’re fascinated with who got the most hits on YouTube. We drool over Justin Bieber’s 26 million “followers” on Twitter or Kim Kardashian’s handbag…

If people are a company's key to gaining competitive advantage, then this is the area where an employer brand strategy should be looking to generate the most traction.
To place the sole responsibility for your employer brand strategy with one department, be that HR or Marketing makes no sense at all. This is a shared responsibility and so needs a shared involvement. How many CFO's or COO do you know that have involvement in their company's employer brand strategy? Then ask why it is…

Was talking to a neighbor about work and she mentioned that my job must be easy as they are tons of people out of work.
My response was that the skill sets that my clients are looking for (right now mostly CPA with Big 4 experience & Chemical Engineers) that most of those candidates are currently working.
She then said that the recruiters role was to "get candidates jobs".
What do you think is the recruiters role?

Every recruiter everywhere is doing everything they can to drum up new clients—and keep existing ones.
Should that include making client visits? If so, how many client visits should recruiters make?
To be sure, there are many factors involved. Below are a few:
1.The industry and niche in which the recruiter works
2.The business model of the recruiting firm
3. The…

Are you pondering whether or not you are a trusted advisor to your client? If so – then STOP pondering, the answer is likely “no”. If you are viewed by your client as a trusted advisor, it's obvious and you don’t have to think about it. It’s odd to me that in my 16 years in executive search (on both the agency side as well as on the inside within corporate America), I can count on one hand the number of clients that authentically view me as their search trusted…

For nearly every recruiting organization, the corporate Career Siteis their recruiting hub. It’s the one place that all the online recruitment activities point back to and where candidates ultimately end up when they are looking for and applying for employment opportunities.

By Carmen Lapham, Director of Recruiting and Operations, Q4B
A colleague of mine recently had a birthday. He is an avid reader and a beer guy who borders on being a beer snob. His wife gave him a book for the occasion entitled 300 Beers To Try Before You Die by Roger Protz. He calls it his beer bucket list (although he would refuse to drink any of his beers from a bucket) and after paging through the book he discovered a few things.
Over the years he thought he…
