If a friend tells you, "You have bad breath"--is she now your enemy?
If an enemy tells you, "Damn, you have bad breath"--is he now your friend?
I say yes, to both questions--because knowing your flaws can enlighten your general and specific outlook about yourself and others. And those who approach you with such insights have personal and professional motives. Your challenge is to decipher the difference.
How this applies to recruitment; the selection…

As a recruiter, it is obviously important that you match an employee and potential employer well. Aside from the obvious issue of compensation, there is the longer term issue of your reputation (you know what I mean - if too many of your placements don't "work out" you end up wearing this reputation and it can be hard to shake).

No such thing as too much communication!!
As with any relationship communication is key. I have found it is far better to over communicate than under communicate. Clients appreciate knowing what is going on and one of the biggest complaints about recruiting is lack of communication. One of the biggest ways to do this is to manage your inbox. Do not let it become overwhelming and a place where emails go to die. Stay on top of it. Respond to…

“It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to your enemies, but a great deal more to stand up to your friends”- Dominique Pirolo, 2011
It is an interesting thought that we would give that much power over our affairs to people who may not always have our best interest at thought.
Dealing with those who go against the grain is nothing new, so to think these individuals will agree to your ideals is quite a stretch. Its those whom we refer to as friends that deserve to be…

On the occasion of a wonderful long weekend dedicated to family, food, and fun it’s imperative to remember what this holiday celebrates. Over the course of generations, Americans have sacrificed their youth, their bodies, and all too often their lives to protect our nation and its citizens. To pay homage to these incredible sacrifices is the very least each of us can offer, but it is even better to try to repay these brave patriots with something more tangible. For those of us involved in…

A few weeks back I started a discussion thread on LinkedIn titled “In-house recruiters rejoice! The cold call is dead. Long live Social Recruitment – Discuss” – It turned out to be a bit of a monster and with 129 comments was the biggest topic in the IOR (Institute of Recruiters) group for approximately 3-4…

As a newbie recruiter I was keen to “cut my teeth” in the industry and “earn my stripes” as quickly as possible, I wanted to be up there with the best of them. As a complete novice I believed that I had to work on anything and everything that came across my desk, no matter how unqualified it was or how many other recruiters were working on the same requirement.
Obviously there are a number of drawbacks with this approach, among them being that you spread yourself to thin, you are…

You gotta love technology. It can make life so simple. Skype with a candidate in another region, reply to an email while you’re away from your desk, then come home and watch last week’s episode of The Voice on your dvr. Sometimes, though, technology can be purely frustrating. A malicious virus infects your hard drive, the internet is down for no apparent reason, and you just plain forget…

“The answer my friend is blowin’ in the wind, the answer is blowin’ in the wind”.
- Bob Dylan
In case you missed it, or were just too busy waiting for the rapture, Bob Dylan turned 70 this past Tuesday, May 24th. In honor of that milestone, I decided to go back and listen again to my extensive collection of Dylan albums and CDs. Every time I listen to Dylan I hear something that I didn’t hear before, a subtle phrase, the…

Remember the old phrase “out with the old, in with the new.” Many organizations live and die by this phrase, always looking for that new initiative that will drive performance even farther.
For recruiting, you are seeing a lot of this as well. There are so many new and innovative recruiting tools out there that recruiting departments are looking at and implementing into their recruitment marketing strategies. And rightfully so.
Companies are looking to…

Facing redundancy can be worrying for a number of reasons – you may not be sure what to do next, and financial concerns are also often an issue. The UDIA has estimated that approximately 40% of the industry has already lost their jobs, so finding another role can be difficult, particularly if you have only had experience in one sector. Don’t take it personally; remember that it was the job that was made redundant, not you. Be sure not to burn your bridges, although you may be upset, it is…

There has been a great deal of criticism of Agency recruiters lately, quite a bit of it from me.
But a recent theme is emerging where Corporate HR managers and internal recruiters have launched some scathing attacks on the process followed by recruiters. A recent blog, Dear John, from…
