Last week's post on hairy candidates raised a lot of eyebrows, hackles even. If you missed it, too bad -- we're moving on!
This week

To be honest, I have not much to say about this milestone. Not much because it feels sort of “enormous” that so may people have found their way here and have continued to come back.
The term “visitor” is each time someone comes to the site. So if you have come here two times a week for the almost three years since the blog started you would be .3% of…

I keep being told that the economy is in a recession and that it is going to be tough for everyone currently looking for employment. I do not believe that. This is a country of opportunity and it always will be. The resolve of the employer and employee will be tested today more than ever. Employers will have to start focusing on the employee who is the number one asset in a company. While the employee, will have to prove there value more than ever.
Tips for an…

Dear Claudia,
If time is the constraint, how can you analyze a candidate’s level of commitment? I work mostly on corporate-to-corporate contract positions (temporary placements), and I need to submit the resume to the preferred vendor or client within a couple of hours of the requisition opening. How can I avoid vanishing candidates?
Tektree Gopi

Gopi,
I’d like to tell you that speed…

Most recruiters by nature aren’t trying to offend people as they go about the job of recruiting candidates for their client customers. However our quest to find the perfect person leads us to find many more really talented “close but no cigar” candidates that after showcasing our opportunity to and gaining their sincere interest we must now let them know that they just aren’t a good fit (insert reason here).
Of course, some people take this better than others, but generically…

1. Both are flat.
2. Both apparently have no hope of rising.
3. They have no spice.
4. They're full of holes.
5. You don't want to be involved with either of them anymore than absolutely necessary.

I'm looking for someone in Toronto to host a full day seminar of the telephone names sourcing course "
The Magic in the Method" this summer. What we'll need: a room that will seat 50 w/ a projector/sound system
I'll give away 3 free seats for the provision and oh, by the way, if anyone wants to sponsor lunch for us, I'll give them 2 seats too.
This arrangement has…

Every now and then we’ll have a client who will talk to us about their “gut feelings” following an interview with one of our candidates.
Quite frankly, that’s one of the more common challenges we run into as a Recruiting Firm especially when dealing with new business partners.
Consequently, it’s one of the most common hiring mistakes made by employers and I’d say it’s even more pronounced when it comes to hiring Sales Professionals.
Has this happened to…

I feel I am a star recruiter for a few reasons but not for volume. (Although we have placed hundreds and hundreds of people over a 12 year period.)
1. I am only as good as my trusted network who have truly become friends and I thank them first and foremost!! (You know who you are :-)
2. I take the time to really understand my client's business before I accept a retained search assignment, and only if I believe I am the best recruiter for the job. After 12 years in…

Snippet from
today's blogging...
What I found interesting about this site was much more than just its goal to help people find jobs in some of these awesome (another great word!) places - but its focus on the community of job seekers that have developed during the hunt. It's a special person that enjoys working in Yosemite during the winter... that…

So unless you been living under a rock for the past 6 months you must have heard of somebody somewhere talking about a recession or a downturn in our country. Whether you are directly affected because you work in real estate or financial sector, or you are indirectly affected because you work for an advertising-driven consumer software company, truth is you have to pay attention to what all of this means to you and your career.
We will be writing a series of pieces about how this…

earlier today
cheezhead had a blog posting regarding a monster.com internal training regarding vision and values for the coming year at the giant recruiting site. after reading the memo (which had me rolling on the floor) the posting was curiously removed from the site. i wonder if cheezhead has bowed to the pressure from either his contact or from monster directly.
for those who know joel you know he typically stands up against that sort of…

What is a 'friend' anymore? That's the question that many facebook users are starting to ask at any rate, according to an excellent
article on social networking in yesterday's Washington Post. The article discusses in great detail how the term 'friend' has changed in the social networking world, or what they described as 'Friends Next'. In particular, the article highlights how those who were very…

From a hiring perspective you could just as easily be watching the rise of salaries in China, but if you want a visual illustration as to why the War for Talent in China is so difficult to win, this
video comparison of exports in Asia over the past 14 years is just the ticket.
You can actually see China rising up like a Goliath, and dwarfing the other countries in the region.
This export increase is mirrored by the rise in…

Sourcing 1.0 (Sourcing as Name Generation) has begun to show its cracks . . . much like the notion of
CRM ("the right message to the right customer at the right time") did in the early 2000s. Frankly, most organizations we speak with that are using a Sourcing 1.0 process are just not seeing desired results. Yeah, they may be a very marginal improvement in COH numbers, but there is a coinciding cost as well. Because…

We live, work, and recruit with a fickle bunch. What they want changes from one day to the next - their likes, dislikes; their job-descriptions - products - home addresses.
Even the way we interact with them changes:
Facebook,
Plaxo,
LinkedIn.
When it comes…
