Is the IT Recruiting Industry dead yet?

Don't be alarmed ... What better way to write my first blog on this site than to start with a Bang! I ask the question not from the perspective of a Professional working in the industry but from the New IT Venture perspective.

With powerful Social media tools liked LinkedIn, Twitter, and tons more how

long would it take me to plug into a Network of IT Project Managers, J2EE

Being recognized by your community is a great feeling!

These days it seems there's not a lot to celebrate. Having lived the life of an entreprenuer for 20 plus years I know the ups and downs of building your own business. It often means long hours and late nights only to run up against a tough economy which means more long hours and more late nights! To get through these long hours entrepreneurs tend to draw on a firm belief in themselves but they also draw on the inspiration of others who have succeeded before them. I've often strengthened my… Continue

Do you Job Search like Bill Buckner?

Are you Bill Buckner?

Ok…I admit it. I am a huge baseball guy. You may even call me a baseball geek. It’s early February and I’m already wondering how close we are to having pitchers and catchers report to MLB training camp. (Seven days or so in case you are wondering).

This time of year, my mind always…

The Ugly Truth Why Recruiters Are Horrible At Finding Work.

You know what? Recruiters suck at finding themselves work. We give out great job hunting advice to complete strangers but the ugly truth is that we struggle finding a job too.

Every time I tell somebody I’m a Recruiter, they want help finding a job. And there I am with arms crossed listening attentively while they prattle about job prospecting hardships.

Yet, the sick sad reality if I lost my job, I’d do the same thing every unemployed Tom, Dick and…

Psychology of a Counter Offer – The Trust Issue

We have looked at two different angles of how accepting a counter offer can change or limit your relationship with your current employer. I am now going to try and explain the employer perspective.

So after you bring your new offer to your current employers and they frantically piece together a counter offer, here is how the next few weeks play out in their head.

Stage 1 – Relief

They are happy and relieved that they have averted losing one of their top people. Whoa,… Continue

Ali vs. Anderson – Unlikely Competitors

Listening to Ali Velshi speak at the 2010 HRPA Conference was quite interesting to say the least. He began his speech by described how he went from being a Business Analyst in Canada to a Hurricane Chaser for CNN (not an easy feat). He went on to tell about his journey down south, job offer and expected start date in hand and how he was refused entry at US customs because his Visa wasn’t in order – all this happening just days before one of the most tragic events in…

Integrity. It’s a bit like virginity. Either you have it…or you don’t!

For all my blog posts please visit 'The Savage Truth'

I have been in business a long time. And all of that time has been in the rough and tumble world of recruitment and staffing. Having worked as a recruiter, manager, and owner of recruitment businesses all over the world, I have seen my share of dubious business practices. Indeed I have, sadly, been witness to many instances of outrageously deceitful and unethical behavior.… Continue

Changing Jobs With Dignity

So your candidate has accepted your job. You, your candidate and your client are all happy. For a professional recruiter however, this task is not yet complete. While all recruiters are trained to make sure the candidate knows how to resign and is prepared for the various soon to be ex-employer reactions that can jeopardize the deal, most recruiters do not understand the importance of the candidate leaving his/her current employer properly. That goes way beyond 2 weeks notice and handing over… Continue

On-Campus Recruiting Activity Climbs, Hiring Plans Slip

The latest NACE Index has been released and shows some interesting results. My last post about the "some good news for a change?" regarding the NACE Index seems to have taken a turn for the worst. However, the activity on campus has continued to increase. Why? The trend could be attributed to experiential education recruiting (internships, co-ops, etc.) which would explain why…

Every Hire Is A Miracle

Your Resume Has To Get Through Here As you can see, it has been a month since our last blog post. Let this be a sign for those of you on the job market that better days are coming. We have been working on some hard to fill positions that did not allow me to complete some of the blog posts that I have started. This post was one of them. The inspiration for the title came from the fact that behind the scenes of every job posting, there exists a complete network that is constantly expanding and contracting, bringing in… Continue

6 Timesaving Social Media Tools for Business

What is your "Key to Happiness"

This past week I watched Disney/Pixar’s movie - UP. If you have not seen it then you are missing a telling tale of what it means to come to what you think is the apex of your life, only to find out you have more life to live and more life to give.

It made me think to a few years back when I came across a short video called “The Key to Happiness.” It is only a 2 1/2 minute animation but it tells so much of the work of… Continue

Mobile Job Seekers

mobilejobseekers So let's talk mobile applications for employment. Why? Well quite simply because I'm tired of hearing people say that job seekers aren't ready to apply for jobs via their mobile. And I think I'm to the point where I just have to call it out and say, "that's crap." If done right, I can't think of a single reason a job seeker wouldn't want to submit interest for a job via… Continue

Is your job site positioned to grow?

Doostang just announced that they’ve landed $1.25 million in new funding. That’s not a huge investment compared to the boom years, but it is a signal that our industry may have reached bottom and is beginning to rebound.

So you’ve survived the worst. Now what are you going to do?

Do you have a plan for growth? If not, now is a good time to start – because if you don’t, your competitors will. The job board industry is like any other; you can grow, or you can fade away.… Continue

Healthcare Recruiting Strategies

A recent survey by a professional recruitment society found that many hospitals continue to use strategies that they say don’t work well in healthcare recruitment and fail to use to their full potential those strategies that they say do work. The survey, done by the National Association of Healthcare Recruiters (NAHCR)

proved that advertising strategies that were most popular among hospitals were help-wanted ads in local newspapers, used by 97% of respondents; job fairs, used by 94%; and…

DIY Market Research Part One: Field Observation

Field observation is an essential component of any serious market research project, particularly in emerging markets, but it’s usually overlooked by agencies. Now, you may not have a budget for field work but if you can squeak in a trip to an emerging market I want to give you a DIY tool set you can use to get some basic understandings of the market you're interested in.

Why do market research at all? Because you don’t…
