‘Candidate care’ in recruitment.
“It’s like inviting 100 people to a party at your house and then leaving 95 of them outside in…
One of the ways you immediately know when someone is junior is when they "follow the book". They talk like they're reading from a script. They greet you with unnecessary formalities and communicate with you like they "think they should". There is absolutely nothing wrong with this except that it doesn't feel genuine and tells the person on the other end of the conversation that you're kind of new at this.
On the flip side, I was told recently that a client thought I was…

So my last post was about how tough the hard knock stories are to manage some days. Today it’s more about why so many recruiters/HR/managers don't effectively communicate with their candidates - especially when declining them.

Does the following sound familiar to you?
“I met this great person at an event last night, we got on really well, and they are about to instruct an advisor to do what we do, but the opportunity just didn’t come up to ask the question”.
What a wasted opportunity
What a shame, and what a waste. To go to all the…

Here’s an interesting email / follow up I got today thanks to Employee Referrals Gone Wild, which I wrote back in April (hint – nothing on the internet ever dies). This person was searching the web for advice on how to handle being an employee referral, and came across my blog. With the job seeker’s permission I am including the text of her email and my…

Do you ever wonder what makes some recruiters so successful while others don’t seem to be able to produce great results? I’ve been in the business for a long time and worked with many, many recruiters in both agency and corporate environments. The great ones are happy to share their knowledge and secrets of success and I am an enthusiastic learner. Allow me to share what I have learned with you and I would love to hear back what you have learned on your recruiting journeys. What I have…

I wanted to reach out to you all to get some advice on filling a difficult job order. I am a new recruiter in the healthcare field (placing admin. jobs), so I am trying to develop my sourcing skills at this time. I feel I have maximized all of my efforts in locating the qualified candidates in our internal system. I have posted on my own personal Facebook page (as I know many people in this particular field) as well as my LinkedIn account. No luck. I've also tried to get referrals from tons…

As my recruitment career continues and the list of candidates I deal with increases, it becomes very apparent that there is a small minority that truly stand out above the rest, the elite. There is a very definite quality they have and that is shown in the extra level of effort in all that they do.
With Euro 2012 in full flight (never mind England, we'll get…

There's not much positive you can take from a job search, especially one that goes on for an extended period of time. It's often an endless roller coaster ride of emotions and highs and lows. More often than not, the lows linger if you let them. Your time is most often spent searching for and applying to multiple jobs per day, following up on jobs you've previously applied…

When sales executives promise clients the world, and recruiters can't deliver, you get a mixture of bad blood and toxic rivalry:
"I no longer trust the sales person to bring in a qualified and fillable job requisition. I won't recruit on ANY of this sale's persons requisitions."
Sound familiar?

It was two years ago I wrote the blog link above - I couldn't help but be amazed at how many incredible things happen on our journey of life. This ever changing industry, the ever changing talent landscape, the ever changing fads, ideas, and circumstances which drive our lives including technology and science all…

It goes without saying that networking is an effective way to build your business, or to get yourself seen when looking for a new career. Back in the day, that meant pressing the flesh and exchanging business cards, but the internet era has made that something of a thing of the past. Social networking is now the way that most people…

There were two young recruiters who got tired of pounding the phones, making people mad, fighting for job orders, being dissed by internal recruiters and HR and being one upped by their office mates who had been in the business for years who seemed to be making all the placements and all the money.
They decided to revolunitize the industry, go into career consulting and placement, get paid by candidates then offer up those candidates to companies at a much reduced rate...like…

It was 1892 in Western Oklahoma, my Great Grandfather had settled on a piece of land, not far from the Old Chisholm Trail. He made this his home, in the side of a hill for a while. As he stood out at the edge of the prairie grass, looking out over the wildflowers, locals call Indian Paintbrush, he knew he had traveled far. But more importantly, he had a vision, and he had a passion for what he wanted for his family, himself, and all of those around him.
I was born in Oklahoma, and…

I got into the recruiting world 3 years ago and, like a lot of us, started using Linkedin very heavily to find prospective candidates and work my network for referrals. Recruiting like any sales process is inefficient but the one thing that struck me was the heavy reliance on guesswork on which candidates I would reach out for specific positions. Linkedin has many great features but a key thing it lacks is giving you an understanding of candidate intent when it comes to job search. In fact…

A headhunter can be an irreplaceable asset to any candidate's job search. If you have yet to experience success with a recruiter, you may be approaching the relationship the wrong way.
1. Find the right recruiter. Don't just settle for the first recruiter you run across. Make sure the lines of
communication are open and you feel…

I was having one of those fun discussions with another recruiter last night. You know the kind where one of you says, "you are not going to believe what my candidate or my client did today". They tell you , you laugh and say, "My friend, the first story always suffers." After about 30 minutes of that we reached a learned consensus that the world is doing "weird shit" right now. Maybe we are too, but of course we didn't seem to think so, or at least i didn't think he was doing a lot of…
