And now You’re Director of Talent Management!

Its 5 am on Monday morning and you’re up ... But Holdup! (My Jamaican expression for wait a minute) You don’t get up this early on a Monday for work, after all you’re one of the Recruitment Player Veterans who normally strolls in at 10am for work after you’ve had your work out at the gym, Juice, coffee and bagel with cream cheese; oh yea let`s not forget your morning newspaper...…

RPO - THE ENEMY OF AGENCIES? THAT'S JUST NOT CRICKET!

A fellow recruiter I bumped into the other day was giving me their twopence worth on the current state of play in recruitment and the world in general. The upshot being, what on EARTH was I thinking in looking to collaborate with the enemy. For enemy, read RECRUITMENT PROCESS OUTSOURCING.…

Understanding the Roles of Others in the Workplace: “Trading Places”

When I traveled this previous weekend, I found myself sitting on the plane, stumped on what to write for my next post. A sheet of paper lay bare on the drop-down tray in front of me and a fresh ballpoint pen in my hand and I started thinking, “I wonder what it would be like to work on a plane? What if I were the one giving emergency flight instructions while graciously suggesting specials on the beverage menu? How would customers treat me? What kinds of challenges would I have to deal with?”…

Don't Lose Your Star Performers: How CIOs Can Retain Top IT Talent

As the economy gains momentum, IT professionals will have greater job opportunities, increasing the risk of turnover. In fact, employee retention is a concern many CIOs are struggling with today. In a recent survey, 43 percent of CIOs said that keeping existing workers is their top staffing priority.

When you think of retaining employees, no doubt the first people to come to mind are your top performers. In good times, retaining top IT talent is a high priority for CIOs. But even…

Your Online Image - The Real Job Board

By Tim Yandel

Remember when using the internet while at work was restricted? You know, the dark days when you only had a few sites you could go to that

were "allowed" in your organization and any attempt to educate the

Internet Warden (boss) was a disaster that ended up backfiring in some

ridiculous way that you never saw coming. I'm not talking about porn

sites here, but the new "social networking" fad that everyone… Continue

The (IT) job offer is all in the timing

Though it may sound cliché, timing really is everything when you’re searching for an IT job. After reading a blog earlier this week which encouraged job seekers to consider timing during the job search, our… Continue

Has HR Traded Do'ers for Managers?

What ever happened to core business competencies?! Bret Starr of StarrTincup will be releasing a survey of HR professionals focused on their view of the HR-vendor relationship and value proposition. I was shocked to learn that only 6% of all HR professionals surveyed stated that it was better to develop solutions internally than go to a vendor for help. All I could think to myself was that our businesses have become full of managers at the expense of do’ers.

I worry that entry level… Continue

17 ways an in-house recruiter can build a better relationship with external recruiters

I was inspired and motivated into penning this post thanks to a super observational as well as ammusingly written piece written by @recruitgal on her experiences with some of the John Wayne types from the agency side of recruitment. I've just subscribed to her blog and recommend anyone…

I can’t leave unless it’s for a Promotion…Really?

Last week toward the end of my blog I was commenting on how the most liked people, not always the most gifted people, receive promotions. I intimated that I was going to expand on that topic this week. That comment was in response to the number of candidates who

have told me that they can’t make a move unless they get a promotion. I typically say something like, “OK, but I’m

not sure I understand, can you explain what you mean?” They think I’m a bit off at this…

50 Reasons to be Inspired as an Intern

Sometimes life as an Intern is hard.

However, as we approach Thanksgiving it seems like a good time to write down a few ideas on why interns – a growing percentage of the

workforce – could be thankful for as they dutifully fulfill their intern

responsibilities.

From the intern perspective (and with tongue firmly in cheek) YouTern presents…

The Customer is NOT Always Right!!

Recruiting and sales; or Sales and recruiting. Which comes first and which is more important? Whether we wish to admit it, both are part of the very same industry, just at differing degrees on the scale. Just because you are a great recruiter doesn't mean you'll have a long career as a salesperson and the same can be said about Sales People potentially not doing well recruiting others. If you happen to be one of those rare few that can do both, and do them well--Congratulations!

Both…

RE: the counter offer

This is one of the ugliest issues we have to deal with in our profession. I have worked both as an executive recruiter and on the inside as a VP of Human Resources. Having been on both sides of the desk there are few things more damaging than loosing a candidate to a counter offer. Without going through all of the issues i.e. (lost time, creatability, money, etc.) I tackle this issue right up front. One of the first things I tell my candidate to do if they indicate any interest in entertaing… Continue

Conducting Legal Background Checks on Contractors

It is standard operating procedure for many, if not most, employers to check the criminal backgrounds of their new direct-hires. But as contractors increasingly are filling vital roles in organizations that require them to have access to sensitive information, it is important that their criminal backgrounds also be checked . . . and that the proper procedure is followed when those checks are conducted.

When an employer uses an outside vendor to conduct…

Hiring The Right Personality

A large part of the human capital supply chain is the acquisition and sourcing of many talents – but the process of obtaining these assets in the first place is also an important detail. Resumes are read, interviewees are spoken to, and decisions are made. Quality hiring practices are too frequently abandoned because of the inconvenience of finding the proper employee in a sufficient amount of time. There are a number of ways to ease the process and the one I’m addressing today is…

Preparing for Counter Offers before they Occur!

Slouch’s blog post on “ A Counter Offer of Biblical Proportions” enticed me to share some thoughts on why it’s important to deal with the Counter Offer issue very early on in the recruitment cycle; regardless of whether or not your candidate will get a Counter Offer.…
