The Hidden Profit Available Inside Your Recruitment Company

I wasn't at the major Australian recruitment industry conference last month in Queensland (RCSA Conference), but from all accounts it was an excellent conference. I did follow the articles and blogs being posted from the conference and one in particular caught my eye.

It was Top consultants bill five times more: Study.

The article reported on the BSRP Asia research that concluded that the financial difference between the elite recruiter and the average was… Continue

Job Board Logic

I remember in 1992 when the "world wide web" (the term internet had not been invented yet) was touted as a game changer for recruiting. And it was true.....for a time. There was Monster, then Careerbuilder but two was not enough, the job board industry realized that they could carve up the universe into bite sized pieces and convince recruiting departments that they had to be part of this movement in order to get closer to the talent they seek.

And millionaires were… Continue

How to take a closer look at your candidate

Take a real look

One of the reasons I appreciate our process of recruiting more and more is that it allows us to take a real look at the person who’s applied for the position.

In February, while working in a hiring campaign in Minneapolis, I also participated in an experience that changed my perspective on life. That doesn’t happen very often to us but this weekend was different. I was part of a group of eight who went into the Lino Lakes Correctional Facility (read… Continue

Unemployment and the Government: Which is worse?

Unemployment is a mounting issue that continue to steal the headlines of papers and blogs across the nation, and the world for that matter. Jobs being lost, outsourced or simply disappearing overnight are every day events. Plants shutting down, companies closing their doors, and the most financially stable name brands we grew up with calling it quits are on the tips of our tongue. So how do we address this? The free markets that we have come to understand are the driving forces of the western… Continue

The economics of the talent shortage and what employers need to do NOW

Prior to the GFC we saw articles almost daily on the so-called talent shortage. Such clichéd headlines as “Winning the War for Talent” were commonplace. My own company, Mindset used them as did everyone else. These headlines and articles have subsided of late but the talent shortage is still there. It's like a wild beast hibernating; waiting for the thaw - which will be here sooner than most Australians think. In fact, many would argue that it’s waking now as the extra cold metaphorical winter… Continue

No one wants to follow your Recruitment Agency on Twitter

I had an interesting call from a Recruiter today. He was complaining about the fact that no one wants to follow his Recruitment Agency on Twitter. I spent some time talking about the ways you can use Twitter in the Recruitment process. But he didn't care.

We talked about creating a social recruiting strategy to interact with the users. He didn't care.

This is not an unusual situation I find myself in. Nearly all Recruiters I talk with about using some type of social media… Continue

Why are we having a jobless recovery?

The stock market is up, the economic news is cheerful, and people are calling an end to the recession by 2010. However with all of this, what has happened to the jobs that were to be created with stimulus? What has happened to new jobs overall? The ideas are numerous and the points of views countless on where the jobs are, when we will see them, and in some cases if we will ever see them again.

Searching for the north, the way out of this hole we have placed ourselves in is much more… Continue

Would you hire Gladys Kravitz?

Gladys

Would you hire Gladys Kravitz?

Gladys Gravitz was the infamous “know-it-all” snoopy neighbor on Bewitched. If you are unfamiliar with her character, you can read more about her here.

I was channeling Gladys Gravitz the other day when I read this Job Posting:

“Seeking super smart person to join our wildly successful global team. Proven track record of brilliant thinking, complex… Continue

What is Talent???

He was nothing less than extraordinary. It’s been more than a decade that I last saw him, and in all these years I have not come across a more talented person than him. And the best part is, he makes talent look simple, and not complicated.

He topped the University in MBA and got the gold medal. He set a record of 5/5 CGPA. But strangely, I never saw him reading the books. He was early to bed. You can always find him chatting up with friends.

He did not seem to have any… Continue

TWINS WIN!!! ...and an Effective Job Search

If you’re not from Minnesota or Michigan or not an avid baseball fan, you may not know that the Minnesota Twins won the division title from the Detroit Tigers last night. As a Minnesotan and a Twins fan, I’m pretty excited. The tie-breaker game the two teams played last night was one of the most exciting baseball games I’ve ever seen and it took 12 innings for the winner to be decided. But what’s incredible is what the Twins did to get there. The… Continue

Niche job boards: how to find them

Much has been written about the big 3 job boards as a place to find work. But those sites are just a small slice of the available job market. In the past few years companies and recruiters have begun shifting their jobs to many niche job boards - local or industry specific sites and online communities. Recruiting today is all about location and quality of hire.

