Pride without Predjudice, well maybe a little.

This is the time of the year where you catch up with family and friends, share in the news and fun that this season brings. You get to see some certain family and friends who you probably won't see for another 12 months, but you are still connected, and somehow the time that passes under that well used bridge doesn't seem to matter. You are constantly surprised at how much… Continue

Jerry Macguire Changed my life

A sad statement I know. This movie turned up on late night television the other night and it reminded me of a situation I was in a bit over a year ago.

Now this isn't a Show me the money… Continue

What makes me a Smart Recruiter ... Am I a smart recruiter?

Let's see... what makes me a 'smart recruiter'?

Jason has asked for 5 reasons why I feel I am a smart recruiter ... well, I'm polite, consummately professional and courteous. Whenever I contact someone, I will always ask for a referral (even if I know the person I'm speaking with is 'right'). I always ask a potential candidate if this is 'a good time to talk'. I never lie to candidates or clients (no ruses). My telephone is my friend and every time someone says 'no', I know that I… Continue

This kind of recruiting is truly not for the recruiting professionals

I'm not opposed to offering some type of incentive to serve or secure a customer. But when I see these cheap Internet sites like Dyak coming along and wanting us to work for 8 % or less, not collecting fees for 90 days and without any type of commuication, I am appalled at what they are trying to drive this industry level down to.

For 23 years I have been a proud recruiter and although things are tough I would rather close my doors than work at bottom feeder levels.

I… Continue

A Typical Phone Sourcing Business Inquiry

Hello Maureen, I am the Business Development and Recruiting Manager for XYZ. Our current focus is recruiting for the Dept of Defense so the majority of our positions require candidates with active TS SCI Full Scope clearances who are interested in exploring new opportunities in the intelligence arena. Have you sourced in this area before? I could use some help and if you are interested, let's talk.

Interview Questions

This one is more for those who are doing the interviewing out there in the PR world...the shot callers. When meeting with potential team additions, keep in mind that candidates are screening you, just as you are screening them. So, make the interview questions relevant, conversational, and, if possible, inspiring enough to evoke meaningful responses so that you can begin the process of truly determining if the person sitting across from you could someday be on your side of the table with a… Continue

Creating Win - Win Relationships for 2009

In spite of our amazing technological advance, the work of an

organization is still accomplished by people. It is people who

interface with the customer, make the product, deliver the

service, plan and coordinate how work gets done, improve

processes and systems, ensure quality, and return a profit.

Technology has provided us with better tools, but it is still

people who do the work of an organization and are ultimately

responsible for its… Continue

How long should your resume be?

A friend of mine came by over the weekend to go over his job search plan. He had paid a good deal of money to a company that helped him rewrite his resume and then they blasted out hard and soft copies to thousands of companies.

Well, he hasn't gotten the results he had hoped for, so he was asking for advice. I was shocked to see that this company recommended that he limit his resume to one page! He has over 20 years of experience and I have always thought the one page rule was for… Continue

I'm writing a post on Phoenix, and if you're from there, write a blog there, or have something to say about the town, now's the time to let me know.

In what will be a regular feature, I'll be covering the landscape of different cities that recruit, working my way across the internet in search of new and exciting trends from a local recruiting level.

Being from...Neptune

My friend, Evelyn Rodriguez has a great post this morning on her blog, based on a quote that I love:

"Either you repeat the same conventional doctrines everybody is saying, or else you say something true, and it will sound like it's from Neptune."

- Noam Chomsky

I love this quote, because it is a good reminder that it is not… Continue

Clients requiring approved vendors to utilize bounty jobs

Hi Folks;
Happy New Year!
A large and steady client for over a decade is requiring its vendors to use the bounty portal.
As a seasoned recruiter I find no value in bounty and it takes out the human element and surtaxes my fee.
Has anyone had this experience and how did they remedy the situation?
Thank you!

Recruit me not my Facebook account

I titled this post to focus on recruiting not politics...I'd like to see more candidates take the suggestions below (in case you don't feel like reading the article):

Use a Modified Name

Using a completely false name is against Facebook's terms of use, and accounts with questionable names are routinely deleted...so something like J.S. McCain is OK, while Little Old Ladys Killer (an actual Facebook listing) might… Continue

Houston Expansion

My company Chronos Consulting has several thousand relatively recent vacancies in the oil and gas sector globally - places like Spain, Russia, Argentina, Brazil, Middle East etc. You can check these out at www.chronosconsulting.com or any of the thirty oil and gas groups we have on ning and LinkedIn e.g. Think Oil !. We have been working mainly with foreign majors but now we have been engaged by several US majors. This month we are also acquiring the assets of a publically listed mining and oil… Continue

What to say when a Recruiter's fly is open

[this has nothing to do with recruiting; just used the word recruiter to get the eyeballs]

Saying your fly is open is so old school. So whenever you see a recruiter with their barn door wide open, try some of these:

  • Dr. Kimble has escaped!
  • I can see the gun of Navarone.
  • The cucumber has left the salad.
  • Your pod bay door is open, Hal.
  • Your soldier ain't so unknown now.
  • Elvis Junior has LEFT the…

I'm sure use these in our blog posts

Lake Superior State University "maverick" word-watchers, fresh from the holiday "staycation" but without an economic "bailout" even after a "desperate search," have issued their 34th annual List of Words to Be Banished from the Queen's English for Mis-use, Over-use and General Uselessness. This year's list may be more "green" than any of the previous lists and includes words and phrases that people from "Wall Street to Main Street" say they love "not so much" and wish to have erased from… Continue

Understanding the differences; Acting on the commonalities…

The common practice, when looking at the prospects of selecting the right individual for an overseas assignment, is usually to focus on the individual’s technical/functional skills, with the assumption that it will be sufficient to operate successfully across borders. I recently collaborated with Brian Sun, Managing Partner from Orion China, on a presentation to visiting US EMBA students, from Purdue University (Chicago), aimed at highlighting the characteristics of leaders who can seamlessly… Continue

Digging Into RecruitingBlogs.com v 2.01

(Jan 02, 2009) I'm entering this new year with a problem. These days, more than half of my communications are through social networks like RBC, Facebook and Twitter. More natural and less formal than freestanding email systems, each tool has its own utility and its own idiosyncrasies.

Twitter offers a flow of really fresh professional information tinged with…
