Ann Taylor cuts the fat

Ann Taylor claims there aren’t any overweight – sorry, big boned - fashion conscious women anymore who can afford the company’s size 16 couture so they’ve made a decision to stop carrying the clothes in their stores only online (sure, women who pay $200 plus for a blouse will happily order it online without first trying it on for fit). Analysts on the other hand see an obvious strategy –… Continue

Should You Take Risks at Work? Yes, Yes You Should.

With all the innovation success stories and Tipping Point-esque advice swirling around corporate culture, members of any workplace have found themselves in a very specific predicament for at least the last 15 or 20 years. Namely, being caught between a rock (the much touted “Dare to take risks” attitude) and a hard place (the unspoken but definitely implied “Don’t screw up”). We all want to showcase our talent and get rewarded for it. However, it seems that the stakes and the level of ingenuity… Continue

Paperless Recruiting - Paperless Job Hunting

beamME Year to date I'm paperless. That's right - I haven't personally created even a shadow of a paper footprint so far this year. Some days are obviously easier than others but for the most part it's been a pretty satisfying journey.

In staff meetings I typically have my laptop for notes and follow up items. When that proves too cumbersome or unrealistic I simply take notes on my blackberry or iPhone. (Yeah, I'm getting pretty fast with these thumbs - soon I'll have the mad… Continue

The Dirty Words Recruiters Use

Let me start by saying, I love the recruiting business. Our business has provided my family and I (wife and 4 kids - all 5 and under!!), with an excellent living. In the past several years I have been more on the management side and given the opportunity to train and develop many new recruiters within both the corporate and agency side.

Over the years there are several words, words that I consider "dirty words", that I have seen destroy personal success and production. No recruiter… Continue

Be the Solution

Take a step back from the job seeker perspective and take a look at the hiring manager”s perspective. The hiring manager is hiring because he has a problem. He either is in need of additional help or he is not satisfied with an employee and he wants to replace that employee. The hiring manager has a problem, you may not know exactly what the problem is but he is looking for a solution to his problem so he is hiring.

The challenge for the interviewee is to be the solution. The hiring… Continue
