Every article I seem to read at the moment extols the virtues of using social media to network, some to the extreme; I mean really does having 500+ contacts on LinkedIn really help? Does having 500+ facebook friends really get you that job of a lifetime? I would say maybe. Now I would not go as far as Thierry Breton, CEO of Atos who has banned email (http://www.forbes.com/sites/tykiisel/2011/11/30/ceo-bans-email/)…

As we are nearing the end of the interview process, a client asked me to get references from a candidate. I was blown away when the candidate emailed me and refused to supply references telling me that she did not want her references bothered until she had accepted the job. First time this has happened in 27 years.
Now I have had a candidate who had a key reference at an existing company, but other references at previous employers and I made an offer pending the last…

We all know the kind of clients we would like to work with, but how are we going to get them?
Those of you who have attended my workshops and seminars will know that I take a very soft approach to professional selling. First we sell ourselves to our prospects, starting with Knowing, moving to Liking and working towards Trusting.
Business is not about hitting…

It finally happened! The call is made, the client – after months of wooing, well placed marketing, phone calls, cold calls and general “keeping in touch”..the client has an opening…and wants you to be a part of their recruitment efforts. You diligently go to your internal base, search out candidates through your social media/recruiting contacts- make the calls, qualify, disqualify and requalify candidate’s interest in the position. Ask all candidates about any companies they have…

I have seen many articles written about how companies are using job boards and direct hire methods to cut out the recruiter, and true there are roles that can be hired with little or no interview required (these methods really inspire employee engagement from the outset….not). True you can get a 100 applicants from LinkedIn, or such like, and have the HR administrator or internal recruiter spend a few hours sifting through the CVs, then a few hours more arranging tests, plus a few more…

When I think about engaging your Talent Community, I like to think of it in two main categories: the Push and the Pull.
For the push, this is all the content you create and push out to your Talent Network of recruiting contacts. From email & SMS blasts to video & blogging content to pod-casts to job opportunities, your a conducting one way communication with these specific groups of contacts. While this is not ideal, these methods are still extremely valuable in…

Working with recruitment agencies to find the right candidates for job vacancies is increasingly seen as a cost-effective and productive way of working for many companies.
The old misconception of – consultants will just send any candidates’ CVs and charge expensive fees – may still be held by some companies but this is often due to a lack of understanding about the features and benefits of recent recruitment agency’s service, competition and market demands.
1. Client’s…

The rapidly growing SME sector in India has created tremendous opportunities for recruitment and HR service firms today. Finding the right employee at the right cost and also ensuring growth opportunity for the employees can sometimes be challenging for the company management and this is where we come into the picture. We take over the recruitment department’s responsibility or sometimes work in tandem with them to give the company the right set of employees.
I am particularly excited…

Changing jobs a couple of times in the last 2 years has made me really look at myself and my belief structure in this field, refine this, perhaps even formulate one (or two). I've come to understand what I believe in, when it comes to Recruiting.
It's not about just going to work, hiring people and going home. I think people over complicate things to (sometimes) justify their own existence, pad out their "personal brand", push their agenda or product, or suck up to "Recruiting…

Power intoxicates; Absolute Power intoxicates absolutely. When you are holding a position that wields some power, it becomes necessary to gauge its impact on yourself and others too. This power could be as a result of money ( in most cases ), industry knowledge, expertise in niche segment, networking or contacts, age or work experience and wisdom etc. There are many factors leading to Power earned, gained or thrust upon you !
As a recruitment consultant, I feel I have certain power…

After spending 22 years of my career in a work atmosphere where I depended on my perception and negotiating skills to win sales situations, I have made it a practice by default, to hire the ‘Right’ while interviewing! There have been many moments when the time allotted to interview each candidate was ‘very’ less and the tendency or opportunity to make a mistake quite high! But, one should realize that interviewing has to be ‘task ahead’ related, current situation specific, meet job role…

I read this article the other day (about killings apparently because of Facebook) and it really disturbed me, it bought me back to a
conversation I had recently about people becoming disconnected on LinkedIn (I'm not sure about the official term for that)
Social Media is both all about personal communication and about anonymity.
You can…

The recruitment industry is littered with bad and expensive hiring mistakes. Nearly all agencies at some point have hired a consultant that doesn’t work out. Most of us have an example of the experienced consultant who promises the world, talks the talk, and is always on the verge of a big fee, but month after month has little to show. Or the rookie who is full of…

The candidate is just thrilled with the offer and says this is the nicest employer they’ve ever dealt with.
How can you not be incredibly happy for this candidate and excited for them in their new position? How about when you’re dealing with someone that you placed there 7 years ago and he’s been through a couple of promotions and is now the hiring manager, having a solid impact on the company. And then there’s the person you know needs a job and a change, a new start, and…

Here is how my day went last Thursday...
6:00 AM
Woke up, grabbed the iPhone, checked my work email, checked the news, played Words with Friends (addicted and not ashamed), got out of bed, walked the dog, fed the dog, picked out clothes, checked my work email again, got in the shower, headed to work.
8:00 AM
Walked in the building (Tower Place in Buckhead, GA), went the shop to get my coffee and bagel, headed to the office, logged into Citrix, enjoyed my raison…

It’s likely that you and your company will be interested in implementing a social staffing and collaboration strategy this year. Maybe you’ve done so already and kudos to you…you’re ahead of this ever changing curve. It’s glaringly obvious how social media has changed the way that recruiters and staffing professionals do business.
