Back From NYC

I have spent the last few days in NYC, and I have to say I was impressed. I felt safe and enjoyed the sites. Someone on the subway even did a good deed. Someone with me dropped her purse on the subway and did not see a credit card had fallen out under a chair. He picked it up and handed it back to her.

Also, there are some extemely talented people still available to recruit in this town!

I may have some news in the coming months, I went to Silver Cup Studio productions as well…

Rules for the unemployed job search

Yes, being unemployed creates a different set of rules in which you should manage your job search, and lets be clear it is the candidate who needs to take ownership and run the show. Steps include:

  • Assess and understand your skills in the market place and your flexibility (see blog: decision making 101)
  • Create your first draft of your resume
  • Call a…

linkedin candidates directed to your ATS

I've just seen that LinkedIn upgraded their job posting page and added a feature so that you can now have applicants apply online through your ATS. This is great for managing the candidate flow and most likely ensures that you at least respond to each and every candidate which once in a while may be hard if you get a lot of applicants through email. As well it gives you (or at least us here) an automated tracking of the source so we can see the effectiveness of posting jobs on LinkedIn (not too… Continue

My client refuses to pay me !!

I sent a resume with my candidates permission to a client that I have worked with for the past couple of years. I sent the resume on a (maybe there is a fit) without an actual job order from my client.. My client has given me permission to do this. My contact in HR replied " thanks for thinking of us. I am always willing to see good candidates. Nothing available now."

Anyway, I received an email a couple of day's later from the candidate asking me who I sent the resume to at the…

Professional Pet Peeve #1

Declining an Outlook meeting invite without looking at the date. Sorry, I can't make this meeting tomorrow because blah blah blah reason...even though the meeting invite states the meeting isn't until October. READ THE DAMN DATE PEOPLE! If people would slow down for 5 minutes and read instead of being Mr./Ms. Johnny/Janie On-The-Spot, Fastest Mouse-Clicker West of the Mississippi, Ms. Cleo of Outlook Invitations, I wouldn't have to write this. But no, it must be a race to see who can respond…

That's a big word Dave!

Folksonomy. AKA collaborative tagging, social classification, social indexing, or social tagging. What a great way to introduce this abstract concept! Dave Copps had just a wonderful talk at SourceCon about real nature of information on the web and how it relates social networking. Web 3.0. This is very much along the line of "Everything is Miscellaneous" by David Weinberger ISBN 0-8050-8043-0.

I also noticed that Dave uses a Mac.…

Win $250 For Charity

We're always looking for ways to demonstrate the positive power of social media. And this time we found it on BlogCatalog.com. BlogCatalog members have designated Sept. 27 as Blog Against Abuse.

While the topic is wide open, we were really taken by the idea. Enough so that I e-mailed the Antony Berkman, president of BlogCatalog, to see if we could go beyond our usual support of his social… Continue

Youth not always an advantage

Most of us who have been around understand (and sometimes long for) the advantages of youth (especially as our society is obsessed with youth), but when it comes to career changes sometimes a little experience goes a long way.

Obviously my job as a recruiter is to educate and inform a candidate about the interview process and assist them in working through details about a job and anything impacted by a change in jobs. Of course working with candidates who have been…

Re-Recruiting your Current Employees

Is re-recruiting your current employee’s part of your employee retention strategy? If not, it should be, according to Michael Jalbert, president of Management Recruiters International.

“Employers should be applying the strategies and tools of external recruiting to their current employees.”

Loyalty is a good trait to have but it is unrealistic to think that your employees will be loyal in such a…

Resume Typos & English as a Second Language

When I was just getting started in the Recruiting business, a very

successful recruiter told me that one of his red flags was a

typographical or grammatical error in a resume. His point was that a

resume is the most important document a person uses to "sell" his/her

skills, and he/she should make darn sure that there are no errors.

My mentor told me that a lack of… Continue
