We reported a few months ago how it is taking longer and longer for hiring managers to fill direct-hire positions in their quest for the "perfect candidate." The negative impact of this is obvious to recruiters who have to get a candidate placed before they can get paid. But according to a recent post in  Top…

“Really how far is the extra mile?”

In this current job climate it is important for candidates to stand out from the crowd. However what is less clear is where to draw the line in terms of trying to attract attention and making a positive impression. A recent piece of market research conducted by bta examined where some candidates and companies think the grey areas are when it comes to going that extra mile.

We conducted interviews with two separate focus groups, one with hiring managers and directors and the…

Build Your Recruiting Site FREE

I found this while doing some reading this morning and I found it very interesting.  I think this is an awesome tool to help people get on the web quickly to advertise their company and their services.  The challenge, which goes back to the many discussions regarding the relationship between corporate recruiters and third party recruiters, is this tool makes it even easier to publicly overload, water down, and dilute the third party recruiting space.  If building recruiting sites is this…

A Degree of Re-enacted Hoopla

hoop·la - /ˈhuplɑ/ noun . 1. bustling excitement or activity; commotion; hullabaloo; to-do. 2. sensational publicity; ballyhoo.

In a recent article written by John Roach for msnbc.com entitled “The revolution at work is here”, the suggestion is made that the promise of the dot.com internet era of the late ‘90s of how drastically…

Is it Time for a Candidate Bill of Rights?

Fairly recently, influentials such as ERE and Monster were working to build momentum regarding the creation of a “Bill of Rights” for job seekers; specifically, to greatly improve the candidate experience. Due to the enormous amount of talk at the recent #truBoston event and on Twitter chats regarding employer branding and applicant black holes, I’ve been thinking about this issue again.

With recruiter transparency and forced accountability through social media, organizations clearly… Continue

A newbie’s 10 considerations for social media recruitment (UPDATED)

Have you seen the film  A Bugs Life?  If you have you’ll remember the scene where the two bugs are flying perilously close to one of those blue light thingys that emit a fatal electric shock if an insect flies into it:

“Don’t go into the light!”

“I can’t help it.  Its beautiful”

*Zzzzzap*

That’s me…

Not All Recruiters or Recruitment Agencies are Vultures...or Vampires...

Not all recruiters or recruitment agencies are vultures...or vampires for that matter.  When they cold call--they simply want to help in the recruitment challenges an employer faces.
If they appear to be stalking you as a candidate, or as an employer rep--they are simply trying to get access to interested parties, preferably decision makers--and they are 100% dedicated to a mutual benefit.

Yes, there are some bad apples; some…

Should African countries restrict work permits for Expatriate Job Seekers?

A major concern facing companies in Africa is a shortage of qualified and skilled talent to fill job vacancies in the organisation. Companies have no choice but to recruit for these jobs overseas. Many African countries make it very difficult for individuals to get work permits, saying that these jobs should be filled by locals. Is this argument valid? What are the impacts on the companies and the country?

Politicians, when defending restrictive employment visa regimes usually argue…

Two Ears, Two Eyes and One Mouth….Use in that Order and you will be great! (Repost)

Back when I started in the recruiting industry, (I can hear you now: “Yeah, yeah. Uphill both ways, against the wind and in 6 feet of snow, you old fart!”) we did not have all the tools we do today. Now, don’t get me wrong - I love our tools. It has made our recruiting efforts much easier however; the only “tool” that has not changed and WILL always remain the most important is our ability to communicate!…

Pay It Forward - At Work

Pay it Forward is an expression that most of us know because of the Kevin Spacey movie that came out about 10 years ago.  The movie was based on a book by Catherine Ryan Hyde, and the expression itself may have originated close to 100 years ago.   Now there is a pay it forward foundation, and a “movement.”

The concept is easy:  When you are the beneficiary of a good…

Actually, I won’t be returning your crappy cold call voice mail. Here’s why.

Fortunately I don’t get these very often… I’m one of a handful of recruiters and rather new to my company, so the vultures haven’t caught up with me yet.  However – earlier this week I had FOUR horrible voicemails in a row, from FOUR awful sales people.  Three agencies and a job board.  It went a little something like this –

“Hi Amy, this is (first name only) with (unintelligible company name).  I’m calling today to introduce you to my company.  We are the…
