Employment Brand and The Emperor's New Clothes

There is a great post on the LinkedIn Blog about some research they did on employer brand. You can read whole post, but here are the key findings:

  • The cost per hire is over 2 times lower for companies with strong employer brands
  • Companies with…

Candidates vs. Employers: Who’s screening who?

You post a job.  Candidates apply.  And this is where the screening process begins for most recruiting organizations.  First, recruiters filter through resumes in their ATS to find qualified candidates to interview.  Second, they interview the best candidates and progress them into more interviews if needed.  Lastly, they take all the information available to them (from both recruiters & hiring managers) to decide which interviewee is hired at the company.

This screening…

How can you possibly run your business this way???

Imagine running a business where you have no idea where revenue comes from or your associated cost to generate it (AKA: expenses). Imagine running a business where you have no idea what your profit margin is? Crazy, right? Well guess what; that’s the way most of you run your business.

To be specific, most recruiters have no idea how to or chose not to use the most important tools on a regular basis, analytics to determine where business comes from and how much money is made. Now,…

10 Ways to Source your Applicant Tracking System

Sometimes the answer is right under your nose. (Hats off to those that made Movemeber a success!)

In recruiting we can’t all grow mustaches, but we can look at the applicant pool “just under our noses”. I pulled statistics on our myStaffingPro applicant tracking client base, and I found…

Don 't Let the Penn State Sex Scandal Happen to Your Place of Business

In some ways avoiding the kind of  abusive and criminal sex practices that have been plaguing Penn State University is a fairly easy task.  It is a matter of conducting background checks not only for pre-employment screening but periodically to determine if your staff has been convicted of any criminal and sexual offenses.  But then what about the first timers?  Or, rather, those who were never caught?

Determining whether sex abuses are taking place, particularly in the employment…

Where is Technology going?

Things get smaller, faster, and more expensive in some cases. I was watching Predator 2 and was surprised by how they had to use pay phones or be by a phone to communicate. How did life work when there were only VCRs and simple TV remotes? When our children have children, will there be something so beyond our comprehension? Time will tell.

What is more important to our society, ease of use or power of functionality? I believe it lies in the middle. People interact more freely and…

Really think about this question...and answer it.

Do you actually sit down and determine your return on investment and opportunity costs of every source you use to run your desk: ATS, job boards, directories, etc.?

Interview Preparation Tips

Preparation for an interview can be one of the most important things you do during your job search. I am not talking about having your suit dry-cleaned; I am talking about being ready for anything the interview may bring.  Take the time needed to prepare and follow these simple tips:

1. Why did you apply for this job?  You should have a well outlined answer to this question.  Think about what attracted you to the job posting, what tasks get you excited, and the skills you want…

The Artwork Affliction

Like the artwork on the walls of your home or office, most people eventually stop noticing the details that surround them. That is why saavy manufacturers, such as Coca-Cola and Pepsi, periodically repackage their products to ensure they keep our interest.

Your prospects and clients will stop paying attention to the details of your business unless you repackage what you do from time to time. This includes marketing materials, questions asked, websites, talking points, blogs, and…

Respect #1

I’ve titled this blog in this way as it is the first in a short series of tales that all left me with the same feeling; that I need to increase people’s respect of me and what I do.

The in-house recruiter

A lot has been written about the relative skills of the external recruiter versus the in-house recruitment manager and I don’t intend to enter too deeply into this debate except to share an annoying thing that…

Save time - increase business

Do you have a worksheet? As a busy recruiter, you are probably aware that systems and processes make your life easier, but it strikes me as funny the number of recruiters that don’t actually have a working job order, or worse still a job order that is not working effectively!

There are 2 main purposes to a job order, most recruiters think there is only one, to gain the information for the vacancy in a clear and detailed manner; but the other important part of the job order is to…

“Search Friction” wins Nobel Prize for Economics

How often does a Nobel prize relate to your daily work? I'm thrilled to report that this week's Nobel Prize in Economics was awarded to three brilliant professors who have changed the way the world looks at employment. Classic supply and demand theory would say that when the number of jobs available (demand) and number of people searching (supply) is equal, there should be zero unemployment. But we all know that it doesn't work that way.

Professors Peter A.…
