So...If I gave you a way to speak with any hiring authority or Senior HR exec., would you care?

I'm not a recruiter right now. I once was. I may be again someday.

I remember that it was tough to get past gatekeepers and get the attention of hiring managers. I was good at it. But, it still S*%^ED.

So, I offered a recruiter a way to connect with virtually any senior HR executive or hiring manager using a very positive, non-threatening approach that virtually assured a face-to-face meeting. Interestingly, he declined. He didn't argue that the approach wouldn't work. He… Continue

Is "SORRY" really the hardest word?

I love my football, I love my Carlton Football Club, and my mood on the days they play, effectively mirrors the way the team plays. I understand it is a game, but it is a release, an escape if you will. It is a great leveler, CEO's and Parliamentarians and truck drivers and people without a job, pensioners and students are all the same. It doesn't matter who you are, if you are personally invested (not so much financially) in some way. The ramifications of those 22 players (AFL team) has on… Continue

How long can you last?

In one position I would jingle my car keys at about 7:00 p.m. letting my manager know I was finally leaving after working for twelve hours. At another company I would see people sitting at their desk playing on the internet to look like they were working - staying as long as they could for political reasons. I heard employees arguing about how early they came in and that they stayed later than everyone else, but yet they still had nothing to do. Why is it in some corporate cultures sitting in… Continue

Rip-off report

Does anyone have any good companies that can remove rip off report from Google searches? My company had petty person, write negative information about us. (We just made INC 500). It is the second to come up on Google searches, and it leads a bad reputation for a great company.

Please let me know!

Thank you

Video Resumes

The vote is still out on the advantages of having and sending video resumes. I have read many articles on this subject and the decision is pretty much split right down the middle as to whether they offer a real benefit as opposed to a traditional resume. I have diligently completed a Visual CV as well as profiles on LinkedIn, Facebook, Recruitingblogs.com and Twitter. I am socially networked and totally Googleable… do I really need another web presence to drive people to find/contact/reach… Continue

The Client Side - I........uh.............I make cold calls. There I said it.

In a conversation over the last week on RBC the subject of cold calling came up. One responder said that cold calling is unprofessional. Now to this person's defense, they were saying that they believe warm calls are more professional and that you should know something about who you are calling before you call. As I spent much of the past week cold calling, I chuckled some and thought a little about this conversation and perspective. My perspective is that this is an apples and oranges kind of… Continue

Phone Interview Tips

Employers use telephone interviews as a way of identifying and recruiting candidates for employment. Phone interviews are often used to screen candidates in order to narrow the pool of applicants who will be invited for in-person interviews. They are also used as a way to minimize the expenses involved in interviewing out-of-town candidates. If you are lucky you will have a predetermined time for a phone interview, but other calls might come… Continue

Forbes wants people to reinvent their careers

Eight people who were once big earners before seeing pink are profiled by Forbes as an indicator that anyone can reinvent themselves and become more fulfilled.

We see a Senior Vice President at Wellpoint who refused to relo from New Hampshire to Indiana - and the company acquiesced; a web development consultant who fiddles with code on his cell while the barber trims his locks;… Continue

Candidate Data Theft - On the Increase

At Pan Eight Consulting, we have worked with a number of clients who have experienced candidate or customer data theft in some shape or form.

The economic downturn is leading to an increase in data theft, with recruitment agencies the worst hit sector and most susceptible.

Increasing competition for a diminishing number of client job offers among agencies is causing a rise in data theft.

Based on a recent survey, among recruiters, three quarters of data… Continue

Campaigning for people to lose jobs. Shame media

I rarely get up on my soap box, but man.. this has really annoyed me.

I love my football, I love my sport, I love hearing about it, I love reading about it and basically I cannot get enough. However this month, there has been a couple of issues arising which really sticks in my craw.... (where is my craw by the way?)

Anyway, in the media here, there seems to be a pre-occupation with people losing their jobs, specifically coaches of football clubs. Aren't we in a recession?… Continue

Tough Time for Nurse Grads

It saddens me that there are many recent grads in healthcare and that few facilities are willing to give them an opportunity. While I do understand that it's a matter of investing time and money into someone who may take off within months, healthcare is sorely in need of nurses. Few nurses are interested in teaching because teaching does not pay as well as other areas of nursing, so though there may be men and women interested in becoming nurses getting into nursing school is not easy. Although… Continue

Let the Games Begin! A whole new Recruiting world awaits....

Let me explain something here to the guys. When you get married, Game Over.

I was playing a video game. It was 2 AM. I was using my Plantronics headset with mic shouting at my team of online gamers (mostly college kids) when all of a sudden my wife pulls the electrical plug.

We were on the last level to slay the Dragon monster and she drops the power strip in my lap. Friggin’ unplugged and offline, my team lost hours worth of… Continue

Should Employers Know What You Post On Your Personal Sites?

According to a study by Deloitte LLP, a majority of employers feel that they have a right to know what’s being posted on personal social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. A rant or negative opinion about a company can end up damaging reputations and divulging secrets valuable to competitors. But most of us can’t help but check up on our personal sites. The most common reasoning for staying active in personal social media goes something… Continue
