I’ve built various items with wood for many years. Some resemble furniture, others…well, they were interesting to create. Yet, apart from the sheer fun of cutting, chopping, paring, and (occasionally) pounding wood, I’ve also managed to extract a few lessons that have crossed over to my life in job boards:
1.
Never cut first, measure second. Translating to the job board world, that means you should take some time – a goodly amount of it – thinking about what your next big move…

Do you remember that guy who got a funding of $3million in his the series A round, he had an impressive business plan, he displayed rapid growth and claimed he was 12 months from breaking even? Do you remember how he delivered his commitments during the first 6 months, which was followed by a series of losses? This situation is all too common, we have all seen this, but now instead of ignoring this situation, lets shed light on how this could happen, and what signs can we watch out…

Where has the respect for the candidates gone?
I was trained in recruitment some years ago by the true old timers. The owner of the agency I cut my teeth in had owned this permanent recruiting agency for 30 years at that point. Same office, a handful of the original guys, ashtrays on the desks next to the phone and of course a phone book. No computers, applications or technology. Believe it or not you got smacked in the back of the head and…

Time management - oh the words sound so simple but are yet so darn tricky. How else are there several books, infomercials, classes, and seminars dedicated to this very topic? How often do we feel like the
White Rabbit in Alice in Wonderland singing badly along to "I'm late for a very important date..." while frantically staring at our pocket watch? We learn and adjust to suit the obstacles we face. But every so often I…

I wanted to show you something that I think is really a great little tool that
Hireability has built and co-branded with RecruitingBlogs.com.
It is a resume parser that sits on top of Microsoft outlook and essentially, you take a folder of resumes and click a button and the system extracts all the information from that resume and creates a contact in your email for that candidate, including the resume which is searchable. It's…

I found
here a funny analogy with performance feedback:
"Question: What’s the difference between performance feedback and a root canal?
Answer: Anesthesia"
During performance reviews, I’ve noticed two dominant reactions when receiving negative feedback:
*
Constructive – The receiver listens to the sender’s arguments (if the case, also bringing…

Waiting, wanting and willing to put up with all of the uncertainty and fear of not knowing what is coming around the corner is enough to make anyone wish they were not living in the now. We have a way of throwing ourselves off balance, waiting for the right moment to make a career move whether we know where we are going or not. Well, it’s okay to be afraid. When in doubt, it’s time to move on…

At Stanford University, we developed a concept called OccupationDNA. I am sure that several others may have already experimented with this concept, so we decided to take it to new level.
Just as any living thing has a DNA, similarly every occupation has a DNA too - its what the occupation requires for it to be fulfilled. We collaborated with data provided by US Dept. of Labor and developed the OccupationDNA (made up of a collection of 275 traits that we identified) for over 4500…

With so many talented professionals seeking work in today’s job market, it is interesting to see a number of bright and capable individuals having trouble overcoming themselves during these tough times. For those who have been successful time and again in stronger markets, the loss of career footing is truly disconcerting. The previously successful professional who never experienced pause or setback is now faced with a task that is proving to be very challenging on many different…

To my fellow 3rd party recruiters & sourcers,
Over 30+ years of working in this wonderful industry of recruiting has taught me a lot. Knowledge gained through experience, mistakes, successes and a lot of shared knowledge from peers, collegues and associates. It would be fair to have described me as a "lurker" and not a participator in the public exchange.
I am extremely grateful to all of you that have so generously shared your ideas, thoughts, tips and tricks over the…

“What do you mean there is only one person on the shortlist?” Bob exclaimed as I discussed with him the recruitment process for the Environmental Engineer. Despite the tight labor market and war for talent, managers still expect and demand to see between three and five applicants on the shortlist.
One of the flaws in recruitment is that most managers tend to recruit on the basis of finding the best person for the role. Taking this flawed approach to the next level, they will…

One thing that many years in the recruitment industry has taught me, is that actually in the big scheme of things we know comparatively little. Yes of course we know our industry, our marketplace and even our industry sector very well, but anyone who professes to know much more than that is, quite frankly, stretching the truth a little!
There is more to know about the recruitment industry are than any of us involved in it can ever hope to learn – social recruiting has shown us how…
