Taking Your Top Talent Straight To The Top!

The economy has shifted; the world is changing- we all are trying to do more in less time and with less money. Less than 15% said they were “extremely” satisfied. Meanwhile, employers believe that 30% of their workers are “extremely” satisfied.

As we climb out of this recession we are entering into a brand new place, The Talent Market Place. Companies can hire top talent labor cheaper than ever before.  Competitors in your…

Background Checks

Hi Everyone,

I have a client who will probably need a company to do a few background checks soon. Any recommendations? I'm not familiar with any. I think they will want to find one who can provide the basic employment screening and offer a drug testing option.

Also, if they are not doing these checks currently, would there be a potential issue if they do them on some candidates and not others? And if they start now, will they have to do them on all hires going…

Placements for Less

Well, I made a placement today as the owner of my own career management biz with a company I have worked with (on and off) for a number of years.  When I joined a staffing firm at the beginning of 2006, they were paying the staffing firm 20% of the annual salary.  By the end of 2008 they were paying 18%, and this year, they are paying between 10-12%.  Now, this might seem dismal, however I am finding that as an independent contractor I can undercut larger agencies (they probably wouldn't…

What is recruitment?

Recruitment is the process of finding, screening, and selecting qualified candidates for a job at a company or organization. Recruitment begins the moment a job becomes available and ends when an offer of employment is accepted by a job seeker. In between, the recruitment team (or person) may perform any or all of the following tasks: creating a job description, advertising the job, sourcing, screening, interviewing, performing background checks (including references, credit checks, and…

Have you checked under the bonnet?

What’s the point with references ? After all, people will only give you the names of referees who will say good things about them (unless they are really stupid) and (if they are smart) will have prepped them to say what they think the recruiter will want to hear. With this in mind how much value do references really add to the recruitment process ?

If your approach to referencing is to just go through the motions because you have to take references, then there is…

Are Recruiters Creatures of Habit?

Are recruiters creatures of habit?

Or are recruiters habit forming creatures who learn, or fail to learn, from their mistakes?  And successes?

Only you recruiters would know.  No?

The Career Magic - It's About Knowing You

8 years in and I have been there done that.  Although much more is always still to be learned, I spoke with a former boss of mine - we worked together years ago at Venturi Staffing - this evening who still remains to this day a Selling Branch Manager at Manpower one of the largest staffing firms in the world.  He mentored me early on in my days out of college providing the type of role model we all hope to have.

Since that time I have been through my own journey discovering…

Get Smart - Private Investigators make Great Sourcers

It was rather a fluke that I found out that private investigators make great sourcers. I had been working for a large multinational who's CEO had asked me to check on a couple of recent employees who had flown the coup to join some optical networking start-ups.

The thought was that they had taken intellectual property with them and the CEO wanted to see if I…

The 3 essential elements to building a sustainable recruitment sector.

  1. Regulation
  2. Cooperation
  3. Efficiency

The boom times of the last decade and the absence of client choice until now have enabled the agency sector to submerge problems which have only been exposed now the tide has gone out. These include standards of professional behaviour, placement inefficiency and uncompetitive pricing.

The problems all stem from a lack of barriers to entry to an industry that is also completely…

Economic Times Reports on New Interviewing Techniques

The Economic Times website has an intriguing article about how companies are grilling job candidates, especially candidates at the mid and senior level,  to “call out their bluff.”

Here are the relevant portions for job seekers:

“‘Most of the candidates are well-prepared,’ says Nikul Shah, president, global HR and corporate services, Omnitech InfoSolutions. ‘Their answers are stereotypes and theoretically very good. Only when we grill them on real-life…

A recruiter without hunger is like a cat without curiosity.

Gotta love a cat's curiosity.

It gets them into trouble as well as earns them a hunter's knowledge.

The important thing is they are constantly looking to satisfy their hunger.

A recruiter without a…

How to Help Candidates Take Advantage of New Relocation Opportunities

The housing market is still dismal, at best, but it appears that relocations are beginning to rebound anyway.

Relocations took a dive during the recession because workers who might have otherwise considered taking a job elsewhere couldn't sell their homes. And companies that may have purchased potential employees' homes in…

Why Recruiters Should NOT Ignore "Job Hoppers"

A recent blog post on www.ere.net poses an interesting question "Frequent Job Hopper - Should We Ignore Them?"

For many recruiters, the knee-jerk reaction to this question is a resounding "Yes!" After all, your clients don't want to pay you good money to place…

Selling is easier...So What?

I attended the Staffing Industry monthly webinar the other day and they presented a slide

based off feedback from staffing companies reporting that  selling is now easier for most markets  and has been for about 3 months.  The cycle has started to flip and we are approaching a candidate driven market.  I

always preferred a client driven market because I enjoyed the challenge.  I am not saying I want to go back to a year ago, I just appreciate what starting out in a client driven…

What's next for job boards? Devolution? Revolution? Evolution?

“You say you want a revolution, well, you know, we’re all doing what we can.” – The Beatles

“We’re pinheads all, jocko homo.” -DEVO

These lyrics really get to the two extremes of what recruiters, employers, and job seekers think might happen with job boards. On the one hand, there are those who think job boards are on the way out, ‘devolving’ into lowest common denominator sites that carry fake jobs and offer little…

Tracking Candidates for Profit – Making Money for Your Company

I recently did some work for a large retailer who’s executives kept talking about increasing their customer base and of course their profits. While conductiong  a recruitment audit it was clear that all candidate tracking was being done on spreadsheets with zero candidate follow- up unless the candidate was the chosen one of the day. When I suggested to senior executives that they should follow- up on each and every resume with at least an automated response thanking candidates for their…
