Building My Case...

I've always wanted to make a career of writing. Recruiting is something I got into after college because nobody wants an English Lit major to write for them unless they've already written something that's been published but nobody seems to want to publish your stuff unless you've been published (the ole Catch 22.) My first real job after college (after a brief bought of delivering pizzas--long story) was as a project manager for a sign and lighting maintenance company. Consequently, I know more… Continue

Are you listening?

Interviewing can be stressful for everyone. But one of the most important things to do when you are in an Interview is LISTEN. In feedback that I have been receiving from clients today is that candidates right now are not listening to the questions that are being asked. They are just diving into why they are the right fit for the job.

Make sure you listen to the questions that are being asked and answer the question is a direct way back. Too wordy of an answer or giving too many examples… Continue

I'm Abe Froman!!

I know what a friggin’ Recruiting Pipeline is. It’s simple! You bundle up some resumes and email them on a regular basis to a hiring manager. Done! Pipeline! Bam!

However, this fresh-out-of-school, Jonas Brothers listening, scruffy Nerf herder Recruiter was telling ME that I didn’t know what a Recruiting Pipeline was. He said I had it all wrong. Me?! Wrong!?! Wha..wha…I’m Abe Froman, the Sausage King of Recruiting!!!

I took a deep breath. I had to calm… Continue

You Make Great Mistakes

When you make a mistake, big or small, cherish it like it’s the most precious thing in the world. Because in some ways, it is.

Most of us feel bad when we make mistakes, beat ourselves up about it, feel like failures, get mad at ourselves.

And that’s only natural: most of us have been taught from a young age that mistakes are bad, that we should try to avoid mistakes. We’ve been scolded when we make mistakes — at home, school and work. Maybe not always, but probably enough… Continue

Shark Attacks down, economy seems to be the cause

http://tinyurl.com/sharkattacks

Shark attacks are down. Seriously they are. Why? Less people are going on vacations where they can get eaten by the big fishes.

I try to see the silver lining in things when possible, I guess this counts! Anybody else have anything to report on the economy that is positive? Please throw it in here.

I also heard condom sales are up significantly, but that is a story for a different day (or format)......

Taking the Mystery out of the process – companies trying to catch up

As a 3rd party recruiter I’ve talked with my client companies and candidates about how one of my major roles is to take the fear and mystery out of the interviewing process and to fill that void with information and certainty. Well it now looks like some companies may finally be getting around to understanding the benefit.

In doing some recent marketing research I found one company that actually spelled out their process for candidates on their website, and even explained both the… Continue

Resume Writing: What do I do?

‘What do I do’ is an interesting question you should be asking yourself when you are writing a resume. Let us begin with the following idea:

If you do not know, how is a recruiter going to know?

You may find it amusing that I mention this; however it is not uncommon for me (and many others within the industry) to read the resume of a candidate and come out if it wondering what this person actually does. This person is one who has many skills and tries to convey… Continue

Why source candidates if I can't use them right now?

When business is booming and time is at more of a premium than gas was a few short months ago it sometimes becomes hard to justify spending the time to source excess candidates and fill your talent pool to the brim. Unfortunately for most, that time is not now.

So, what to do with your free time? Why not source a few A+ candidates?

Sure this takes work, and the time could be spent chasing down leads on jobs to fill. However, if you dedicate a little bit of time each day to… Continue

Contract VS Permanent: Can I make the switch?

Many people switch career paths between contract and permanent opportunities and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Everyone has different motivations for this move from opportunity to work environment to the lifestyle associated with contracting. I would like to discuss candidates who have been a long time contractor who are interested in permanent opportunities.

This is a trend I have seen more commonly as of late. Most candidates are alluding to the recent economic… Continue

Who’s running to join the IT sector…

In light of all the lay offs going on within the Information Technology industry as of late, I thought we should briefly discuss the effects that this industry shift will have on the future of the Information Technology labour market. Where I am really trying to take this post is in the following direction – if the Information Technology sector keeps crashing, who’s going to want to join it in the future?

Getting students to join the IT field in school has always been a hot… Continue

Stiffing New York City

Our Governor Patterson is obviously blind to the strategic needs of New York state. While those influential to him live in upstate New York, the bulk of the revenue generation takes place downstate. So when I just read that the initial stimulus plan dollars will be going upstate, I had to scratch my bald head.

How will funding upstate New York bridge replacement, highway resurfacing and… Continue

Meaningful Pre-Screening ~ More Crucial Today Than Ever

Layoffs today are cutting into the "wood" of the real talent pool at many companies, making top line people available for the first time in years. Some are now likely applying to your openings. As you deal with an increasing flow of applicants, there's a lot on the line in terms of your employer branding. Prospective employees, especially those of the caliber you now or will want to hire, will be doubly impressed if they're well treated in this economic climate when they apply for a… Continue

Is cutting working hours the way to save jobs?

A recent poll conducted by www.recruiter.co.uk suggested that when employers were faced with a choice on the future of their job most employees would rather cut their hours than loose their job all together. The online web poll also suggested that 6% would rather take a pay cut and 7% will accept a sabbatical.

The BBC have today reported that Jaguar Land Rover are to vote on a four day week and a pay freeze for one year in the aim of stopping compulsory job losses for the… Continue

6 of 1, Half Dozen of the Other?

New to the blogosphere I felt compelled to take one step back from my initial post and fill readers in on the basic fundamentals of my business (providing payroll funding w/ back office support) and factoring. In short, I am a former recruiter now in the business of providing financial and business processing support to staffing companies across the country. Lately when speaking to prospects in the initial stages of dialogue the person I’m speaking to will often confuse my services with that of… Continue

The Perfect Employee?

First and foremost I'd like to say not everyone can be the perfect employee, nor should we expect every employee to seek the bar let alone try and jump over it. Many employees are focused on life outside the office even though their life inside it offers the livelihood they enjoy outside. Did that make sense?
