Changing workplace attitudes? I'll say!

Employee attitudes always change and evolve, but typically it lines up with the direction of upper management or as specific managers and/or co-workers come and go. However I had a unique (if not bizarre) view into the IT marketplace thanks to a friend of mine recently.

At lunch last week he had just announced his imminent departure from his fortune 500 employer as they were going through some “downsizing”. As everyone began to pass along their sympathies he said (and I quote) “I’m… Continue

My Face Ain't in No Book

“To be honest, my face is in no book, I have no space, I’m neither linked in, nor linked out. I just don’t have any interest in social networking. But this person will be making a decision as to whether or not my resume should be forwarded to a hiring manager. Help!!”

I'm always wondering how many recruiters speak to their employees and candidates about job search. Pretty sure if they did, these recruiters might just change some of their policies, processes, and… Continue

The Walk In The Garden: A Tribute To Flight 93

I left work today with some deep thoughts about my life and all that occurred this past year, September 11 is a wonderful time to think. In my last blog post I wrote about West Valley College and the Memorial Garden where I planned to go today dedicated to those who died on September 11, again two of West Valley College's alumni Mark Bingham, and Nicole Miller both had connections there. I went there this evening after some inward soul searching. Work was especially inspiring today, as I spoke… Continue

Skates, Skirts and Scars... Okay, I'm "Attracted."

Roller Derby Round up your undead posse and kick up your spurs with the ladies of Assassination City Roller Derby as they host the zombie cowboy themed prebout party...

Attracted yet? Hmm... Try this...

"Skates, Skirts, Scars... Yes action fans, you heard it right - roller derby!" or maybe "...tight T-shirts, punk hair and knee socks are combined with a determined stance and padding tough enough to protect a football player."

Like it or lump it,… Continue

Driving Back from OnRec...thoughts on the fly

Getting drive time with Dan Hughes (Broadlook co-founder) always gets my mind going. After seeing a horrendous traffic jam, which I avoided, I thought of an analogy to describe what Broadlook brings to the market. Here is… Continue

9/11 - Take a moment of silence

Let's take a moment of silence for those who innocently passed on 9/11 ... I was one of the lucky ones.

The nightmare will never go away with time it gets easier.

Evaluating a Company Employee/Employer Brand

Google is the antithesis of branding. If Coca-Cola were breaking into today's soda market and plopped white unmarked cans on the grocery shelf that were labeled "Hypothesis" without benefit of any descriptors, pre-launch advertising or "buzz", they would fail miserably.

Your personal experiences while walking the aisles of your local grocery store is identical to an active job search. You have made a conscious decision to go to the store/find a job. You have an idea of what it is you… Continue

Thoughts In The Wake of September 11, 2008: Lessons Learned in the Last 7 Years

Well, It is about 12 midnight in CA which means it is now September 11, 2008. It is truly hard to believe it has been 7 years. I remember where I was that fatefull day 7 years ago, getting ready to go to a Statistics Class, at West Valley College, Saratoga, CA. I arrived at school that morning after hearing dreamily that the World Trade Center had been attacked and that the Pentagon had also been attacked and our teacher went ahead with our Midterm Exam, I got a C, but it didn't matter. I woke… Continue

Another 9/11 Post

[If you've ever read my blog over on ERE, you know I write a piece for 9/11; why should it be any different on RBC?]

For the past 6 years, 9/11 began the same way for me: Wake at 5 AM, shower and decide which Jones Beach Lifeguard cap I’m going to place at the firefighter memorial sitting outside the Squad 1 firehouse in Park Slope.

This particular memorial was never caught up in a same pool of bureaucratic quicksand that has hampered nearly every 9/11 memorial; it… Continue

OnRec – a window on the market. Change is a foot.

From my perspective this week’s OnRec show in Chicago was surprisingly good at many levels.

Attendance: The show was well attended by HR and Staffing pros at all levels, and from all size companies.

Content: I may have been lucky in my session choices, but the topics, speakers, and panels were engaging, on point, and timely for today’s market challenges and opportunities.

Energy: There… Continue

Getting A Little Testy

You: Company

Me: Recruiter

Common Objective: Find X, Y, Z candidate

I know you, your company, your product line, and your growth objectives. We've done business together for a long time; I don't want to overstate things, but we "know" things about each other. So when you entrust a key corporate position to me to fill, I appreciate it and you know I'm going to work my tail feathers off to get you the best candidate we can possibly find.

Dutifully, I… Continue
