An interesting topic I have been wrangling recently is the convergence of Corporate Social Media and Corporate Social Recruiting. While the two seem to align perfectly with each other, they are proving more and more difficult to sync up. One would think, at least this one person, that social recruiting and social media have the same end goal in mind, but the problem is aligning the social strategy to new talent and aligning the social strategy to new clients is very different. This can lead…

There are thousands of job boards to choose from if you need to post a job. But not all are created equal. Here are some telltale signs that the job board you are about to post on is worth using.
1. It Looks Good: If the job board has good design, meaning a nice logo and well done interface with clearly spelled out call to actions and navigation.
2. Contact Info: If the job board puts their phone and email in a prominent place…

I tried to make a point at the recent #SRCONF that, when it comes to the employer brand, size no longer matters. Big is not longer beautiful. Money no longer talks - people do. Judging by the looks on the faces of the audience I failed miserably.
Ultimately I was trying to make the point that the new social order completely democratises the…

This was the wise advice of an old manager of mine at Solutions Partners a few years back, when the economic circumstances hit close, after my hours were cut when the permanent job orders that were 70% of my employer's business at Solutions Partners became less and less in demand. It was on a bright and sunny day walking in Los Gatos, with Nathan North who provided such wisdom at the time, and said the economic storm will pass and "When in Doubt: Enjoy the Journey" - I couldn't help but…

Social media has created a new means of communication. We can correspond with current friend and get in touch with old acquaintances and new people with whom we may share a common interest. through social media we can comment on products and services and generally vent about our weekends, are lifestyle, our job, our manager, and the working environment.
Social media is an outlet. It is also a tripwire. Today, employers review job applicant's social media. They search for behavior…

A two part blog .....
I speak to agency recruiters all day ......some approach me looking for a new role and others are recipients of a headhunting call. Something that I am hearing more and more these days is the following sentence (or a version of):
"Have you got any roles in internal recruitment"
Fair enough. However, the majority of people that give me this response are not able to provide any well considered reasons for…

Within 2 weeks of its launch, Google+ had more than 5 million users, according to a recent article in
PC World, and was the hot topic for days on technology blogs, business sites, and Facebook and Twitter feeds. That’s nowhere near the 200 million members of Twitter or 750 million of Facebook, but give it time. Like its social networking cousins, Google+ has the potential to affect business, but what effect will Google+ have on the recruiting world?
We already know the benefits…

Successful recruiters, this article is not meant for you. The list outlined below is your mantra, your daily routine with your clients. You know that recruitment is a relationship based business, and that you are only as good as the relationships that you have built and nurtured with your hiring managers.
- Know their business. You can’t expect them to invest in you until you have invested in them. Go to their department and or sales…

Not sure how everyone else feels about the many posts and articles circulating on “tough interview” questions. What I have noticed is that many seem to have a bit of a rinse and repeat rhythm to them – same questions reworded. Here are a few of the commonly suggested tough interview questions:
- What would you say are your strengths? What are your weaknesses?
- Why should we hire you?
- Give us an example where you encountered a disagreement with a…

Sorry I missed you guys last week. I took a little vacation from Grandma's Chicken Soup, but I am here this week with an extra serving of online recruitment headlines from the past two weeks.

Note to recruiters: I wrote this for job seekers, but I think you'll find it interesting.
If you’re part of the 97% of the US population with a cell phone, you most likely use it for more than phoning. And if you’re part of the burgeoning subset with an iPhone, Android, or other smartphone, I can guarantee that you use it for all sorts of serious (and silly) stuff.
Looking for work (or keeping your fingers on your neck of the employment market) is possible on a smart…

Ask most salespeople and they’ll tell you they engage in consultative selling. When asked how they accomplish this or ways in which they measure the effectiveness of their consultative approach, you’ll often get a convoluted answer at best. The reality is consultative selling has become another of the buzz words that people apply to a sales process that is anything but fully consultative.
To test if you are being a consultant versus just selling, try the following:
1.…

This is a great and quick look at where I think we are right now in regard to business conditions. For some time I have thought that we are much like Japan, 20 years later. They peaked in 1989 with a huge bubble and an older population, way too much leverage. 22 years later, there has been no real recovery from that. Not a depression, just a long malaise.
We peaked in '07. I don't think we have gone through any real deleveraging yet. To me it looks like we have a long road ahead,…

Achieving organizational alignment is a strategic HR activity that can deliver significant benefits to an organization. Alignment is more than ideal state. It is imperative to ensure the organization is successful in getting all employees to move into the same direction, to achieve the vision of the organization.
Alignment is one of the power words in an organizational change consultant’s toolkit. Hardly a day goes by that I don’t use or refer to alignment.
Some years ago, I…

Have you ever seen a resume so bad or a candidate doing something so foolish that you wanted to blurt out something that had more obscene than non-obscene words? Of course you have, but if you took the time to provide feedback on every bad resume or poor interview, no work would get done. While most of us don't have the time to do this, I wanted to publicly recognize someone who does. His name is Foster Williams. Foster actively assists…
