HRIS – Picking Up where the ATS Leaves Off

Applicant tracking systems (ATS) are an effective way to post positions, organize candidates and streamline the hiring process. For many HR professionals, ATSs are typically their first experience with new talent management solutions. In my experience, once the value of the ATS has been recognized, there is a spark of consideration for new features, benefits and values that opens up the potential for investing in additional talent management solutions. The question then becomes “where does the… Continue

Year-end is fast approaching and the door will soon close on budget approvals for your 2010 fiscal year. How do you “sell” your leadership on the value of an Applicant Tracking System? When the bottom line is the primary focus, you need to make the case for your ROI on the investment in new software. When compliance is the major issue, you should be able to make that case with ease!

ATS Return on Investment CAN be quantified,… Continue

Talent Scouts: Not Just for Saturdays Anymore!

In keeping with the football theme from last week’s post, not only did I marry a man who loves football, my Father also has a tremendous love of the game. My Dad played for the mighty undefeated Marcellus Mustangs in a suburb of Syracuse, NY in 1963. I can’t tell you how many stories I’ve heard about that team or how certain aspects of how that high school senior year season impacts my dad’s life. Since my dad grew up in the Syracuse area and went to… Continue

How to attract talent - it's still harder than you think!

Yeah there’s a recession, yeah there’s bags of people on the market but I think creative agencies still need to be working harder to attract top talent.

It’s not enough just to exist and expect the best candidates to come to you - and be grateful for a job - they’re still in high demand so you need to do more.

Here are a few ideas:

Career path:

In my experience, prospects (or lack of) have got to be the number one motivator for a job seeker in… Continue

Hiring issues...

I run a mid-sized London based recruitment firm and we are seeing massively increased requirements of hiring from our clients. Now obviously we shoud have hired more in the downturn - but that's not always possible when you work with a PLC dictating hiring rules via yield (and rightly so). How do people hire quickly and effectively without compromising on quality or without throwing too much money at the situation?

Should recruiters develop their own assessment tools or outsource the task?

A few days back, we ran a discussion on several social networking platforms to reach out to the recruiting community and asked them if recruiters should develop their own assessment tools or hire the services of assessment specialists. A strong majority shared the same idea – focus on what you do best i.e. understand the client’s needs, pool in candidates, perform pre-screening to generate qualified leads etc. and allow specialists to take care… Continue

Are You Good News?

When people are out looking for work they can sometimes get down on themselves and recruiters can forget about the impact they can have on the people they come into contact with. Being a positive influence on others can help you to be the kind of person that others want to be around. Give yourself every opportunity to turn the relationships you have and your network into your next testimonial, client, candidate, or career move. An enthusiastic person typically has some good news, a warm… Continue

Recruiter. Headhunter. Staffing Consultant. Placement Specialist. Talent Acquisition and Retention Specialist. BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH! Let’s call it what it really is – we are your Agent. OH YES – think Jerry Maguire “Show ME THE MONEY” Cuba Gooding yelling in the bathroom kind of agent. And no – I will not scream into the phone for you. I love you – but that just seems weird and it’s been done… Continue

Motivating Yourself When Your Job Sucks!

This is a bad time if you are someone who’s Monday’s are without question the worst day of the week, and every Sunday night you feel sick. If you are someone who hates their current job or perhaps the company you work for, then this economy only makes it worse. What do you do when the job market is slow and leaving is not an option? Let’s face it, just a few years ago, if you weren’t excited about your job, you went out and got a new one. For some it was as often as changing their underwear.… Continue

With cutbacks from the economy, more recruiters than ever are running a full desk. You may have been thrust suddenly into the role of Account Manager or Business Development in addition to your normal recruiting duties. What do your job board customers want?

When was the last time you asked your job board customers what they want? Not just a one-off question to a few clients – but an systematic, organized survey of everyone who uses your site? Employers and job seekers?

A recurrent theme in the ‘job boards are dying’ blog posts that I see is a feeling by recruiters, employers, and job seekers that the ‘big boards’ are out of touch. In other words, they don’t know what their customers want. Now, I’m guessing that they would argue with… Continue

Web design fees?

I am in the process of developing a company website for my technology recruiting firm and am curious about costs. Can anyone give me an idea of the standard fee range to set up a fairly simple 4 - 5 page corporate website? Thanks.

5 New Ways to Interview College Grads; Go Beyond the Interrogation and Towards a Proactive Approach

Have you ever seen the Fox hit television show, 24? It is gripping, action-packed and beyond unrealistic, yet I am hooked every season. 24’s hero and main man, Jack Bauer, is infamous for his 9 lives and vicious interrogation tactics that pry anything he wants out of his unsuspecting victims. Looking back on a few interviews I have been on…maybe Jack Bauer was the one who was sitting on the other side of the table, not the Hiring Manager.

There’s nothing worse than getting grilled by… Continue
