By this time, we’ve all heard about the Millennial generation or Gen Y. We know about Helicopter Parents (or worse, Blackhawk parents), entitlement issues, and the fact that they’re all what we’d consider “digital natives.” Yep – Gen Y has never known the world without the internet. We’re different than any other generation. Yes, you heard me right. We. I’m a Millennial too. …

I was in an interesting Client meeting last week, getting feedback on a candidate who had been through 2 interviews and had 3 reference checks taken.
‘Craig,’ the client began, ‘We’re not going to proceed with John….. We just don’t believe he makes the boat go faster…’
Did he just say what I thought he’d said? Make the boat go faster?? Last time I looked John was neither a Mercury 150hp outboard, nor an America’s Cup sailing want-to-be….
My obvious confusion…

One of the beauties of contract placements is that they happen FAST. Often interviews are conducted over the phone, and the contractor is at work within in a matter of days rather than the weeks or even months it can take with direct hires.
But don't let the quick nature of contract placements cause you or your clients to overlook legal interviewing techniques. According to attorney Lisa Yankowitz, one staffing company learned this the hard way, settling a disability…

LinkedIn is the No. 1 Recruitment Social Recruitment Network in the world. That is the fact. There is no one in the recruitment social networking space that managed to do anything similar on the global space. And there is no shortage of well-funded start-ups who would love to take a bite at that business. When you think online social recruitment – you think of…

Who – me? You’re asking me if I’m a good fit for your job?
Well gimme a minute. You know what I do, right? I’m a recruiter! Nearly every person who follows you is a recruiter, resume coach, PR firm, ATS guy or HR lady. This is one giant fishbowl of people who DO NOT do what your client needs. So why do you keep up the exercise?
Remember waaaaaaaayyyy back a few years ago before social media? Remember how you actually had to put together a…

Have you noticed how terrible most job postings are? Not very many stand out from the thousands of computer generated/outdated job descriptions from stuffy HR departments. Your postings tell candidates an awful lot about your company as soon as they see it. Will they read on or will they just jump to the next one that appears on their screen. Candidates deduce rightly or…

As a new member, this post is intended as an introduction.
At New Negotiator, my work is all about preparation. It accounts for 80% of what I do with a candidate.
Preparation begins well before the initial interview with an introduction to the New Negotiator method, its rules, and how the various pieces of the system fit together.
For most candidates this introduction only serves to confuse them. It’s in the actual working of…

When it came to performance management, one of the HR Heads I worked with, used to have a simple formula – reward for past performance & promote or provide a challenge for thepotential. Also when hiring people especially those requiring some level of decision making, a lot of hiring managers look for attitude & character while allowing for shortfall in the…

Lots of employers, listing the top traits that they want in an executive hire, will list both leadership and vision as very important. How often do both of these traits actually exist at a high level in the same individual?
A leader is someone that others follow, so the skill is managing and motivating others. This takes several key abilities:
• Ability to see a…

Yesterday I listened to a recruiter as they were making recruiting calls to NP's. One of the nurses expressed interest and the recruiter conducted a screening interview. The recruiter at the end of the interview "closed" the candidate on how serious they were about making a move, using the following script....
"Jane, sounds like you are a good fit for my client, I can present you there. I would also like to market you to the 100+ other possible employers in your area who…

The Recruiting Animal Show - September 28, 2011
A few people call in to tell us one thing they learned last summer.
Proof that I haven't gone viral: not many people were eager to contribute.
This version does not begin with an ad…

So I had dinner last night with Ice-T and his wife Coco (don't ask). I have to tell you, his candor and his story is remarkable and transferable to the recruitment space.
Ice-T was born in Newark, NJ and moved to the affluent suburb of Summit when he was a child. By the age of 7 both parents had died and he was an orphan. He went to live with his aunt in LA and was set up in a mostly white, affluent school system. He hated taking the bus so he went to a local gang…

World vision Versus Funnel Vision!!
What kind of vision do you use when reviewing resumes or looking at profiles? Do you focus only at the very first few lines? Do you perhaps read the whole thing but only treat each section, each line as an individual entity? If you do that is Funnel vision. Think of a funnel; think you are looking through the big end out of the little end. This allows you to only see a little bit at a time of what…

President Obama now on LinkedIn! Ten short days ago the white house invited LinkedIn to host the President in a town-hall style presentation and Q & A; yesterday it became a reality. The President was seeking out unique ways to promote his up coming job bill, The American Jobs Act. President Obama believes “we need to do more than just recover from this economic crisis – we need to rebuild the economy the American way,… Continue
