I Passed my Certification for the PIAV Assessment!!!

I have spent over a year working with and getting trained on several assessments produced by Target Training International. Recently, I have started studying for the certification exams for the DISC and the Personal Interest, Attitudes and Values (PIAV) assessments. Wednesday night I took the exam for the PIAV and found out the next day that I passed!

This exam was quite brutal even for someone who has a background in industrial-organizational psychology. When I first opened the link… Continue

Creating a Positive Candidate Recruiter User Experience

I have been thinking about many things and experiencing “Web 2.0 overload” in my attempts to secure a new position and get my own enterprise off the ground. While some of what I am going to discuss here is obvious, I feel compelled to write about it.

There was an excellent discussion on RecruitingBlogs.com started by Jennifer LaVigne entitled “Cold calling and your best pick up line.” There were insightful comments from every smart person that participated in the discussion. What… Continue

The Client Side - Pitchers and Catchers Report

Today is the day that Pitchers and Catchers report to spring training. One of the Great Days for baseball fans. This has been an exciting day for me for most of my life. I love baseball and even with all the problems the sport has had in recent years, it's still the greatest game to me. I love the strategy of the game and see some great parallels with our business.

For one thing, baseball is situational. There's no time clock so strategy is centered around situations, circumstances… Continue

Direct Placement Freak Out! Need your help.

I recently placed a candidate in a position within a large Defense Company. The candidate went for his interviews, did great and was offered the position. The candidate got an offer letter with a very nice relo package. All was well on both sides and the candidate is scheduled to start 2-23. The company came to his house and appraised his stuff for shipping; they even measured the length of his dog to size for a crate. The whole nine.. I just go a call and they told me that his status has been… Continue

So the wind was let out of my sails a bit. What now?

As much as I hate to admit it, the honeymoon period seems to be coming to a close for me. In no way does this mean I dislike my job, who I work for, or the people I work with. Rather, this week finally brought forth irrefutable evidence that the company I am working for is not, in fact, immune to the recession.

In all honesty I knew this was the case all along, but at least for a while it seemed as though the proactive stance that was taken to operate as frugally as possible was… Continue

itzalive!

From Cheezhead - Seems just like yesterday we were reporting the end of itzbig, the first of the eHarmonies to officially go bye-bye. Not so fast! Back from the dead, former itzbig CTO, and now its CEO, Asad Khan sent me a message today proclaiming the company’s rebirth.

Market Obfuscation

Hi All,

I dont know whats going on but i'm noticing decreased utility with the larger sites like Monster.com and Dice.com when compared to new comers like InterviewTomorrow.com I think we are seeing a change in utility with the larger sites and smallers (free) sites are working to provide value. What do you guys think?

Dos and Don'ts for careers sites

Just posted a new vidcast about the dos and don'ts for careers sites. Check it out here or read below:

I'm in the midst of consulting a client on how to make their careers site more effective, and every time I do some research to take a look at what companies are doing out there, I get rather depressed seeing how terrible careers sites are these days.

They are the single most important part of any company's site, as… Continue

Dr. Jekyll, Mr... Tech Support?

A vast majority of my blog has been dedicated to candidate advice. I figured amongst the cold blasts of snow, a lighthearted candidate story or two would be appropriate.

#1 – The Cold Shoulder

I was working on a Technical Support role for a company in Boston. I had a lengthy phone discussion with said candidate, for sanity’s sake we shall call him “Bob.” Bob seems interested in the role, I explain the need to meet with him prior, etc. Shortly thereafter, I receive a few emails… Continue

Client or Candidate - who is the real customer here?

Is the client or the candidate the more important customer? When working for a staffing firm I can recall having this argument many times. It usually started when the candidate wanted more out of the client thus making some negotiations necessary. It was a two-way street, though, and the salespeople made their argument loud and clear when the client made similar requests.

So who really is the customer? The client? The candidate? Both? If both, who takes precedence during tough… Continue
