Don’t let your job search keep you down!

If you are looking for a job, now is not the time to let the pressures of your job search keep you down. Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve had conversations with many, many people that have spent the last 6 months+ on the job hunt. In their minds they have tried every tip or tool known to man:

- Rewrote resumes

- Posted and searched on every job board

- Attended every network meeting (including virtual) in a 60 mile radius

- Sent resumes to countless warm leads and… Continue

Using a Recruiter to Find a Job!

It’s a tough job market out there! You’re struggling finding your next job and it dawns on you… “I should use a recruiter!” “They can be my agent, and they’ll find a job for me!” Wrong!

There’s no question, a recruiter can be a wonderful resource. I am one… have been for over 20 years and love the fact that I often get to help people find their dream job. I feel like it’s been a good day when I’ve been of value to someone. However, although I want everyone I have conversations with… Continue

RecruitFest! 09 reflections of the past

How exciting is that? But technically you don't actually "speak"speak at RF. It is a dialog, a conversation, the "UN-conference". I went to it last year, not really knowing another person who was attending, at least nobody I had met in person. Jason Davis went out of his way to make me feel comfortable (thanks, Jason). I have to say that it exceeded all of my expectations by far.

Want some advice?

1. Be prepared to discuss… Continue

Creative image hosting that is free and Eco Friendly

Recently I started a business that creates products from recycled material. We use all kinds of things from clothing to leftover wood. Any way I was researching the net for services that would help me promote my business with out costing me anything. I found several other businesses that promised you the world and then charged you for the country! I sell products from our site on etsy, craigslist, ebay, and so on and you all know that if your not on the top or on top of the game your not going… Continue

Intuition in Recruitment - A £Multi-million gamble!

How often do we do things that just feel right? We don’t know why we do them, we probably can’t explain why but we just know it’s right. It’s been the same in recruitment for years. Recruitment consultants will tell you they get a gut feel when meeting a candidate; that they somehow know when they find someone who is right for their client, but how reliable is ‘gut feel’?

I must admit, I definitely do experience gut feel. I’m not sure if it’s because I’m a woman – after all aren’t we… Continue

Job Boards Challenging 2Q09 Numbers - Its not the Economy

In a late night posting (10:49 pm) ERE released an article about the financial results of both Monster and Careerbuilder/ Both job boards saw major drops in revenue in the 2nd Quarter - Careerbuilder by an astonishing 31% but still looking better than Monster's 37% drop. LinkedIn Help for the Clueless Job Search

A friend of mine recently moved to the Houston area and is trying to find a job as a Revenue Accountant in the Oil and Gas industry. Easy, right? Not necessarily. There are quite a few job seekers with the same skills applying to any openings that come available in that area right now. My friend needs an edge but has never done any real social networking. So I advised him to start with LinkedIn.

He had created a profile once upon a time there but never did anything with it (as…

Why Use a Recruiter in This Market???

Why use a recruiter when I’m getting piles of resumes from my ads?

In times of economic downturns companies often decide that one way to “save” money is by eliminating fees to recruiters when looking for new employees. Why shouldn’t they? After all, they post an ad online, or in the paper, and there’s a much larger stream of applicants than they’ve had in the past. “Why pay a 20% to 30% fee when I seem to be able to get plenty of people on my own?” Good question.

The… Continue

Ten trade show attendee rules

I attend two or more trade shows per year. Most of the work (business development, recruiting and client service) is accomplished on the telephone, of course. But there's nothing like getting out there and meeting people in person. Both candidates and clients.

You can see what's happening in the market and people can meet you. There's a wonderful, energized information exchange during the compressed time of a trade show.

Because of my concentration on companies making… Continue

Vacation At Your Office...

Well, August is upon us. Time for family vacations, time spent on the beach, bbq’s, school shopping for the kids, last minute house-cleaning before Labor Day and all those projects at home and at work that keep piling up. No time for vacation you say? Well, how about we plan a vacation at your office?

Whether it’s your home office or one that overlooks the ocean, everyone needs time to regroup, refresh and renew in order to get prepared for the next season. Some of us feel in order… Continue

If You See a Faded Sign by the Side of the Road that Says 15 Miles to...

If you see a faded sign by the side of the road that says 15 miles to…. Radio Shack! They have a great online store for gamers.

I have a real serious problem with companies that don’t have some type of employee referral bonus program. It’s like being asked over for dinner and having to bring the food.

So if you are one of the unfortunate recruiters stuck without an employee referral bonus program, here… Continue

Don't know what you heard about me...I'm a P.I.M.P

It's true. I am Sarah White, P.I.M.P, C.I.R, A.I.R.S, B.A and every other thing that ever came along that I can tag onto the end of my name. Over the last few weeks there have been some lengthy discussions amongst my tweeple (those are my people on twitter) about the value of certifications in our industry. I have also gotten calls from people asking me to discuss new certifications they are coming up with. Apparently, now that I have a blog, some… Continue

Position Specifications

Does it really take that much time to write out a job description? There are many jobs available in this recession, yet many recruiters are not investing the time to craft a strong message and detail the skills that they are seeking. How are they explaining the opportunities adequately to the candidate pool so that they aren't wasting their time?
