If I were in need of talent and just starting a company one of my first hires would not be a regular recruiter. It would be a
Social Media Recruiter.
I believe over the next few years many companies will be doing the same. When it comes to recruiting in social media, it is very much a
human driven strategy. Its takes an actual person, not technology to do it.
There was a lot of talk at the
Social Recruiting conference last month about the 'tools' but…

The last few days in Australia has highlighted a strong surge in jobs as the economic recovery is on track. The stimulus package was intended to keep people working. The results were a surprise to the markets as there was an expected lag effect.
The headlines on Friday 11 December:
-
Jobs surge as recovery gathers pace (Australian Financial Review)
-
CEOs warn on jobs squeeze (The Australian)
-

'The Savage Truth'
In the world of managing staffing companies, I imagine the last 12 months are up there amongst the hardest ever. For us at Aquent, despite our market leading position, we have had to respond to declining demand with staff reductions, reduced hours and a range of spending cuts. Good commercial sense of course, and our business is in prime shape…

Saturday morning we arrived at Welingkar’s Business School in Mumbai (WE) and entered a room filled with students at tables off to the side but empty tables in front of us (and no professors or deans in sight). Our delegation only hesitated a moment before China Gorman said it was all right to go sit with them and we did. Eventually the deans showed up but the casual style of engagement for the next several hours that we spent with the students was set.
The time spent here was a…

Friday our delegation attended and participated in a conference as high powered and as rich in content as any I’ve ever been to…and I've been to more than a few.
The 1-day meeting, Leadership Next, was produced and managed by SHRM’s India staff. It was promoted as a summit on leadership for business and HR execs and 150 very senior managers were in the room. Included among them was the new head of GE Capital, Anish Shah and Arun Nando of Mahindra & Mahindra (who, I was told by…

Now I love Facebook; there’s not many days I don’t log on. Facebook is my life in pictures; it’s silly, inane comments that only my friends and family get; it’s me at my rawest: No facade, no show, just me. If you’re my Facebook friend and I’m having a bad day, then you’ll probably hear about it in rather passionate prose… But you know what; I don’t have very many Facebook friends! I won’t befriend anyone I haven’t met, anyone I don’t like, or anyone I think there’s even a remote chance I might…

I'm not a big fan of the term Community Manager. Manager implies command and control to me. From my experience of building online communities (eg Recruitment 2.0 Asia Pacific), this Manager nomenclature just doesn't seem to fit. Joining a community is typically voluntary and community members don't want some person pushing them to participate. The cold hard fact is that most people…

You may well be aware of the
HR Carnival either as a contributor or reader. The last edition was published by @MikeVanDervort on his excellent blog
Human Racehorses.
I’ve always been a fan of the Vlog. That’s a video blog if you need a translation. I feel this gives you a truer feeling for the person behind the blog and for a blogger it can be a quick…

I've taken over 1000 pictures most of which will never see the light of day, are understandable only with some explanation like a picture of a dish of chutney where I made the chef explain his personal recipe using lemon and toasted spices that short circuited my taste buds this morning.

As recruiters, we are sometimes driven people, always seeking our personal best and we also impact a lot of other lives without even knowing it. So keep paying it forward... it truly works!
Last week I received a DM on LI from my former executive coach "deep mind explorer" Erl-Morrell Stinson
He asked me…

If you read the majority of articles regarding leadership, a common attribute among the best is vision. Great leaders are able to create and convey their vision for the organization's success. Furthermore, they are able to provide a road map of how to get there. This is how leaders create buy-in among the troops and gain the commitment and dedication necessary to execute that vision. This aspect of great leaders made me think about how these same qualities apply to successful executive search…

I received a cold call on my office line the other day from a recruiter who identified himself as Chad. He told me he had heard great things about me and was referred to me from someone named Jamie Richardson. This caught me off guard & I couldn’t think of who Jamie Richardson was so I asked what this was regarding. Chad told me he had a great opportunity and loved my background for it & we should talk.
I told him I'm not in the market for a new position, but could know some people…

On December 9, 2009 we hosted a webinar entitled, "
The Anatomy of the Interview Process". During the presentation we discussed how a company's interview process is their formalized relationship building practice. Our goal was to convey to job seekers the fact that like all relationships, the interview process is designed to evolve in stages. Therefore, a key contributor to interviewing success is respect…

AS A TRAINER, I have always used various approaches to help get people engaged. We all know that this can be a difficult feet. For those of us that have been doing it for years we don't see the big deal. It's simple isn't it? Ultimately you use what best fits your personality, meshes with the audience that you are presenting to, and what can ultimately reflect the message and learning you are trying to reinforce. Am I right? Media, should reinforce and appeal to the content you…

One of my all-time favorite writers, Bill Simmons* of ESPN, credits
Rocky Balboa for ending the Cold War by defeating Ivan Drago in Rocky IV . The thought is intriguing. Communism began its decline very shortly after this movie’s release.
I watched Rocky IV for the 200th time over the Thanksgiving holidays. I was astonished by the allegorical similarity of Rocky’s one-man disarming of the…
