I met with an interesting candidate yesterday - let's call him an Alpha Baffoon. When sitting down for lunch, he threw his folder on the table from 3 ft out, making a loud "thud" . . . which was an instant red flag. At a later point, he berated a waitress because his food wasn't "up to par." The other interesting form of body language was him stretching in such a way as to claustrophobically impend on surrounding patrons . . . and it was obvious he enjoyed barreling through the crowds like a…

Dear Claudia,
Recently I have been experiencing a large number of people hanging up on me. What is driving the increase of this kind of behavior? Is it because my searches have been targeting the "Open Source" community (more radical "techies"), or do "greenhorns" just not know how to properly conduct themselves? What fosters such negativity to the recruiting community in general?
Sal Petrara

A basic understanding of the employment brand strategy and action
Have you heard these buzz words? Dynamic company, respected and valued, or how about team oriented environment? Sure they sound great but does it really mean anything to the employee? Today what you do has a far greater impact on your employer brand than anything else. We are consumers by nature and so naturally we want to be inspired, motivated, and happy, but are you doing anything to support those…

I remember having debates with classmates regarding the question of nature versus nurture - which one is more important? Are all things predetermined by your genetic code? Is the environment in which you were raised more relevant in the formation of your personality, your likes and dislikes?
I got to thinking about this the other day at the hairdresser's. Yes - the hairdresser's. Going in for my tri-annual cut/color ritual, I noticed that the weather outside was beautiful. The…

Can anyone help me out in understanding why I am experiencing so much difficulty finding anyone with SEAM development experience? I realize that it is relatively new, but is it that rare?
Any information will be greatly appreciated. Also if I have not done this properly, please do let me know, I'm new to "blogging" and hope this post is appropriate.
Thanks to all!

Over the last five to ten years many candidates have become very savvy when it comes to salary negotiations, and they understand that when a recruiter is talking with the company that it’s not just about the raw salary dollars, but the advantages of the overall package including everything from benefits, 401k contribution, vacation/PTO and even potential bonuses. However, after reading our last blog on…

Right around July 24th jobs started heading to a new board - a board where job descriptions are only allowed to be 142 characters or less. So in a world where employers are complaining that job boards don't typically give them enough freedom, one wonders why an employer might choose this one. Why would an employer want to post on what could quite possibly be the most limiting job board in existence today?
Could it be…

Over my gin & java this morning, I've been reflecting on a comment from a VP of Staffing from a huge, publicly traded staffing-firm this last week. In a nutshell, his comment was, to a degree, a defense of the major job boards. He referred to what he believed to be an "even" distribution of talent on job boards (i.e. Monster, CareerBuilder, etc.) Now, forgive me for being a little of a math-head, so I'm going to try to keep this short & simple (as I don't have too much time and there's…

fyi - if you've failed to read all of your recent emails from LinkedIn, you might want to pay attention to this.
On August, 14th, LinkedIn will begin enforcing a limit to the number of user-created groups any LinkedIn member may be part of at one time. They are setting that limit at membership in 50 (fifty) user-created groups.
If you have membership in more than 50 Groups (as most recruiters do), you will need to take the initiative to reduce your number of groups to 50…

There was a recent posting on the ERE Recruiting Network regarding the obsolescence of job boards.
Job Boards are not becoming obsolete. As a matter of fact it is the opposite. Job Boards, just like any other evolution, fall into a survival of the fittest game. As the industry becomes more & more competitive, the winners will be the ones that deliver results and offer the best value-added-service along with an affordable price point.
Job Boards are a by-product of the…
