"Making Talent a Strategic Priority": Thoughts From the Fringe (Part 1)

The new McKinsey Quarterly came out today, and thus, it is a good day. Of particular interest is the article titled, "Making Talent A Strategic Priority", by Guthridge, Komm, and Lawson. For those of you who, much like me, have trouble digesting 3,000 any later than 2 hours post-coffee (or Green Tea for the caffeniatically-challenged), I'm going to translate and focus on those elements to… Continue

Analyzing Body Language

I'm a fan of the neo-necon. She's a psychotherapist who was raised as Democrat but swung to the centre-right. So, she's not voting for Obama.

The other day, she analyzed his body posture. I initially said that her comments were the product of pure bias but she challenged my opinion so I had a second look and think that it might be of interest to us as recruiters.…

More Ways to SCAMPER for a Job

Recently, I wrote about how to use three principles from the book,

"Thinkpak: A Brainstorming Card Deck," by Michael Michalko, to find work

faster.

To recap, Michalko's book helps you brainstorm solutions by forcing you to

look at problems in nine different ways, arranged around the mnemonic SCAMPER.

They are: Substitute; Combine; Adapt; Modify or Magnify; Put to other uses;

Eliminate; Reverse or Rearrange.

This time, I'll apply the last four… Continue

Winds of change

I ran across an article that was written a while ago but it caught my attention nonetheless. The article was titled “The Dirty Dozen Dangerous Online Job Search Assumptions” and it can be found on job-hunt.org. It is riddled with comments about the job boards’ inability to ensure that the companies that advertise thru them are real or that the job positions for that matter are real.

The article went on to recommend the use of an identity suppressed or cyber-safe resume. As I was… Continue

Network of Value?

I don’t know what’s more difficult; trying to help the unemployed IT pro’s out there find quality jobs that align well with their career direction or telling them that I can’t help them because they enlisted the help of there spouse, friend or neighbor, and have had their resume forwarded around to many of the potential jobs before I ever spoke with them.

I know that every self proclaimed job search expert will tell you that “networking” is the best way to get a job, but what they… Continue

"Big Picture" comment

Reading John Sumser's "big picture" post today reminded me of a show I saw last night on Nova - there was a segment about a young MIT roboticist Karl Iagnemma, who moonlights as an acclaimed fiction writer. Interesting, because it explored how one person could have two successful careers and how one career impacted the other. I would have posted this on John's wordpress site… Continue

Web-Based Employer/Candidate Database & Profiling System for Sale

My former company developed a unique candidate database/profiling system to meet the needs of our growing executive search/staffing firm. The company has since closed (I now work independently), but I still own the rights to the software and wish to sell it. This web-based profiling system is perfect for a staffing firm with multiple recruiters or with a bit of tweaking and refinement, could be used as a job board.

This system is truly the first of it's kind because it allows all… Continue

As Legal Recruiters, Do We Practice What We Preach?

I am going to state from the begining that this blog, or as they say in legal land, "blawg", will be more of a train of thought. My apologies from the start. I usually write my blogs in Word and then copy the blog to the posting site. However, this blog was screaming to get out. I think it has something to do with my new self reflection approach to life.

As a legal recruiter, I am sitting back and trying not to panic at the state of the legal market. The talk of major New York… Continue

Please Remove the Pirate Hat........

In this generation of Millienials, fashion forward companies, and casual days extending far beyond Friday – I’ve found these past few years a surge toward a new interview attire spotted with individualism, artistic expression, and an emphasis on reflecting personal style. We’ve all had the candidate who showed up wearing something completely inappropriate – flips flops, Technicolor t-shirts, jeans, short skirts, torn pants, etc…. The list goes on and on.

However, the more I think… Continue

What the Boy Scouts taught me about Recruiting

What the Boy Scouts taught me about Recruiting

by: Art Pitcher

A short but sweet reminder to those of you who make it difficult for the rest of us.

When I was in the Boy Scouts I learned a thing or two about making sure whoever follows me feels warm and invited. What I mean is this:

When Camping, I learned that after I COMPLETELY extinguish my fire and clean up ALL my trash from my campsite, I should leave a nice little pile of wood and… Continue

How Not to Get an Interview

Article Title: How Not to Get an Interview

Author Byline: Mary White, M.A., SPHR

Author Website:

People spend a lot of time talking and thinking about what they can do to find and obtain their ideal job. Unfortunately, they don't always stop and think about the things that they are doing that keep them from accomplishing this goal. One faux pas in the job search process can negate the effects of fifty things you do right.… Continue

Tags vs. folders

According to website del.icio.us, "Folders were the old way to organize your bookmarks. They were great if you only had a few bookmarks and a few folders, but as your collection grew, it became harder and harder to decide what goes where. Delicious has a new and better way: tags."

Tags were also popularized by Flickr - the photo sharing website - as a way in which to categorize photos - who's in them, when they were taken, where they were taken, by season, holiday, event type, etc. -… Continue

Associate Disloyalty and What It Means For Diversity Recruitment

Anyone in the legal industry who hasn’t been under a rock for the past forty-some odd years can tell you that the legal profession has changed. Attorney loyalties to one employer throughout one’s career no longer exist. Gone are the days where attorneys graduated from law school and went to work for an employer where they remained until the close of their career. Nowadays, it’s not surprising to hear of attorneys that have worked for four or five different employers during the course of their… Continue
