After sharing with everyone some of the crap that comes out of candidates during the interview process, I thought I should even it up with some b******s from the recruiters angle!! Of course this is all hearsay (!!), as I just can't believe we have been known to use any of these, can you??!! Go on, how many have you heard us utter?
Anyone who has been involved in recruitment, agency or client side will have heard most if not all of these in their time. They are of course statements from candidates to recruiters that are of course blatant b******s!! So you fellow recruiter, how many of these can you say you have heard?
I need to speak with my wife = It's a no
I'm perfect for the role = You can't afford me
Can you call me back in ten minutes..... so I have time to…

I read a blog today that threw out the "BIG R" word - it posed the question "so, are we in a recession". So what do I think? Q1 certainly didn't set the world on fire for us. We're a contingency IT services firm in the midwest. We service a variety of industries but two of them are "early adoptors" of a recession (marketing agency & print/publishing). Both are struggling to hit numbers.
So, are we in a recession or not? I'll tell you at the end of Q2.
listening to a certain satellite radio program this morning, one of the key players, who notoriosly sleeps through shows, fell asleep today. the show personalities made particular fun of him today and it was quite entertaining......now, my blog is not about the show, but it does bring up a great question, What to do with employees who clearly show up for work physically but not mentally?
I would rather see a manager send a person home who has not made the committment to be at work… Continue

What do you do when a candidate simply disappears? It’s happened to me twice this month: I screen them up front, they’re all excited about the opportunity, they go to the interview…and then nothing. No returned calls, no emails about taking another job, nothing. It's hard enough to find good candidates at all these days, what can I do to keep this from happening again?
From my University of Chicago Alumni Magazine comes the following research article about four-year-college enrollment amongst diversity candidates. The lessons can be applied, as well, to recruiting.
When Dreams Aren't Enough: What Keeps High-Schoolers from College
Only 59 percent of Chicago high-schoolers who aspire to a four-year college actually apply--and fewer still enroll. In a three-year study released in March, SSA professor Melissa Roderick reports that many… Continue

It seems as though so many want a piece of us all these days and we have to carefully pick and choose where we commit our time. Today I finally acted on Dave Mendoza's strong urging to join recruiting.blogs.com. Actually it was more like threat-o-gram, but very effective even without the possibility of getting hurt and knowing Dave isn't a menacing type guy. But no way would I want him to give up on me and throw me out like week-old trash, like his last message eluded. Up until now, it was a… Continue

When I sold the domain name Recruiting.com to Jobster two years ago or so, I never really thought I would see the day where the opportunity may present itself to maybe somehow buy it back.
Now I have no indication at all from Jobster that they are looking to sell the domain name but they know that I am interested in getting that name back and into the hands of… Continue
So the interview is going well - You're in top management and have led behavioral interviews in the past. All indications are that you're knocking it dead . . . and then the person on the other end of the line (or across the table) drops a bomb:
"If you were an animal, what kind would you be?"
OR
"If you came back to life as an animal, which would you come back as?"
OR
"If you were to by chance, be reincarnated, would there be an animal you'd like to come… Continue

Talent Acquisition departments, particularly those that have a segmented Soucing function (parent-child relationship), may stand to benefit from the briefing of General Petraeus to Congress today regarding progress in Iraq, notably the "Surge". Why? Because an underlying issue that confounds Talent Acquisition is the same elephant in the room that all Statisticians (and literally at the very moment I write this… Continue
So you’re the CEO of a company and you need to beef up recruiting. You can always take the easy way out and just pawn it off on recruiting or HR, but in this ultra-competitive landscape that’s unfortunately just not going to net you the best people. In today’s marketplace, where great candidates have options up to their eyeballs and are well-paid and well-retained, leaders need to ensure they are doing everything in their power to make sure their company is attracting all of the top candidates… Continue

I’m sorry, but in working a recent recruiting effort for a mid-level developer I’ve run across a string of applicants that while their age indicates adulthood, their career actions precludes them from inclusion.
Understand this isn’t a bias that I have against younger generations as this is about how your actions show the world what’s important to you (quote of the day), and by no means am I saying that these people aren’t responsible human beings in other aspects of their lives.… Continue
“Jealousy is the tribute mediocrity pays to excellence.”
Sadly, many people are jealous of (some even hate) anyone who wants to be or achieve more and they will do almost anything to bring everyone down to their level.
Because of their own mediocrity and failure these people discourage success.
