If you are like many recruiters, one of your New Year's resolutions may be to increase your recruiting cold calls. At the very least, you probably want to increase your placements in 2013, and cold calling can definitely help you do that.
The problem is, few recruiters like making cold calls. But even with the Internet and traffic-driving social media tricks, nothing can quite replace getting on the phone and talking directly with prospective clients.…

Ok I have not posted anything for quite some time. Here is my dilemma of the day. I recruited a very sharp Technical Specialist with not only a Bachlors Degree in EE but a PhD as well. He told me the reason he is looking is the fact that his firm does not really support their TS going into to law school. I am going to be honest here. I did a presentation to one of the law firms that I work with and when the Partner ask me why he was leaving I gave him the reason but sort of glossed over…

When LI endorsements first appeared, and I received my first endorsement from somebody who was unqualified to have an opinion, I became indignant. So much so, I had a good moan on my blog and claimed LinkedIn had just had a foot-in-mouth moment:…

I admit it, I am a ‘recruiting-tragic’.
And a symptom of this condition is that I can’t help but think about the hiring implications of almost any situation.
And so it was, a few months ago, travelling with my family in Myanmar (formerly Burma), one of the most isolated countries anywhere, that I was struck with a hiring lesson that resonates across the world, in any situation.
We were in the northern town…

Those of you who are old enough to remember the TV Show from the 1960"s staring Peter Graves- Mission Impossible will remember that every show began with the following phrase:
Good morning, Mr. Phelps..... Your mission, Jim, should you decide to accept it, is to make XXXXXXXXXX. As always, should you or any of your IM Force be caught or killed, the secretary will disavow any knowledge of your actions. This tape will self-destruct in five seconds. Good luck,…

I was a fairly feisty young adult and it was not until after college and I entered “the real world”, you know the one where you have real bills to pay and real responsibilities, that I discovered the power of a positive attitude. Fast forward to 2013, now with 10+ years in the recruiting industry, and I am still sort of shocked that we come across candidates who could stand to be told, “Darling, you attract more bees with honey”, in my best southern draw, of…

Early in 2012 I was mandated by a global organization to assist them to fill a Vertical Market Director position, which saw me interview some very impressive executives in Europe and the US.
After almost 2 decades in this terrifically challenging industry I honestly feel I have experienced the most interesting of challenges, either on a macro or micro level, and with regards one of those short listed, this was an exceptional circumstance.
One of those attending was a…

I was shopping at a wholesale warehouse this weekend and it got me to thinking about how the warehouse shopping mentality has grown exponentially in the past few years.
And it’s a good thing. If you are aware of your prices going in, you stand to save some significant dollars. I have to remember to bring my focus along with my list as it is easy to lose concentration and give myself over to the massive goodies these places often hold.
The same holds true for the search for…

Employers seldom complain about the services of headhunters, it’s the headhunters’ fee that has become their pain point.
A few months ago I was a presenting at a seminar to about 35 business owners and HR professionals. The topic of the presentation was “How to Recruit like a Headhunter” and during the presentation I made the statement “if you are not using headhunters as your primary recruitment weapon, then you are not hiring the best talent in-the-market”…

It was 1997 and I was working at a staffing agency. We were celebrating the year end and we were headed to the dog tracks in Selma, Texas on a chartered bus. There was alcohol, and everybody was getting loud and crazy. We had had a long year and two recruiters had just been promoted to account managers. Everybody was giving the recently promoted high fives and…
