C’s Make Degrees. Are You Filtering Good Candidates With GPAs Below 3.0?

For those of us who have been required, scratch that, privileged, enough to recruit college students, screening resumes can be…interesting. You scan a resume, review the candidate’s education, and notice they conveniently left off their GPA. Uh-oh. They might as well list “didn’t study enough” under the activities and interests section. What is often overlooked, however, is for those that may not have studied as hard, the extracurricular activities list is typically in abundance.…

New Optimism for Recruiting. Same Old Recruiting Budget?

Over the past month or so, I have spoken with startups, staffing firms, software players, a couple of hospitals and even some HR vendors. People are seeing signs of life and there is optimism in their voices. People are feeling good, and I don’t expect this good feeling to fade along with our summer tans. There WILL be momentum in recruiting this fall, and this is good news for job seekers, HR executives, recruiters and the economy.

Why am I… Continue

D M J R M

You probably thought that I just gave you my password to my CRM system. If only it

were that easy to remember. No, the letters above stand for something much more

valuable than a password. They stand for perhaps the most important question a

good business leader should always be able to answer. They also stand for the

one question every employee should be asking of their employer and should

demand an answer from…

Show Your Skills And Experience From a Video Resume

Video resumes are growing in popular with time and job candidates find this a useful method to stand out from the crowd. It is basically an opportunity for candidates to demonstrate your professional skills and good communication skills. Recruiters and employers are more likely to remember what they see than what they read in a text resume. Another benefit of video resume is that hat they are recorded, and can easily be forwarded to hiring managers,…

Online Recruitment and the Social Opportunity

Day 9 - Deep Breathing and a Breath of Reality in #myjobhunt

After yesterday’s (ok earlier today but still Day 8) comments about optimism, disappointment and realistic expectations it won’t surprise you to know that I was a bit frustrated today with a feeling of impatience and yes, a little disappointment. This was despite reflection and writing Day 8 first thing today. Maybe it was to be expected.

Therefore…

Day 8 - 1 Step Backwards – 2 Steps Forwards, #myjobhunt

This is supposed to be my Day 8, but due to social activities at the end of said day I have to write it at the very start of Day 9 and before I do anything else.

It is hard to reflect on Day 8 and get myself into the right frame of mind to write about it. 2-3 minutes jotting down all of the key points from yesterday put some order to it though and a different perspective.

It has to be said that the first few hours was spent doing a load of housekeeping, filing (yeah right… Continue

Day 10 - Friday 13th, Interviews, new shoes and wet suits #myjobhunt

I have now been actively looking for a new job for 2 whole weeks. This is Day 10. I’m counting the days as those on which I actively seek work, or at least should be. 2 weeks wow!! I remember sitting in the office on my last day thinking it is so cool to have August off – I can enjoy the summer and relax. I expect this is pretty much how everyone else would react too.…

Day 6 - Mondays; Another Start to New Opportunities in #myjobhunt

I hear you asking “where did Day 6 go” on Saturday? Well it went fishing; yup I had a day off from #myjobhunt

And a very pleasant 7 hours it was too. The fish thought so too, they were quite comfortable at the bottom of the lake, not giving my flies a second glance. Well one did and I bet all its buddies were having a right laugh at it.…

Day 5 - London's Calling - but using Twitter, LinkedIn & Facebook for #myjobhunt

So this was the first day that I wasn’t going to turn on a PC all day and thus would have to rely for the most part on email and the phone, although with my iPhone I wasn’t going to be too far out of the loop. At the moment that is a good thing I can tell you.

So, where to start?

Over the last couple of days I have met a number of people as you will have…

Be a hiring machine - Part 3: Every Interview Must Include Marketing

Interviewing is certainly the process by which we make the determination to hire someone. However, there is also a critical component to this process—creating interest in potential employees. If we think back to the Four F’s (Find, Filter, Face and Finish) we will remember that Face is the process of interviewing. Just as bad filtration will lead to poor interview success, a lack of effective marketing will lead to poor acceptance ratios in the Finish cycle.

Is Vendor/Supplier Compliance getting the attention it deserves?

In Canada it is safe to assume that more than half of organizations do not carry measures to assess compliance with their Suppliers. Much of the time to manage documents is via filing cabinets; excel spreadsheets, or in-house databases. Lack of confidence in reporting tools is a good sign that their systems, or lack there of is not dependable.…

Social Media for Recruiting – Post and Pray approach?

Every decade brings a new buzzword with itself. This one brings – “Social Media”…

Early-users has definitely started calling it ALA “Dot Com Bubble” of internet. We have to remember that it merely serves as a “Tool” and not as an entire “Strategy” with a stand-alone usage.
