The Indian summer seems to have officially gone and it's now time to dust off the winter coats and step into the cold wind, hoping that London can avoid coming to a standstill this winter. With any luck, you might even sink your hand into the pocket of your long forgotten favourite winter coat to find a tenner you didn't realise was in there. I would love to say that's what happened to me, alas, it did not. A year old packet of chewing gum isn't nearly as…

The announcement on the 19th October 2011 that 950 jobs are to go at Aviva along with the distinct possibility that another 300 jobs will be outsourced in the near future, is the culmination of rumours that have been circulating for the past few months. It obviously made the 6 o’clock evening news with an outside broadcast interview with an employee and a union man from outside company headquarters in central Dublin.…

and you know something - after being retired for 2 years now I seem like I forgot how I ever opened my first company ....I almost don't think I would know how to do it again....I miss it - I miss the people, the excitement - of course the revenue - but I know the staffing business is still slow but here in Texas you hear the Governor saying how great business is and jobs are being filled - well I don't really think so - but I would sure accept some ideas from anyone that would tell me how to…

I was recently asked why I went into recruiting. Did I loss my job, was I unemployed for awhile... The truth is not that easy and perhaps sounds a bit strange to others...
I got into recruiting by having a recruiter try to recruit me from my loan officer position with a major regional bank back in 1989; apparently another loan department at another bank was interested in talking with me. I had never heard of recruiters or headhunters and was confused and puzzled by the…

In 216 BC Hannibal crossed the Alps in terrible conditions to attack Italy. His generals pleaded with him not to attempt it saying it would be impossible to cross the Alps with elephants. On hearing this Hannibal said “Aut viam inveniam aut faciam” or translated from Latin, I will either find a way, or make one. History tells us…

Losing your followers or losing your way--which is worse for a leader?
Can you be a leader without followers or without a purpose? Which is more critical?
My view is a leader is a leader with or without followers. Leaders find a mission—a purpose and pursue it. Followers, by their nature, need motivation, direction and a person & mission/vision bigger than themselves to…

With the IMF again in town as happens every quarter these day, you are prompted to reflect on how things are going in this great little country of ours. It was heartening to see Manuel Barosso congratulating the Irish on our great strides towards fiscal equalization - with another €4bn+ cutbacks in the Christmas budget, we should be on track for the IMF target of the current deficit running at 8.7% on Gross Domestic Product. (GDP). What this translates to in ordinary man's language is a…

Typically, an individual seeking a job prepares, as is recommended, in the following ways: developing a valuable skill set; networking with professionals in his or her field of interest; writing a succinct, yet captivating resume; researching the organization for an interview, if such an offer is extended. However, many applicants neglect to consider a fifth, equally significant…

I have been visiting RBC on a regular basis for about 8 months now. Today, I had the occasion to use a service that I was introduced to via the network here. And then I realized there were quite a few things that the community here has brought to me, and how thankful I am that there have been so many willing to share.
Blogs, posts, and comments: A bunch of "regular" participants on here have brought knowledge, encouragement, and LAUGHTER! Sandra, Amy,…

Early in the year, we reported that the hiring demand for Marketing Managers was growing. However, since the 4-year high in May 2011, hiring demand for Marketers has been slowly slipping. In September, Recruiters placed a total of 17,000 online job ads for Marketing Manager positions, a 26% decline compared to May, erasing any job gains seen for this occupation in the first part of the year. However, many organizations are planning for increased marketing budgets in 2012 – will hiring demand…

Words to the wise from a recruitment veteran of forty years- besides being dedicated to the recruiter's life (whatever that may mean to you) along with taking care of personal responsibilities with family, etc.--make an effort to have sideline activities such that they take you away from the rigors of recruiting (because traversing the terrain can become rigorous, even difficult).
I say this for two reasons—particularly for…
