With Thanksgiving here, I decided to get festive in my interview analogies by introducing the Turducken as a model for job seekers to consider the next time they sit down for an interview. For those you who have never heard of the Turducken, it is a partially deboned Turkey that is stuffed with a deboned duck that itself has been stuffed with deboned chicken. But that's not it. There's more stuff inside. The minds… Continue

Mike VanDerVort posted 77 posts to the HR Carnival site. Not only am I touched that my colleagues took the time to participate, I am grateful that so many HR professionals work to put compassion to action.
Gratitude:
Gratitude is an action word. Being thankful is a state of mind. Being grateful comes with the responsibility of giving back. Even if we take baby steps in doing so, each random… Continue

I received an email from someone trying to figure out how to minimize any negative impressions his resume may make to potential employers because he had worked a number of contract and consulting projects. When he lists his entire job history, it looks like he’s been hopping jobs way too often when in fact it’s the nature of the project work he’s done. Some of his assignments were a matter of days and others for several months, but it makes a… Continue

The balance in our own lives between taking care of ourselves and our families v. helping less fortunate strangers is really personal, dynamic, and sometimes quite random.
If you are a devotee of Ayn Rand and all that, I imagine your charitable giving is minimal, at best.
If like most folks you tend to give when a moment strikes, I am talking to you.
We all understand that we can give 100% of our incomes and energy and human suffering would only reduce by a… Continue

Being laid off is a blow to the ego, no doubt. The good news for today’s victims is that they’re in good company. Economic declines are always accompanied by job loss, but in this unprecedented downturn, it’s rare to find someone unscathed. Still, like losing a loved one or going through a divorce, job loss brings with it a grieving process. It’s important to recognize everyone must move through the stages of grief and that they’re not linear; that is, you’ll move between the various stages… Continue

"As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them."
- John F. Kennedy
The day has begun and who among us is not a little distracted at the thoughts of spending time with friends and family and football? I know I am. As I look back over the previous year, I realize there are a few things I should be thankful for.
I am thankful for the troops that keep us safe by fighting our battles in far off… Continue
An HR blogger said something interesting in a recent job boards-are-dying type post: "We will be job board free in 2 years." In a follow-up post to explain how this would occur, this anonymous blogger says (problem areas in red):
"When you need something, you go to Google, so why not use it to find a job? Simply enter your criteria, say sales…
A few days back I saw the first ever job posting on Indeed advertising for a "Talent Community Manager". (Kudos to Deluxe for taking a huge step forward in recruiting and leveraging this opportunity). Using social media for recruitment takes time, technology and people and they "get that"
Considering Facebook alone as over 300 million users, ½ of which log in to their account in a given day it would not be surprised to see other organizations follow their lead and take advantage of… Continue

The Center for Marketing Research at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth just released an in-depth study of how the fastest growing private companies use Social Media to market their businesses.
Here is a summary of interesting findings from the study:
Over 90% of Inc. 500 companies use social networks for marketing and branding.
75% of all responding Inc. 500 companies classified themselves as “very familiar” with Social Networking. And an incredible 91% of… Continue
In the 70’s it was quite common to see men with thick bushy chest hair and a sporty moustache. Today, we are clean, shaven, groomed, waxed, and polished to a shiny gleam.
Hiring managers in Corporate America discriminate against men with moustaches and beards. Now I know a lot of you have some facial hair and you’re gonna get pissed after reading this. And Rightfully so. You worked hard to get that Justin Timberlake thin razor cut (aka The Rap Industry… Continue

I am thankful that it seems like the worst of the recession is behind us. Organizations have started recruiting people and that is such a welcome sign.
The problem with working as an expatriate in the Middle East that your life and future in the country depends on your job. If one loses their job and cannot find another one, they have to dismantle their life here and leave.
Recession was hitting us this time last year in UAE. Retrenchments had started and I remember that… Continue

I just talked to an HR Manager who told me that they had a no-headhunting policy, so I wasn’t allowed to talk to their people … what a terrific idea! Or maybe not.
I know of companies who train receptionists to block recruiters’ calls, and ensure that Monster and Workopolis are banned from company internet. Heck, while they’re at it, why not block LinkedIn, Twitter and halt conference attendance and rendezvous’ with former colleagues and miscellaneous strangers in coffee… Continue
Last week was the UK’s first recruitment unconference and it was certainly an interesting event. I was working the Social Media Track with @mattalder and @carveconsulting. Anyone who knows Matt and Paul will know how knowledgeable both are when it comes to social media; I cannot tell you how much I learned from them throughout the day!
Internal Recruiters are the Mr (or Ms or Miss or Mrs) Cellophane's of the corporate world, the poor cousin of the HR team. Like the old adage internal recruiters should be seen and not heard. (I disagree by the way, I've just seen this ideal a bit)
Your part of the company, but not really. You don't build or sell the widgets, you don't set policy, you don't deliver the business solutions to clients. You don't actually make money for the company, you… Continue
I beleive gratitude is expressed through a positive outward action. In order for others to know we are grateful for them being in our life, or for them doing something that enriches our lives, we must open the hole in our face and tell them!!!!.........Hugs work 2 !!

TONIGHT- Tuesday Nov 24th 7pm (Also Live meeting with Mike Karczewski at Lombard office Illinois)
Its been a challenging year for me and through it all, I can truly say I'm thankful.
I have terrific friends and family members who give me encouragement and support. My brother in Conn. is paying to fly me out to his home for Christmas. My friends have listened to my personal and business "woes."
And just yesterday, I received word that one client plans to make an offer this week to one of my candidates (who is prepared to accept the offer), and another client will likely… Continue

This was originally posted on the site I do my blogging regularly - called Adoptivefamiles.com and when I saw that people were doing it here, it made me want to participate as well. This one is not geared as much towards adoption or infertility so I thought it was worthwhile to share with this community - hope you enjoy!
