(Reposted from Make HR Happen 6/6/2012)

Quality of Hire as a metric receives a lot of attention. Theories abound about the importance of QoH and how to measure it. There are 998 different theories about QoH. That number (that I just made up) is about as real as most of the…

Urban Legends about Recruiters / Myths

I've been a recruiter for 12 years and still every day, I come across people who have no idea what I do for a living.  They simply don't understand the concept of a recruiter.  As if that isn't enough, there is tons of misinformation out there about who we are and how we earn a living.  I hope this clarifies it for the general public.  To me, this is a PSA. :)

#1 - Giving someone the title, makes it so.

Just because you call your Honda a…

TOMS Shoes and Your Business

TOMS shoes are a feel good purchase.

Buy a pair today, give a pair to someone in need tomorrow. It’s a great cause.

But TOMS has been criticized for ignoring the root of a much bigger problem. The argument is, sure it’s great to provide a kid in a third world country a new pair of shoes. But, they’re still poor.…

There are no cover bands in the rock and roll hall of fame - differentiate the Scott Ginsberg way

We are all individuals, and we like to be thought of as individuals. Not numbers, not the guy from XYZ Co, not so-and-so’s husband, wife, brother, boss etc. Just us, as we are.

So why is it then that we so often hide that real us to project the ‘me’ we think we need to be?

When it comes to business and particularly in recruitment companiess, this is…

Facebook and Job Seeking

It is estimated that over 80% of employers conduct background checks on potential candidates that they are looking to hire, and some of these background checks now include social media checks on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter accounts. Almost everyone is on Facebook these days, and while it's great for your personal life and for keeping in contact…

The DNA of a perm fee agreement

The fee agreement should be simple shouldn't it?  I mean it should be as simple as, A agrees to do this for B and B agrees to pay X to A for the service rendered PERIOD.

Unfortunately, life isn't that simple but it's not terribly complex either.  There are only a finite amount of things can actually happen to potentially derail an otherwise successful placement.  So lets discuss what a good fee agreement, in my opinion should be made of, the DNA, if you…

The DTF Job Market Is Strong

Someone asked me last week how business is.  When I told them it was great, they said that is really good because they see us as a leading indicator.  I don’t really see us as a leading indicator and after giving it some thought I think there is a general misunderstanding of what our market is.

As third party recruiters, the overall job market is not our market.  The overall job market still stinks.  Unemployment is way too high and the long-term unemployment numbers are terrible.…

The Candidate Experience: 3 Ideas on Where to Start

I’ve been writing a lot on about the candidate experience over the past several weeks and one question I’ve been getting a good deal is “where should I start?”  I tend to throw out a lot of things you can do to improve about the candidate experience and realize that it would be helpful to focus on a few that I think are some of the most important.

And while I think…

The Counter Offer Candidate

Theyre back! Counter offers have made a recovery along with the demand for talent.  Always a possibility, they are now a probability when a quality/qualified employees gets a new job offer.

Im not going to re-hash all the reasons not to take a counter offer. We've all heard/read them a thousand times through out our careers. I've certainly counseled on the dangers, etc. with practically every candidate (and client) I've ever…

Good ideas: how job seekers would make job boards better

I recently had the privilege of hosting #HFChat – the HireFriday Tweet-fest organized by @HRMargo and @CyndyTrivella.  HireFriday is all about helping job seekers find work. Recruiters, HR professionals, and the occasional job board doctor pose and answer common questions about the job hunt. It’s a wonderful event for all involved.

My subject – surprisingly enough! – was “Making job boards work for you”. The conversation ranged from the basics (setting up job alerts, using job boards…
