Employee Referrals are regarded as one of the best ways to get quality applicants. Whether you chose to build a program through email, social media, or by simply posting flyers in your office to solicit them, there are some general guidelines you should follow to ensure that you continue to get them.

1. Ideas are not opportunities. Ideas are cheap, plentiful, and disposable.
2. Good opportunities are required for good business.
3. People make up the personality of a business.
4. A business is ultimately a persona of the owner in all aspects.
5. The inertia of hard work and perseverance can overcome a bad market/tough competitor.
6. A business is made of metrics. To not…

Last week I hosted the 10th Annual HR conference at the Ritz Carlton here in Grand Cayman and we invited a
number of international speakers to attend. One of whom was Ryan Kahn, host of MTV's HIRED program (@hired). Ryan spoke very well about the engagement of the Millennial's and it did strike a chord with me that we are…

I have heard this saying many times in my life, and recently I have realized this is the reason why I am in the recruiting industry. One thing at this point in my life I have never been good at is selling myself to a potential employers! I know for those of you who have trusted me to help find you a new job, this might scare you a little. Some of you may be saying; "I knew that's why this guy could not find me a job!" The reality is because of this fact, I…

The Houston Gulf Coast Symposium on HR Issues was this Wednesday and Thursday. The sessions that I attended were excellent. Thank you to the exhibitors for their financial support! A couple of the presenters mentioned that in a recent survey, more CEOs interviewed sited Human Capital as their top challenge than any other concern. HR expertise is more important now than ever and it is finally being recognized. Recruiting, engagement, and retention are now key concerns on the minds in the…

During an advising call with a client this week, she reported lackluster performance by one of her company’s locations. As we dug into the issue, it became clear that the members of the sales team were fishing with the wrong net.
Salespeople have the equivalent of nets in their sales efforts. Some use wide nets, like those on a shrimp boat, that bring in many possibilities, allowing them to pick and choose the best customers. Others employ the equivalent of a small aquarium net,…

Here is our weekly feature in which we share the top articles we enjoyed from the past week about recruitment marketing, social recruiting and anything else in the recruiting space. In this article, we’ll be talking about spy sourcing tips, Google’s hiring process, social recruiting, HR technology and eHarmony joining the recruiting fray.
Before we get to the articles, I have a quick reminder. The Candidate Experience Awards…

I am constantly amazed at how poorly many company switchboards handle incoming telephone calls. How your phone is answered and how that call is handled says so much about your business.
Just today whilst phoning clients and prospective clients I have had company names barked at me, been put on hold without being asked, been put straight through to voicemail, and my…

How much of what was announced in the budget will actually become law?
Given that this is an election year with the current government’s chances of being re-elected are low, that is the question in everyone's mind. As it was expected budget deficit, disability scheme and spend on education etc. are confirmed. I shall not go into the macro economic items, but will focus on what are the tax, super and other…

As if last week wasn’t bad enough, yesterday our Regional Director Desmond sent out an ‘All Staff’ email to let us know he’d be “making a few changes”.
I read the first few lines of the email …
“We are lucky enough to have some great clients that constantly are in need of awesome candidates.”
Blah blah blah …

I work in an industry that is about as global as it gets. I'm curious to see if anyone is recruiting for positions in the US that don't require any proficiency of the English language. If so, how do you post, screen, onboard, and manage employees who do not speak, read, and understand English at all? We have determined a few potential positions where English may not be required, but are trying to figure out how other companies handle this.
Do you post in multiple…

There is no question that Registered Nurses (RNs) play an integral role in modern healthcare. As the population ages and healthcare reform requires all Americans to get insurance, possibly pushing more peple into the healthcare system, the services of RNs will become even more vital. The question is, how will hosptials and other healthcare facilities deal with this demand?
A…

Not a week goes by that I don't hear someone complaining about their displeasure with an application process. Common complaints revolve around submitting a resume to a "black hole". They never receive a response. They spent an hour on the complicated online tool for submitting an application only to receive an immediate message : DECLINE.
I don't think it…

Construction Recruitment Agencies prove to be equally beneficial for both job seekers as well as companies that look for employees. Companies often have jobs at various levels listed, for which they need to find the right people with the right set of skills and qualifications to match. Construction recruitment agencies, which have a list of such jobs as well as a database of people looking for a job change or their first jobs, connect the right talents to the right jobs to…

Both mobile and social media skills are growing in demand for HR professionals. We thought it would be interesting to compare these 2 growing talents in the human resources space, their hiring trends, and which is more in-demand in the US. In April, there were just over 119,000 jobs for HR professionals in the US. Approximately, 4,000 jobs required social media skills, representing about 3.4% of HR hiring. In comparison, just over 2,100 HR ads required mobile skills – or about 1.8% of HR…

I'll make this quick: Temp to Direct is a bad choice. It's a "we really want to hire someone, I think, but it would be great if we didn't have to make a firm decision - so let's roll a few unemployed people through here and see if someone knocks it out of the park."
Dear Client - here are your choices: Unemployed people who have no other choice or contractors who will happily "pretend" they "may" be interested in a full time role.
Contractors contract. …
