RFP Writers: Still some of the toughest roles to fill

I have been recruiting into Asset Management for nearly 9 years now, I have seen good times, bad times, average times and some down right terrible times but one thing is always constant. There just aren’t enough experienced RFP Writers out there.

RFP writing in the past, at some organisations was seen as a “copy and paste” job. It was an area that people seemed reluctant to get into or work in.…

We all know that it is important to spend time thinking about our businesses. You need to work on your business, as well as in your business, we are told.

This is not just good advice, it is vital advice.

But, I don’t have time

The problem is that we don’t have the time, or we don’t make the time. We are busy, we…

HR nowadays is an organizational "warm and fuzzy" atmosphere. No need for business acumen.

For the past two months there has been a running discussion in the Linked:HR group on LinkedIn regarding why more HR professionals do not have a degree or background in Business. It has been a lively discussion to say the least. However we were struck by one of the latest responses in which the member stated "HR nowadays is an organizational "warm and fuzzy" atmosphere. No need for business acumen."

John Donne in his famous poem stated that

No man is an…

Wait

I have always been a fan of music.  I love all kinds.  I appreciate artists and their uniqueness.  I guess I have always been that way.  I can listen to Waylon Jennings "Ramblin' Man" one minute, "Kashmir" by Led Zepplin another, and then find myself dialed into XM Radio listening to The Highway all day long.

I was a music fanatic growing up.  Listening to…

People don’t leave companies. They leave leaders!

I have employed thousands of people over the years. And every time one resigned, a little part of me died. (OK, I lie. I have actually danced a celebratory jig around my desk on the odd occasion, but that’s another blog!)

Mostly, my natural reaction has always been a human one I suppose. “What possible reason would they have to do that?” or “What’s wrong with them?” or even, “She must be leaving for money. The fool!”

But I grew wiser as the years rolled by.

Mostly,…

3 Ways Contractors Provide Value to Companies

In the current employment environment, you likely won't have to tell many client companies what contractors can do for them. They already get it. They want the flexibility and cost savings that contract staffing offers and are actively pursuing contractors.

But there are still a few employers out there that don't understand why they should use contractors and often question the cost. With these clients, recruiter Mario Fidanzi of MedTeam Staffing says recruiters…

Dear Candidate, I Love You

They're in your sights and now it's time to reel 'em in.

There is no better feeling for a recruiter than finding that perfect candidate (except maybe when they accept an offer). But sometimes that perfect person is working in some other office. How to get them to notice you?…

"Staffing Agencies" posting profiles on job boards

Has anyone come across this? I'm just curious how many agencies/recruiters are doing this and what the general consensus is on this practice?

Example - Staffing company posts a profile on Dice.  You come across the profile and think, "Wow this person looks great!"  You call the number provided and what ya know its a "recruiter" fishing for a lead telling you that the candidate is one their consultants.

I cant tell you how frustrating this is and wonder if this is becoming…

Do Your Employees Even Need a Social Media Policy?

Social media policies weren’t something companies even needed to deal with just a few short years ago. Now they’re a hot topic for most HR pros, especially if you’re the first one hiring in your company. Setting up an HR Department requires thinking through this potentially thorny issue. And it’s not just for small companies, when attracting the right talent, all companies need to recognize the importance of…

Finding freelance sourcers

I participated in an online training event recently and several speakers suggested the use of freelance sourcers for small recruitment firms.

Is anyone familar with an organized list of sourcers offering services in the US?  Can anyone recommend sourcers they have worked with and were happy with the results?

Commments on fees would also be helpful.

You can contact me directly (and not via this posting) if desired via my listing on the recruiting blogs site.

Thanks…

Resigning My Position As Career Coach of the Universe

You win, universe. I quit. I hereby resign as career coach helping the wayward un/under-employed. You know I feel a responsibility – a moral obligation, even – to help job seekers. I don’t mean candidates for my company – I mean job seekers who can do no more for me than say thank you. I just think it’s the right thing to do – to offer help and career guidance when and where I can. I've reviewed hundreds of resumes, mock interviewed candidates, edited LinkedIn profiles, made intros…

A message regarding the benefits of a good Recruiter – Hiring Made Easier

Often if a company has an opening for 1 or 2 midlevel positions, a well informed and dedicated staff member in human resources can effectively address the process. This means posting the position on numerous internet ‘job board’, and spending time reviewing resumes listed on internet resume boards. Then making numerous phone calls pre-screening various individuals. Narrow the field, and set up personal interviews with upper management. Then, after all this, it is hoped you have actually…

Fooling Around with Candidates Everyday

A person recently contacted me through LinkedIn and requested some time to speak with me about their “complicated”

employment situation. I wasn’t sure whether they were seeking my advice about their current employment or how to approach the search for something else. (They are currently employed, but looking for a new position).

They referred to…

April Fool No More

Historically, this is the day to play practical jokes and truth be told, I’ve been known to be the catalyst of such pranks, albeit all quite innocent and in the name of good fun.

April Fool’s Day is said to have been started by a simple case of a delayed communication. It seems that a new year was once celebrated in early April. However sometime in the 1500’s it was changed to January 1 by decree.

Back in the day, with communication at literally a snail’s pace, it could take…

Why Your Resume Objective Can be an Instant Fail

This article is meant to be advice for candidates writing their resumes. It is not a rant. While I typically employ humor and sarcasm (the poor man’s wit) in my writing, this article is indeed meant to give my professional opinion on one particular aspect of resume writing.

There is much debate about whether or not you should include an objective on a resume. Many…

Hello I am a Recruiter's Worst Nightmare

Interesting pronouncement but I assure you you that it did not come from my mouth to heaven's ears. Several years ago when I thought about trying to return to the full time corporate side of HR a seasoned recruiter made the comment after looking at my resume. He was basing this on the fact that since graduating from college I have been in a number of positions within a number of industries. But the statement is more telling of the state of the recruiting industry then it is of my skill…
