So like all vocations and companies, staffing has their own language of sorts. Most of it revolves around acronyms and abbreviations. I know in the US Army alone they have a "book of Acronyms". Actually more like a set of books, in that the "book" is composed of 28 books each book being 400+ pages of acronyms.
Well the Staffing one is not that big. Today I am going to state what some of the more common acronyms stands for. For a definition, simple put the following string in…

This is something everybody uses; yet on a number of occasions they feel silence trumps silly, or banal, or demonstrating that they don’t have all the knowledge they need to proceed. Its human nature to want to have all the facts before proceeding on a project, just as it should be human nature to want to confirm information if there is any possible chance your results will be contrary to what is expected.
Not everybody has all the skills in the world needed to accomplish every goal.…

I have to brag - I can't help it... My search, recruiting and staffing firm was tired of every Tom, Dick and Harry applying to our job postings - it was just too easy! We'd get hundreds of unqualified candidates responding to postings they hadn't even read! We decided to change the game and it works! Now, if a candidate wants to reply to our postings, they have to make an effort! We added TalentRooster.com technology to our postings, which will require all candidates to answer questions…

Great recruiters need to understand their industry, their company, the competition, and the business environment for the types of people they place. You need to be a mile deep and an inch wide!
I find that recruiters are easily seduced. In fact, truthfully we can be a bit tarty. A client wants help with a hire that’s outside our area of expertise and we jump right in. And then we find we don’t have the skills, knowledge, or connections to do a good job. We waste time, we get…

My Pay It Forward post was spurred by reading an article on putting an employee’s future potential ahead of a company’s immediate gain. Perhaps the reason for the impact that article made was the recognition that, due to the effects of this…

Last month I posted a blog titled "Recruiting, How to do it Better and Safer" In it I listed why employers typically engage in a pre-employment screening program and why choosing a licensed private investigator who is a CRA would be beneficial. The question that begs to be asked is, what to look for when selecting a private investigation agency or employment agency and what will the final report include? After all your…

I recently had lunch with an old colleague of mine who is in the front lines of the job search market. He also has a recruiting background and was telling me of his woeful and harried efforts to find a job. Sharp guy, leader, knows his stuff and could work circles around most newbies in a heartbeat. Trouble is, there just aren’t many jobs out there for seasoned professionals.
To add insult to injury, a Corporate Recruiter called him last week on a job he’d applied…

Whether it’s buying a new car, being Theo Epstein (the General Manager of the Boston Red Sox) or placing an advertisement for your company, you are always seeking ultimate value you are receiving from the resources that you dedicate to a specific commodity. The more value for each dollar you can earn, the better. This is especially true in this economy when you are looking to recruit top talent to your…

Mobile is omnipresent – at times it seems as though more people are on their mobile devices that actually talking to each other. Butwhat role is mobile playing in recruitment?
This was the question I set out to answer a few months back. (Thanks again to my co-sponsor on this endeavor, AllTheTopBananas!). The survey, which was targeted at HR and recruiting professionals in the U.S.…

While in some sectors there is a call to ease up on background checks, the obvious question that comes to mind is who bears the brunt of it if an employee who snaps out and commits to violence in the workplace turns out to have a history as a convicted felon? Why the employer, of course. The employer will incur the damages, the litigation and liability issues the public embarrassment and the knowledge that employees were harmed in the working environment.
When violence is committed…

I find this whole recruiting train of thought amusing...
With Linked In, Facebook, Twitter, and myriad other avenues of engagement - worrying about where the best site to place a job ad...well, er - it sounds like a discussion from a 100 years ago listening to two buggy whip salesmen chatting about which blacksmith to align themselves with...while Ford, Nash, Olds and…

Over the years I have read numerous surveys regarding the reasons that job seekers use when looking for a job, considering a career change or deciding on a job offer. When job seekers are asked why they are looking for a new job or a career change or when asked what was their reason for leaving (RFL) their last few positions, the reasons most often sited are a lack of…

I had to write this little blog because I just got an email from someone looking for a position with my company.
There are a lot of tips and advise that I can give to job seekers. but this is a piece of advise that seems so basic that I feel like it should be well known. Unfortunately, many people don't do it. The advise is....be basic with your email address. Or maybe not basic, but try not to be so off the wall.
If you are applying for a position,…

Why do some companies achieve nonstop growth and perpetual profits while many others do not? The answer is the simple focus of consistently executing the key actions and behaviors that promote a sustainable business.
One important aspect of being Simply Profitable™ is that your sales function must persist to the 80th percentile and, when it does, your closure rate of business will substantially increase. So, what is the 80th percentile? It’s the fact that 80% of all business is…
