Resolutions Be Damned!

New Year So other than the parties I believe that the best part of new year - the part that people just LOVE - is setting resolutions. Oh, I know - you're probably already picking up on my sarcasm, right? Of course, maybe you don't even make a New Year's resolution because you know that you just won't lose that extra 10lbs or you'll never find the time to pick up that old hobby again. But hey, let's chat a bit about them anyhow.

First - my resolutions from last year and how we ended… Continue

Paul DeBettignies Quoted In Minneapolis StarTribune Article On LinkedIn

As posted on the MN Headhunter blog:

In the January 4th 2009 Sunday career section of the Minneapolis StarTribune I was quoted in this article from Brett Pyrtle, Getting LinkedIn For Career Success:

In a world where business networks and relationships are often sustained in virtual reality, having an online presence is increasingly critical to career success. That's why a…

Zvents.com

Having the ability to source and uncover top talent is crucial to your success. Sometimes the tools we use come from non-traditional means.

I’ve recently come across an outstanding tool that is not at all meant for recruiters but you know what that means. As a breed, we are probably the more sticky and intrusive people around, but in the end we find people jobs and that’s what it’s all about.

Enter Zvents.com. Here is a little background. Based in San Mateo Ca.,… Continue

Catch-22

Dear Claudia,

I totally don’t know what to do about this. I saw my boss and one of my workmates out on a date, although they didn’t see me. How do I know it wasn’t a business meeting? Let’s just say that things were a little steamy at the dinner table, and I’m not talking about the vegetables. I was shocked, because I had no clue at the office; to make things worse my boss’ wife is my best friend. This isn’t really the time to go looking for a new recruiting job, and I’d hate to…

The ideal experience for the passive candidate online

Have you ever put yourself in the shoes of a passive candidate?

It’s a dreadful experience. You’re happy with your job, you enjoy your coworkers, salary and benefits. The last thing you’re thinking about is working somewhere else.

Yet in the back of your mind is that little voice telling you it’s time for change. “Hey, we’ve been doing this for 5 years now! Can we move on, already?!”

Your goal then as a recruiter is to talk to that little voice, to convince the… Continue

Ami G. on Tuesday: Stack 'em high and sell 'em cheap...job postings that is

It seems the politicos at The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) have teamed up with JobTarget marketeers and are set to publish a 2009 Job Board Savings Book.

Apparently, you can use the coupons at over 1,000 niche, diversity and regional job boards that are slashing up to half the price on their job postings,… Continue

Being a Smart Recruiter is knowing your customer and creating a relationship with that person. Your customer knows exactly what he/she is looking for and can provide a right direction. Once that raphor and trust is made. You will have the world in your pocket. Your customer can provide you with sample resumes of current employees that will help you build queries on data bases. His or Her staff can provide you resources i.e. Alumni Associations where Recruiters cannot connect with..For example… Continue

What makes me a smart recruiter ?

Well the jury is out on that, and I dont work as a pro recruiter, but I do recruit heavily for my own firm and it's one of my most important roles.

1) I look for character not skills. One does not change, while skillz come and go- often surprsingly fast.

2) I dont get hung up on credentials per se- they can be important/critical in some contexts, meaningless in others.

3) I do see recruiting as probably the most important element of leadership

4) I… Continue

Dayak anyone?

While at my last contract recruiting assignment, I was approached by an account executive for Dayak, a website which seems to work along the same principle as Bounty. I posted my job specs with updates on a regular basis, but did find that the lack of direct communication between me and the agency recruiters resulted in substandard candidates for my positions. I did not hire anyone using this tool.

What makes me a Smart Recruiter smartrecruiters

What makes me a smart recruiter after 20 years. I hate to open my secret but want to show you how smart i am.

Once you do a database search most people just start calling. Many data bases sort in ABC order. I always go to the end of the ABC and start calling at the end. Most of these candidate never get a call. So they are so glad when I call.

Also I tell candidates to list there resumes twice. for example.

What makes me a smart recruiter

1 Say what you do, and do what you say.
2 Make sure that you keep your word, your name is your virtue.
3 Always return phone calls and emails, it can be brief - just do it.
4 Referrals - treat them all with respect, they could be your next client!
5 Today is today and tomorrow is another day - remain positive!
Other than those five things, remain true, passionate and love what you do!
