Making a Fresh Offer to a Prior Candidate – Goldmine or Landmine?

If you’re in HR or a recruiter, you’ve had offers declined. What I find absolutely enchanting about such a miserable outcome is the underlying qualities that sneak out during this downhill process. AND, what if the candidate who declined is really the best candidate for the job?!?

Sometimes the most impressive candidates can suddenly get nasty during offer negotiation. They can become arrogant and demanding in their communications, suddenly ask for $20K more than they’d…

Technology should not be a recruiting afterthought!

This week I read a great post on RecruitFest by Glenn Cathey. In the post, he provides his insights into the conference and some of the issues discussed during it. One topic in particular that I found particularly interesting was his take on technology and recruiting. As he had in his post:…

How to Get a Counteroffer

OK. So you’ve decided you’re underpaid. A few of your team mates are making considerably more than you.

You know you’re as good (if not better) than them, so what gives?

You really do like your job. The company Christmas party is off the hook! The drive is less than 5 minutes and your best buddies work there too…….but you keep seeing jobs all over the internet paying more than what you're making and it's starting to weigh on your…

5 Timeless Recruiting Blog Posts Everyone Should Read

With the speed at which social media moves, can a blog post truly be referred to as “timeless?”

Of course. Working within the recruiting software industry, I see first-hand how the most modern features we offer our customers are essentially designed to solve the same core problems.

Similarly, messaging designed to solve core recruiting challenges can always be seen as timeless, even if this messaging is contained in a blog post that…

International Recruitment: Why Our Language is Letting Us Down

How many British people do you think are living overseas?

The answer is 5.5 million. And if you include those who regularly spend part of the year living abroad, we’re closing in on 6 million.

And the Institute for Public Policy Research, which supplied the statistics, is forecasting the number to steadily increase by the year.

So that’s a remarkable one in 10 of us Brits. I'm not sure the American figure, but sure it's…

Beyond Social Recruiting: How SM & SEO Change Agencies’ Hunt for New Business

For most of our industry’s history, recruiters reached new business contacts using paper: yellow page ads to touch prospective clients and job classifieds to connect with potential candidates. But then the Internet revolution shifted most paper-based communications online. Job boards provided a better way to find jobs and email made client communication easier. As candidates and clients adopted these new things, recruiters switched as well.

Now, a second wave of the Internet revolution… Continue

How Strong and Resilient are You?

Allow me to share with you a story about an email I received out of the blue from someone I have never met or done business with...but would one day certainly be open to meeting. We all receive copious amounts of email a day, alas much of it is spam or material that in our personal opinions may as well be spam. So, at the end of my days I tend to go through a major delete and purge mode of my inbox and…

I’ve narrowed down my list of job applicants, but am still feeling overwhelmed…What phone screening tips can you recommend to help me reduce the amount of face-to-face interviews for only the most qualified candidates?

Putting On Your Game Face

It's funny how many of us spend more time learning how to play a video game or to hit a 7-iron than we do on taking our job search or productivity to the next level.

When we play games we compete and often play with a passion and intensity that drive us to get better and better. When we play with our buddies we can stay up all night but when we have nothing to do we can fall asleep by…

Google’s messing with me!

I am normally used to reading about the fabulous new updates on Google’s Blog and how they added this or made better that for searching. But lately I am so fed up with Google making my search life miserable. Actually, sad, hurt and frustrated. I mean its one thing to deal with my 6 year old twins saying no to everything (6.5 to be precise, lest they spot mommy saying this on the big WWW) but now even Google? What’s up? I am in no mood to be sorry or…

I Did it! I really did it!

I really enjoyed the diversity of RecruitFest this year. It was different than years past, but good in its own right. One of the light bulb moments for me was the discussion around auto-notification of candidates directly from the ATS. Well, I am terrified of it. Afraid to even check the little box that kindly offers to send an email rejecting the candidate for me. Why? I should love that this system is offering to do my dirty work, but I don't. So I tell myself I will get in touch with each… Continue
