Since the recruiting environment is constantly evolving as new technologies become available and more widely adopted, we were curious to see what skills or tools are currently being advertised in Recruiter job ads.
What (hard) skills should Recruiters cultivate for their career path?
If you're filling these roles, how hard-to-fill are they likely to be? We…

If you are hoping to land a job or want to keep your current job, you have to realize that your personal brand will affect a company. A wrong step could leave a company a lot of clean-up—your picture gets placed in the paper for something illegal; you guest post a controversial article; a joke on Twitter gets misinterpreted; etc. For this reason, companies are looking for…

In recent discussions with two quite different clients in Singapore they mentioned that they had each failed to resolve critical hiring needs that had originated well over a year ago.
Firm one had known for some time that they were losing a partner in a strategically vital practice area and would require a replacement more or less immediately to maintain client…

Business is quite robust so far in 2014. Record-level business for me, even as a 25-year recruiter, tripling all of last year's revenues within the first 60 days. I was informed that I have a new offer coming out today, for a candidate I have known and had in my network for at least a decade, finally getting a chance to place him, and he is very excited. Another candidate for another position also successfully submitted his resignation today, and set his start…

If you’re a sceptic of recruitment agencies, chances are it is due to a bad experience where you’ve been shown a complete lack of integrity and candidate care.
The recruiter probably expressed little interest about your individual requirements and deemed that your CV had enough keywords in it to send it over to their client. Unfortunately there are many of these…

Once upon a time, and a beri-beri good time it was, there was a poorly-researched article about e-recruiters in The Atlantic magazine recently, which prominently featured me, without acknowledgment, and without any effort at journalistic integrity or any effort to determine the truth of the situation:…

As I shared in many previous writings, the biggest engine for jobs growth is small companies and the entrepreneurs that run them. Research from the Small Business Administration (SBA) proves that these business risk takers created almost 70% of the net new jobs in the U.S. over the past several decades prior to the latest recession. During my…

Running a distributed or virtual team is much easier than you think! Perhaps you are thinking about employing a team of freelancers to manage your software development or maybe you need virtual receptionists and administrators to handle the day to day running of your business. When managed well, a distributed team can increase productivity and help you to reduce overheads, but it really does need to be managed exceptionally well. There…

I like words. I probably like them too much. I spend a lot of time thinking about words and the meanings they hold. But thinking about words and their impact is not a waste of time for me as a recruiter. So often words, either spoken or written, are all I have in my arsenal as I strive to engage and enthuse.
Recruiting is a muscular word that, for me, evokes an…

Although the employer mandate provision of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) has effectively been delayed again, there seems to be a renewed "buzz" around the healthcare reform law, often known as Obamacare. Maybe it’s because workers are now required to carry insurance, or maybe companies are just being proactive. But for whatever reason, we are noticing an increase in the number of recruiters asking how Obamacare will affect hiring and recruiting.
Of course, that is…

About 6 months ago, I replied to an interesting post on LinkedIn. The thread was started by a recruitment agency director who posted a question asking for suggestions in relation to a new recruitment software provider. The surprising thing was that he was looking to stop using one of the “major brands” in the industry for something else. I’m not…

Companies attempting to keep costs low may consider recruiting independent contractors instead of permanent employees.
While the notion may seem attractive on its face, however, anyone responsible for recruiting talent should understand the critical differences between the two before choosing which to recruit.
Conflating the two, even inadvertently, can…

One of the toughest things about running your own contract staffing back-office is keeping up with the myriad of state and federal employment laws.
Now recruiting and staffing firms also have to worry about the growing number of local laws.
And once you have realized that there is a law in a locality where you place contractors, you have to determine if it…
