Not Every L.I.O.N. Knows How To Hunt...

LION Okay, recruiters... it's time we addressed it. It's time that we talked a little bit about what it means to use networking sites (specifically LinkedIn) to effectively ‘connect' and recruit. Hey - somebody's got to tell a handful of you that are stumbling and bumbling your way through it that you're giving others a bad wrap - and creating some hesitation by some to speak to anyone with the word "recruiter" in their… Continue

Wal-Mart's December Earnings

Ouch...

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT: 5.54-0.48-0.86%) said Thursday that December same-store sales rose 1.7% excluding fuel, falling short of the estimate for an increase of 2.8% in a survey of analysts by Thomson Reuters. In the year-ago period, Wal-Mart said same-store sales rose 2.4%. "Due to the difficult economy and severe winter weather in some regions, the holiday season was more challenging for retailers than expected," said Eduardo Castro-Wright, vice… Continue

Claudia's Wednesday Wisdom: Catch-22

Oh, dearie, dearie me...

"I saw my boss and one of my workmates out on a date, although they didn’t see me. How do I know it wasn’t a business meeting? Let’s just say that things were a little steamy at the dinner table, and I’m not talking about the vegetables."

Are you adapting your services to stay relevant?

An old saying by Heraclitus a Greek philosopher that “Nothing endures but change”. If this was true in 500 BC, then today if you are not preparing for change you are dead in the water. Period!

Today I was reading a Gartner research report by Thomas Otter, aka Vendorprisey, The Effects of Social Software on Your Employer Brand (Hat Tip:… Continue

Job Board trends Down Under

The past often reveals what the future holds. I looked back at some of the major job board related trends in the Australian marketplace.

1.Vibrant but volatile industry

In 2008, some 150-170 job boards exist in Australia. The number increases five folds if the definition of a job board is expanded to include online destinations that list employment opportunities. With off-the shelve software and free job board technology easily available, starting a job board has never… Continue

What Makes Me an Average Recruiter

1. Saying the very same thing the last recruiter said to the same potential clients and expecting to be the one who gets the order.

2. Having the same candidate my competitor has that we both grab off Monster each morning and expecting to be the one who gets the send-out.

3. Agreeing to discount my fees because the potential client has "multiple openings and I should be happy they are letting me in".

4. Arriving at the office after 8, milling around for 1/2 hr… Continue

In-house Recruiting Leadership in a challenging economy

There was a discussion I was involved in on Recruitingblogs.com the other day, which took many directions, from the effect the US economy has on the rest of the world, to Leadership situational leaders v top down leadership. I saw and was intrigued through the conversation and the different angles people were coming from.

It did get me thinking about about… Continue

What makes me a smart recruiter

It’s simple;
- Treat others with the same level of respect that you would want or expect to be given to you
- Be kind, be honest, be truthful
- Follow up and follow through

And lastly,
- Communicate

What makes me a Smart Recruiter

I have been a recruiter for a dozen years so far so I have survived burnout, a recession, and the booms. I am a smart recruiter because I know my limitations and never let them get in the way of succeeding. I don't think that recruiting is any harder than any other job, but it does require hard work, discipline and a little luck.

Big Bucks NO Whammies……

For those of you out there who were children of the 80’s (or perhaps a bit older), hopefully you will remember the show – Press Your Luck. Contestants would collect spins that led to prizes after the spin traveled around a makeshift digital game board, all the while yelling “BIG BUCKS NO WHAMMIES.” I promise this has a point.

The other day, I was talking with a friend who was flustered about their resume and cover letter in an attempt to find the perfect recipe for submitting… Continue

Resolutions Be Damned!

New Year So other than the parties I believe that the best part of new year - the part that people just LOVE - is setting resolutions. Oh, I know - you're probably already picking up on my sarcasm, right? Of course, maybe you don't even make a New Year's resolution because you know that you just won't lose that extra 10lbs or you'll never find the time to pick up that old hobby again. But hey, let's chat a bit about them anyhow.

First - my resolutions from last year and how we ended… Continue

As posted on the MN Headhunter blog:

In a world where business networks and relationships are often sustained in virtual reality, having an online presence is increasingly critical to career success. That's why a…

Zvents.com

Having the ability to source and uncover top talent is crucial to your success. Sometimes the tools we use come from non-traditional means.

I’ve recently come across an outstanding tool that is not at all meant for recruiters but you know what that means. As a breed, we are probably the more sticky and intrusive people around, but in the end we find people jobs and that’s what it’s all about.

Enter Zvents.com. Here is a little background. Based in San Mateo Ca.,… Continue

Catch-22

Dear Claudia,

I totally don’t know what to do about this. I saw my boss and one of my workmates out on a date, although they didn’t see me. How do I know it wasn’t a business meeting? Let’s just say that things were a little steamy at the dinner table, and I’m not talking about the vegetables. I was shocked, because I had no clue at the office; to make things worse my boss’ wife is my best friend. This isn’t really the time to go looking for a new recruiting job, and I’d hate to…
