When does a Talent Community Become a Meaningful Recruiting Strategy?

talent-community-platform

These applicant records can become stale rather quickly if they are only accessed when the hiring need arises. With an ATS, hiring managers wade through hundreds of outdated resumes from passive candidates who are likely to be out of touch because they have not engaged for quite some time. While talent pools can become…

Agile work environment, brainstorming; do they work?

On a visit to my brother's school (he's a principal), I noticed a whiteboard in his office with various notes on the school's vision written on it. "Brainstorming session?" I asked. He nodded.

I thought to myself that I wouldn't want to have been in that room when a group of people were throwing ideas against the wall to see which ones stick. Furthermore, there were…

Compensation: Is it a Taboo Subject?

Discussion about money is often taboo, yet those who are uncomfortable talking about money upfront (both employer and employee) are starting their relationship off on the wrong foot.  The employer/employee relationship should not be a “guessing” game.  Good relationships are based on frank, honest communication.  And, the employer sets the stage first by being upfront about the salary range being offered.

Hiring managers are often afraid to show their cards first. …

Employee Coaching: 4 Commitments

Employee coaching is on the rise, according to a recent study by Bersin & Associates. Business results (defined as a combination of market share, costs and financial performance) were 21 percent higher for companies whose executive leadership embraced coaching and actively coached others. When businesses reported “excellent cultural support for coaching”, employee results (a combination of employee productivity, engagement and customer satisfaction) were 39 percent stronger.

How Do You Advise Friends That Are Out of Work?

I have a friend that was laid off at his job a while back and continues to look for work.

After getting caught up with him about a month or so ago, I must admit I left our time together shaking my head a bit.

First off, it is not up to me to judge him and/or his approach to finding another job. He’s old enough to make decisions on his own; I can only offer him advice from when I got laid off last decade and what I experienced.

So when I asked him how the job search was…

Using Twitter Hashtags in your Job Postings

On average, Twitter uses spend 21 minutes on the site each month, and tweets have a half life of 2.8 hours. There are 1 billion tweets per week. How are going to make your job postings stand out?

Hashtags are the best way to increase reach and engage with job candidates on Twitter. One tweet alone will only reach your network, and the networks of people who retweet you. Adding a hashtag to this allow a much larger audience to see your job post. On Twitter, you can also use…

SME’s Drive Growth in our Industry

Canada’s growth (and the USA) is powered by small to medium enterprises (SME’s).  SME’s employ approximately 52% of all working individuals; therefore, they obviously play a critical role in all aspects of industry and community, including recruiting.   While I can’t locate the figures to support this, I feel my assumption is reasonable: SME’s make up the majority of the non-government client base within the recruiting industry.  This makes SME and entrepreneurial spirit something worth…

What to do if an interviewer asks for your Facebook password. Just say No… Thank you.

We’ve been hearing lots lately about prospective employers asking for Facebook or other social media passwords, or asking to view a candidate’s private profile.  We don’t think that a candidate should share this information, but it is important to recognize that the line between our private online activities and our public ones is blurring more and more by the day.  So, if you are asked, how do you say no without damaging your chances of getting the job?  There are a few key…
