Obviously, every company culture is different and sometimes what hiring managers think and say they want is exactly the opposite of what they really mean by fit. Do you find this to be the case in your recruiting experience? If so, what's the main cause of this discrepancy?
In job opportunity listings, we often see terms such as:
- Self-starter
- Innovative
- High tolerance for ambiguity
- Entrepreneurial
- Takes…

TOR-TO-REEEE-CHEEEEEE.....
This was the talk I was waiting for. Mark Tortorici (@marknexus) of netPolarity just wrapped up an amazing session. Where to begin?
This session was all about turning non-technical liberal arts majors who stumbled into recruiting into TECHNICAL RECRUITERS. That's right guys, there's a RIGHT WAY and a WRONG WAY to call engineers. And developers. Or any other technical person. Side…

YOU GUYS. So far we've had two speakers and they are not even the ones that I am excited about. (sorry, I'm new LOL)
We're off to an amazing start and I can't believe how much I've learned just in the first hour.
Joel Spolsky led off with engineering must haves and how recruiters blow it. More to…

I have to admit I'm in PARADISE.
I have my doubts if anyone followed the past 30 days journey into an unknown future when a month ago I decided to dump what I was working on as a recruiter and start from "start".
For the past four days, I've been tucked away in a little corner of the USA. There are palm trees, little signs of humanity, gourmet food,…

" Our world" is consumed with sourcing. More to the point - it seems as if the only matter of importance is sourcing with social media. Faux careers are being made daily by pumping out the latest white paper, infographic or conference keynote on how to approach your "social" strategy.
Feel free to source/recruit however you want. I don't really find it that difficult in most cases. To me…

It was hard to miss the big story this week in social media. But what might it mean for recruiters? Could the petition created by Anna R. on change.org force the professional social network to adopt a blocking feature? With close to 7K…

My first HR conference, and helped set a world record. That’s right the largest gathering of HR Professionals happened this week in Chicago. As a recruiter, speaker and qualified HR professional I decided it was time I make the annual pilgrimage to HR mecca and I have to say I was not disappointed.
15,000 + HR professionals, recruiters, relocation service…

Last month I spoke to a group of business owners. I introduced the 30 million strong Millennial Generation and they all sat back and crossed their arms. When I explained that they already owned a piece of their brand, many business owners guffaw and told me, “No, they don’t. Oh my God, they are so lazy and entitled, they just want their own way.”
Think again!
Gone are the days…

Coming off an awesome Father's Day, I felt it was appropriate to do one of my non-recruiting posts again. These are never as popular, but seem to resonate with a lot of people. Hopefully by now, most of you who are regular readers of my blogs know me. I am a passionate person, Christian, and a true family guy. I'm a recruiter by day, a blogger by night. Between…

Top 3 Reasons Why Recruiters (both corporate and external) Love Linkedin:
1) LinkedIn has become the best hunting ground for recruiters.
2) As more companies are asking their employees to become participants in “social media” candidate referral programs, more employees are using sites such as Linkedin, Facebook, Twitter – making it insanely easy…

Have you taken any calls recently from software providers? Calls where you’re promised the world if only you would switch from your existing software provider? The chances are that you’ve taken a few of these, and that’s a conservative estimate. For those of you who haven’t it begs the question, what exactly is cloud-based recruitment software, and how can it help SMEs?
Habits of the small recruitment agency

Wouldn’t you want the X-men working for you?
Professor Charles Francis Xavier, the X-men’s founder, wanted people with that something “extra,” people whose special skills were manifest yet misunderstood. He built a tool to find these unique men and women. He broke down their skills, categorized them, and finally brought them together to maximize their potential.
Professor X was in…

You’ve probably already heard (because I am a shameless birthday self-promoter) that I recently turned 39. THIRTY-NINE. I remember when that was old. Birthday celebrations at 39 are a bit different. No more hoping for the latest toy or new clothes, wondering who’s going to show up to my party. Now all I really want is some good wine and someone else to make dinner. I did something else June 6, and while it wasn’t necessarily a “gift”, I hope that it gave something valuable to…

So interestingly enough, this week I had to put the Ki-Bosh on an employer client of mine that I was working with for a little over 1 year now. This employer connected with me last year with multiple requisitions for Engineering Staff. We signed an agreement and I started my searches. It was about 60 days into it, when I realized that they were passing on highly qualified…

This is Day 11 of the journey from the point where I started from scratch. To be quite frank, I'm feeling a little wobbly and brain dead that the best thing I could come up with was a misleading title for this. I have no profound thoughts. I look back on this weeks activities and see no, as this guy at MRI used to say at all of the conferences, "nuggets of wisdom". I look back and see the metrics.
I mentioned one time before that we're, as headhunters (3rd party recruiters), NOT…
