Effective Blog Comments

Great advice.....especially if you type and think at the same time - vs. thinking then typing then thinking again. All good tips but IMO the most significant is not being reactive....where you could hurt yourself the most.

Your Company's Direction - HR's Contribution

In an Op-Ed column in the New York Times, David Brooks tackles the notion of an emerging group in the United States that he refers to as the formerly middle class.

This is a vast swathe of unhappy professionals who, in their halycon days(last month), would consume lattes, IPods and SUVs with the reckless abandon of a cashed out dot com millionaire. They now find that what they had become to… Continue

The Upside Down that is Detroit

http://blog.thepacheragroup.com/

It’s a ditch that is so deep, it’s really mind boggling how we are going to get out. The ditch I’m referring to is Detroit.

Though I’ve long since moved away to pursue a career in high tech, I have an affinity for the area that is rooted in a respect and awe that goes back to my childhood. The Ford plant in our home town was one of the biggest buildings I had ever seen and all those employee cars in the parking lot–wow, it seemed like they… Continue

Sales Skills are Life Skills

I love the art of selling. LOVE IT. When I first entered

the field of sales, the one thing I quickly grew to

appreciate was the fact that anything I did to increase

my ability in selling also increased my ability in life.

Sales skills are life skills.

"There's a born salesman!" I have yet to read, or hear

on the evening news, of a lady who gave birth to a

sales person. Or an attorney, or doctor, or for that

matter an embezzler or swindler. Birth is… Continue

Gen Y Boosters Are Dumb

Audio version here

Frizzy-haired, New York-based, Canadian author, Malcolm Gladwell has just released a new book that everyone is talking about. It's surely going to be a bestseller.

And perhaps that's partly because the main premise is very simple and easy to understand: even naturally talented people need practice to…

Job Centers See Crush of People in Need

"They have little in common: Ron Jones, 52, short and strong, a union carpenter with decades of work experience; and Jerome Grant, 20, tall and thin, a Jamaican immigrant with a degree in culinary arts. But the economy has pushed them to the same difficult place.

On a recent morning, they sat across from each other at a one-stop career center here, feverishly applying for two months of temporary work with United Parcel Service. The pay was $8.50 an hour. There were 150 slots, and…

How do you feel about Personal Branding?

I stumbled upon a debate about personal branding started by Geoff Livingston of The Buzz Bin a few days ago with his blog post: I Don’t Care About Your Personal Brand. While I disagree with the overall message, he does bring up some interesting points.

(Mitch Joel at Twist Image responded with a post: Why You Need To Care More About Your Personal Brand. I encourage you to read both posts, the comments, and come to your own conclusion).

To touch upon a few of the key… Continue

Remember Ricky Nelson's great song, Garden Party?

"But it's all right now, I learned my lesson well.

You see, ya can't please everyone, so ya got to please yourself
"

You may not. Ricky was the precursor of the whole "rock star" thing. With more than 50 Top 100 hits, Nelson was second only to Elvis Presley as the most popular rock and… Continue
