Do You Really Want to Hire a “Rock Star?”
I recently had the opportunity to sit at a roundtable discussion with some peers that provide staffing solutions for the Information Technology industry. We were talking about the challenges our…
At Wowzer, since we love video, we love Vine. Vine does for video what Twitter did for blogging: helps people share glimpses of their lives in a minimalist format so that it's fast to create and fast to watch. But is Vine good for presenting yourself to prospective employers?
Vine videos are limited to 6 seconds; they're short, interesting and usually pretty fun to watch, in part because lots of clever users have…

Each month, the New York City metro area consistently outnumbers all other metros in hiring demand. In March, there were more than 437,000 ads available online in the greater New York area. (Los Angeles was in 2nd place with about 258,000 ads.) This ad volume represents a 1% decline in demand compared to March of 2012. Approximately 89% of available job ads during March were posted by employers, whereas staffing firms and recruiting agencies only accounted for about 11% of ads.…

Ten months ago I attended a potential client meeting. The senior vice-president of human resources, whom I had just met, wished me a happy belated birthday and told me my blog on goal-oriented rewards was very interesting. A simple Google search of my name had led her to my Facebook page and my blog, giving her insight to both my personal and professional lives.…

Yeah we said it. HR, Recruiting, Hiring. The people in charge of people are the most important part of any organization. Not only do they bring in the people that make the company who it is and what it is, they also create the culture with which future…

Cross-posted from The Green Suits:
Paul Courtemanche has enjoyed a storied career in direct/interactive marketing and product management. In 2012, he became a "corporate escapee" when he co-founded Cincinnati-based KDL Alliance, a business accelerator that helps entrepreneurs scale their businesses. We recently caught up with Paul to discuss his new endeavor:…

When organizations talk about implementing social media into their recruitment marketing strategies, most often times they are not really sure to start. In many cases, they begin to talk to their existing recruitment technology providers to see how to start. The thing with this is that in many cases recruitment technology does not provide any more value to the free social media tools that marketing…

Are you using social media in your job search? Are you using social media to find potential hires? Whether you’re looking for a job or looking for a new hire, you should be using social media as part of your process. While Pew Research estimates that 65% of adults use social media for their own job search, only some are as successful as they could be. Job seeking through…

When Gerry Crispin was a boy hiring was so easy. There was lots of talent just lying all over the place.
All you had to do was put an ad in the paper and hire a secretary to open the resumes.
But, now, things are different.
You…

In November 2012, I wrote a post called Whiskey, Wine and Root Beer http://wthomsonjr.com/november-2012/whiskey-wine-and-root-beer/ . It was a fan favorite, and still to this day one of my favorite posts. This weekend my family and I made the drive down to Carrizo Springs, TX again. …

Many a job has been lost due to revelations found in social media profiles that shared just a bit too much for the employer’s taste. According to a recent survey conducted by Jobvite, “nearly 3 out of 4 hiring managers and recruiters check candidates’ social profiles – 48% always do so, even if they are not provided.”
It’s clear that the internet is a very useful tool for…

A disgruntled former employee wouldn’t normally be considered news worthy and wouldn’t get any coverage in traditional news outlets but social media gives him a forum to voice his opinion, potentially attracting similarly disgruntled employees. Together, they form a community with the sole purpose of bringing down the organization, whether by warning prospective employees against joining the organization on employer-review forums like Glassdoor or forming …

According to recent statistics, the number of bachelor's degrees earned by computer science majors from Ph.D. awarding U.S. universities has increased by nearly 20% in 2012 compared to 2011. This marked the third year in a row that we’ve seen the double-digit increase.
Who cares? We should all care and be infinitely happy that younger generations are realizing that not only is a degree relating to science and technology a lucrative career move, but it can almost be seen as a leap…

Our televisions were filled with scenes normally reserved for Hollywood and make-believe: gun wielding SWAT teams, military Humvees bristling with weaponry, shots fired, suspects killed and apprehended. A terrible tragedy that started with bombs ended with bittersweet triumph. A job well done. A commitment for justice met.
This is Radical…

I have long held the view that people need to be a little braver with their CV's and resumes. Far too many people write their CV/resume so it offends nobody. Trouble is, it attracts nobody either.
Just last week I had a candidate who sent me their CV.…

Many people have started to consider business cards a bit ‘old hat’ in this new era of social networking and direct online portfolios. However don’t be fooled, when used right business cards can help streamline your recruitment operations and help generate more positive leads.

The laws surrounding email SPAM are somewhat of a mystery to many recruiters, with many actually violating the law on a regular basis without even know it. And that's scary because EACH separate email sent in violation of the CAN-SPAM Act may be subject to penalties of up to $16,000. That’s right, per email sent.
"Yikes", you say. "That’s a crap load of money," you exclaim.
"Yup it…
