The new year is bringing new pay requirements for exempt computer professionals in California.
State law allows certain computer software employees to be exempt from state overtime requirements if they receive a minimum hourly, monthly, or yearly pay rate. The required rates are based on the California Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical workers and are evaluated on a yearly basis, according to the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM).

Today is not about business. Today, more than any day before us, the message cannot be about business.
The people of MY HR are made up of parents first, professionals second. We are a busy staffing firm in CT not far from Newtown and we know all too painfully that today our message cannot be about business.
Today must be about 20 tiny souls and 6 selfless heroes. It must be about first responders who upon discovering unspeakable horror carried on saving and shielding survivors…

In looking ahead to 2013, as talent communities gain in popularity, we are predicting a social renaissance of the corporate career website. This is a direct result of the social enterprise’s need to connect with top talent on the candidate’s terms. The best talent expects a certain level of respect, transparency and ease as they engage with potential employers and make critical career decisions. Only…

I live about 20 minutes from Sandy Hook CT. My wife and I have a family friend who attends Sandy Hook Elementary. He is OK. It is safe to say that our entire state is in horrified shock and deep, deep grief. Malls are busy yet quiet. People are driving slower and there seems to be a lot more courtesy. Parents are holding and watching their children more. Strangers…

There is a lot going on in this past week which shattered what is supposed to be for many a positive time of the year. The airwaves have been flooded with bad news this past week. A quick summary of what propels me to put forth a call for action - a "take back to a positive direction our holiday season" kind of call to action:
1. My company ADP has an office in Clackamas, OR, and I serve many clients there to assist with their staffing needs. On December 11, that community faced…

This afternoon we continued our family tradition and attended a performance by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra who introduced a new show entitled the Lost Christmas Eve. The center piece of the performance was a story of a business man who years earlier had the unfortunate luck of losing his wife during child birth and having a supposedly disabled child who he essentially disowned. It was a fitting response to some of the feelings that I have undergone in the last 48…

Have you ever had a candidate that you thought was a slam dunk. There was no way this candidate was not going to get the job. I often get asked by the slightly less experienced and slightly more nervous recruiters I meet (online or offline), how we can compete with corporate recruiters and all the latest DIY social recruiting tools and my answer is 2 fold:
Not directly anyway. You must always understand your market and build a valuable niche and service for it.
As agency recruiters we provide an outsource service and by default as a service provider we do things…

What makes one recruiter better than another? Are some recruiters better at finding talent? Is it only about finding the right talent? Does the number of candidates found make you best?
The list can go on and on, but I think you get the point.
Starting my recruiting career on the agency side I have been exposed to A LOT of different recruiters with VERY different styles in recruiting. Some of these recruiters love the quantity of candidates, while some of…

Mirror, Mirror!!
How we communicate with our coworkers, hiring managers and candidates will impact our ability to do our job. The question is how do we do it, how do we communicate with all those people with all those different personalities and communication styles.
Well it is very simple, You mirror the person…

You might think that pornography and hiring have little to do with each other. You'd be wrong.
In essence, looking for a job (or looking for specific talent) is a type of mating dance, and I often compare both endeavors to dating - the comparison works well. I think hiring is broken right now - I've felt that way for a while. It still happens; I am still making a living finding people that companies will pay a fee to hire (thank goodness). But I see more broken processes than…
