Why are my employees leaving?

This was an actual question that was posed to me by a hiring official who I’ve worked with at several companies, but in his most recent move he went to a company that I had never worked with to place candidates. Of course, there are a million reason why people quit jobs and move on down the road, but he hadn’t had these issues previously and unfortunately wasn’t sure why it was happening now.

He knew he had gone to work for a company that had (in business terms) been…

Blogging Blogging Blogging

Since I already have a recruiting/sourcing blog over on Live.com... I'm just going to refer topics back from here... Or make it a more personal ranting/raving spot perhaps. Either way, this is my first entry here.

The New And Improved Cheez Factory

When I started blogging in 2003, there was not a whole hell of a lot of choices out there when it came to reading Recruiting Related Blogs. That changed real quick and it did not take long. One of the guys who started and really has not stopped is Joel Cheesman who has a blog called Cheezhead

Yesterday Joel launched a redesign of his site and added…

On social networks and the "reverse domino effect"...

Quote for the Day: Monday August 27th, 2007

"User generated content sites, like Digg, are often rigged; Facebook is no longer the exclusive community for students; MySpace has become a pedophiles source for soft porn; Orkut is every spammer's favorite toy, etc. The future of the big players does not look too promising. What happens when the tide begins to turn the other way and a few of my friends begin leaving? There is a very good chance that I will too. In…

On what recruiters do with leads, passive candidates...

Quote for the Day: Friday, August 24th, 2007

"If you’re interested in gainfully employed, successful individuals, then you’re going to have

to pick up the phone and call companies, because that’s typically where

you’ll find that type of person - at work. They probably haven’t

spammed their resume out to hundred of recruiters so you might actually

have to talk to them and ask them for one. As far as what I’ve…

Social Media Measurement

Social media participants and bloggers keep talking about traffic, rank, sponsors, connections, and influence as being the end all measures of success. And then I read that Southwest Airlines attributes $150 million in ticket sales generated by a widget, which is part of their social media program.

Maybe it's just me, but it reads as the period at the end of the sometimes long and… Continue

What do you think about prospective candidates who demand clients's name?

Has any of you come across propective candidates who demand to know your clients name? How do you deal with such people especially if they are qualified for a position? I was thinking of writing something where they would sign and promise not to apply directly to the client. Uuuugh!!!

Thanks

Will

On transforming HR...

Quote for the Day: Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

"Many attempts at HR effectiveness start without defining value. For example, some companies invest in e-HR services such as portals and online employee services and believe that they have transformed HR, but they have not. While e-HR may be a part of an overall transformation, it is merely a way to deliver HR administrative services. HR transformation must change the way to think about HR's role in delivering value…

EGrabber - Resume finder..

This week Jim Stroud has a guest columnist that discusses EGrabber and their resume finder software. I was interested in hearing if anyone has used this software and if it has helped in internet research and finding candidates? I looks promising to me, but many have before and disappointed.

On [not] having a shared vision...

Quote for the Day: Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

"Few professionals would argue with the need for a shared vision. It's pretty much accepted as good management practice nowadays - the way we

try to get people more engaged. But I'd argue that shared visions are

not all they're cracked up to be. If you think about it, the more

diverse a team of people are, the less chance there is of arriving at a

common vision. Diversity and a…

On Murphy's Law and other systematic complications....

Quote for the Day: Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

"The religious person may blame it on. original sin. The historian may cite the force of trends such as population growth and industrialization. The sociologist offers reasons rooted in the peculiarities of human associations. Reformers blame it all on "the system", and propose new systems that would, they assert, guarantee a brave new world of justice, peace, and abundance. Everyone, it seems, has his own idea of what…

Employability - Is Lisa more Employable then Lakisha?

Two prospective employee resumes come across a hiring manager’s desk. Both candidates have the same skills and qualifications as well as have degrees from prestigious colleges. One candidate however, may have an unfair advantage, a traditionally non-ethnic sounding name.

According to an article by David Wessel of the Wall Street Journal, "A white sounding name on an…

Company Blogs For Recruiting

Just yesterday, I was having lunch with an acquaintance of mine discussing various recruitment strategies by incorporating the voice of the customer or voice of the employee in this case. No doubt company blogs came up. Why? Because they build relationships and engage ongoing, multi-faceted conversations. And while some companies are leery of

allowing their employees to speak freely about their work…

How would you pay a retained firm for a candidate you referred to them?

A retained firm is working a position for your company. Your company gives that firm a name to connect with regarding that position. Do you pay the same fees on that candidate?
How do you construct your agreements with retained firms to account for referrals from your company that get placed at your company? What are best practices for this?…

On compensation double standards...

Quote for the Day: Monday, August 20th, 2007