Thats why these niche sites are so popular. Many charge much less (for job postings) than the big… Continue

Rules of Engagement In a Job Search

In military terms, the Rules of Engagement determine when and how much force should be applied to a given situation. The amount of force applied varies with increasing intensity depending on the level of resistance that the troops are coming up against. An example of how to respond to a level 3 resistance according to the US Marines' ROE goes as follows:

Level 3:… Continue

Recruiters - How are you going to finish the year?

I posted this yesterday on my personal blog and then realized something. Recruitingblogs gets thousands of hits a day. MY SITE doesn't even get half that! SO here it is. If it inspires even one person then I'm glad I dragged it over here too!

Few things refresh the spirit like a handful of sendouts. It’s pretty easy to relax a bit when you’ve got some activity on your desk. As I sit here with 4 sendouts on the books –… Continue

Why manage Candidate Experience?

For the good recruiters handling candidate experience is a natural talent. Some thing they do as part of the recruitment process with or without being conscious of it. A great candidate experience helps the recruiter in more than one way.

Better Screening

First of all, the candidate opens up more than he/she would usually do. So recruiter gets to know more about the candidate, his needs and aspirations, strengths & limitations, hot buttons or even red flags and this… Continue

The Magic of Recruiting by Splitting a Role

Fast-tracking the recruitment process, without taking the time to fully understand all the role requirements, can often distract recruiters. This dilemma was again highlighted to me recently, after a coffee meeting with a recruiter friend, who was asked to fill a difficult role.

Companies may often struggle to fill a role without being able to attract the right candidates. Sometimes, this could be a strong signal for the role to be redesigned.

A lot of my early HR… Continue

Help!!!...I'm drowning in Resumes.

Help!...I’m drowning in Resumes.

Trevor Smith, http://hire-right.blogspot.com 10/01/09

With the current economic situation having such a heavy influence in today’s job market and candidate pool, employers and even recruiters are seeing more job seekers in the available talent pool. Who among us hasn’t posted a new opening on a job board or other vehicle only to get to work the next morning with an inbox full of hundreds (literally) of resumes? If your experience has been… Continue

I Found My Mojo - Yeah Baby, Yeah!!!

How many people will get up at x time tomorrow, drive x route, drink x drink, work x plan, have x meeting, drive home at x time, eat supper at x time and go to bed at x time?

Routine kills creativity!

This was a conclusion that my team and I came too several weeks ago. It was right before I was leaving for Recruitfest and I was explaining the non traditional set up and my excitement leading up to the event. One team… Continue

A look @ Sourcing with a different Lense

In the coming years, there's going to be phenomenal change in terms of how recruiters/companies source for candidates. Just the way traditional newspaper job ads were replaced by Internet job boards, there will be major shift in the ways and means of sourcing. Given below are few of my predictions around how sourcing channels are going to change…No I am not clairvoyant I am just a recruitment consultant who says things as it is..

1. Job Boards will go under the… Continue

Why Does Everyone Hate Recruiters?

www.recruitmentcafe.com.au

A couple of years ago, we spent New Years Eve in Thornton Park, at the end of Balmain, with a great view of the Harbour Bridge. We got there around 4pm, set up our chairs, and prepared to wait for the fireworks. There was about 100 people there, one of whom was a talker. He was floating around, talking to people, most of whom were doing their best to pretend he wasn’t there. He sat on a bench… Continue

Starbucks Instant Coffee Is Here AND So Is Instant Recruiting

Starbucks is selling instant coffee. I tried it yesterday. It was good. I know what you’re thinking. Folders! Flavor crystals and all that asinine marketing, nope, just ain’t there. But, I promise you this, it doesn’t have that instant coffee taste. Give it a try

How about Instant Recruiting? That is a direction we are heading. Companies are looking to get rid of traditional Recruiters and have hiring managers, marketing and small team of junior Recruiters to… Continue
