July Employment Data = No Improvement Again

The Bureau of Labor Statistics recently released its data for the month of July and the numbers were as flat as everybody expected. Oh, there was some giddiness in the press, but I read that as more a response to the poor economic (and governmental) news of late than as an honest assessment of the employment situation. Because, in fact, the employment situation has not really… Continue

An Insider's Opinion Regarding Corporate and Agency Recruiters

First, let me explain that I spent several years earning my chops as an agency recruiter at some really small shops. This meant I was always fighting an uphill battle against the big boys in the space that had name recognition, a volume over margin focus, and huge databases. I was able to parlay that experience with a Masters Degree in Human Resource Development in order to switch over to the dark side of corporate recruiting and HR. What I have learned in making this switch has been…

A less than perfect economy (especially after a 15% US stock market decline in just 2 weeks !!) affects every type of business including recruiting.  Yet in every down economy there are always a number of companies in every industry who find a way to thrive.  With this in mind, I spent some time recently researching all the creative ways recruiters were finding,… Continue

If You Build It Candidates Will Come - Mobile Edition

I recently had an experience that I thought I would share with those of you who are interested in trying to take advantage of the growing demographic of mobile users who are job seekers...

I recently stopped at one of our local fast food restaurants (name withheld to protect the innocent). I was going through the drive-thru, and noticed that their menu board also advertised the jobs at the restaurant. In fact, the sign said that I could go to their website and apply online! Since I… Continue

A Quirky Opening in the Newark Job Market

This is one of those stories where it can be seen either as a sad commentary on urban America or a hopeful spot in the American job market.  The Newark, New Jersey City Government approved a new law requiring small restaurants in the city to have an armed guard on the premises, during the evening hours.  This comes in the wake of a drive-by shooting at a Newark restaurant where an off-duty police officer was killed.

According to the article on Reuters, any restaurant serving fifteen…

Today's Economy - Is There Hope?

It is without a doubt one of the most historic times of our economic windfall.  Everywhere you look there is doom and gloom discussion, individuals getting overwhelmed, and political rumblings, and a historic downgrade of the US credit rating.  The Dow dropped 600+ points, but yet there is still hope.

We need to look long and hard these days at giving individuals hope.  Is there any wonder that the Recruiting/Staffing professional of today can be a powerful voice that gets…

Nimble and Decisive

Reaching the final plan to raise the debt ceiling in the United States last week was anything but nimble and decisive decision making. As the dust settles from this fiasco, those of us running companies can learn from the example set in Washington of how not to create compromise, consensus, and buy-in.

Nimble and decisive leadership starts with a clear vision of the desired outcomes and engages input from the key stakeholders who constantly keep their sights tuned and focused on the… Continue

Is threre really a war for talent or are Recruiters playing the shuffle game?

I guess the title is self explanatory. Companies are far less looking at recruiters to assess potential candidates. All they want is to steal from their competitors. If a recruiter works a certain niche market, he/she can make a good living just shuffling one person over to the competitor. Once that candidate has been with the competitor for 2-3 years (maybe more), the recruiter than takes that same candidate and shuffles him off to another competitor. There is no really 'assessment' of…

Tips on how to choose an appropriate RPO partner:

Tips on how to choose an appropriate RPO partner:

1. Specific or general?

If your recruitment needs are fairly general then you should look at a broad range of agencies. However, if you are in a highly specialized industry or require someone with very specific skills you need a sector specific agency.

2. Check their screening process!

You are paying for a service to save you time and money - you do not want to be wading through CVs that are not…

Your Brand is only as Good as Your Weakest Link…Guess Who?

Look in the mirror and ask yourself -“Can I perform my duties to the best of my abilities today? Or is this going to be one of those rare days that I am just going to go through the motions?” Answer honestly, because that will set the tone for your day as well as set your mind-set (good or bad).

If you genuinely believe that you will be successful today, then you will feel a little glow of positive energy which should carry you through the day…
