As an agency recruiter, life was pretty simple. Develop some strong relationships, get some job orders, go hunting for qualified candidates. If they were “passive”, make them “active” (heh). Move them through the process and close the deal. Wake up the next day and do it again.

Stories make the world go round. It’s stories that bring us back to your favorite TV show, stories that make you buy a product and ultimately stories that make a candidate want to work for a company. The key with stories is making sure to craft and lead with your best ones (preferably as early as possible in your recruiting process.)

Despite the Fed recently lowering the US economic and employment forecasts, employment in the financial services industry is growing. Over the past 60 days, financial organizations posted more than 100,000 new online job ads – a 24% increase from the same 60-day period in 2010. New York City area employers and staffing agencies posted more than 80,200 new online job ads jobs in May, up 23% over May 2010. Demand has now rebounded from the drop in April and has gained 46% since the beginning of this year.

It is interesting how much stress there can be over the salary discussion in the interview process. If you ask me, it is the one question that should be easy to answer because it is factual. The recruiter should ask, “How much do you make?” And the candidate can answer with a number. Easy, right?

Manufacturers have increased the number of online job ads steadily in 2011. Despite being nowhere near the industry high in 2007, they are ramping up recruiting in several fields, including Engineering. I use this analogy quite often with candidates and the reaction is pretty intense. All of a sudden, they get it. That company won’t return your calls? Listen, they’re just not that into you.
