Three more New Year's resolutions for IT job seekers

We’re just a week into 2011, and some of us here at Agile are finding it a bit difficult to stay true to our New Year's resolutions. But as tricky as it may be, it’s time to get down to business and focus on keeping those resolutions.

If you’re an IT professional who has resolved to find a new job, you’ve most likely committed to doing whatever it takes to get THAT…

Check Yourself

I originally was going to title this blog “Got Attitude” as my intention was to write an editorial on a blog by that title featured on INC magazine’s website. Then I thought copying the title might be some type of copyright infringement, so I went with Check Yourself, as in “you better check yourself before you wreck yourself,” like my man Ice Cube once famously rapped. Here is the link to the blog:…

Candidate Referrals within Recruitment

In a world where there are so many interruptions to our daily routines and there are so many choices (especially for which recruitment agency to use) then referrals should be the thing which recruiters aim for.

I'm therefore still amazed how often recruitment businesses handle referrals poorly…

Preparing a Candidate for the Interview

You've got a great client with a great position. And after all your hard work, you've found the perfect candidate for the job! You've screened them and you know it will be a match made in recruitment heaven.

But there's still the interview. This is where it can go well or where it can fall apart. One recruiter tells the following story:

"I had a great…

What truly motivates your ideal candidate?

I think that we can all agree that the deepest motivation of a job seeker is to just get a job with a salary that comes with it.  But I think that we’d be amiss if we didn’t take a deeper look into the other motivations that job seekers have when choosing (because the best candidates choose) a position.

Most importantly, to be effective in bringing in the right top talent, you need to know what your target candidates motivations are for choosing an company to work for.  To do…

Don't let Sunk Costs factor into your Recruiting decisions!

It’s now 2011 and with the new year you also get a clean slate.  It’s time to start planning for 2011 and making decisions that will help shape your year.  When starting to make these decisions, however, it is important to leave 2010 and past decisions behind.  Take stock in the situation that currently exists in your recruitment marketing strategy and make decisions based on the present day.

One of the biggest problems I…

Tips for Motivation/Burnout

This is less of a Blog and more of a question or request for advice.

I'm 5 years in the business, recently promoted to Director (manage several recruiters), my production has gone up every year and 2010 was my personal best at over 560K (#1 in company) in direct hire contingent fees. I'm staring at my board with 0's across it and I cannot find the motivation/fire to do it again.

I have read through several blogs on the site and there seems to be little conversation on…

The StaffingU Market Demand Report

Health care jobs continue to lead the way as the recovery steadily picks up steam and, as a result, firms should focus their efforts on recruiting and onboarding therapists and nurses to ensure that inventory is immediately available the moment new orders are acquired.

The continued increase in demand for project managers in IT points to…

Selling The Dream and Living The Nightmare - or How Not To.

This is a phrase that was used by one of my recruitment clients and really struck me as a buyer. How often does this phrase become a reality? Well, probably more often than either a buyer or a seller would professionally like to admit. So why does this happen? Some of the reasons are discussed here.

1) Resources – More often than not there will be questions pertaining to the ability to resource the contract both during implementation and for the duration of the…

Do you know where your money came from last year? You should....

Where did your business come from last year?

I keep records of everything.  Candidates I introduce to my clients, the source of those candidates, job order activity, source of job orders, etc.  Nothing crosses my desk that I am not aware of the “where, why, how, when” background story.

Historically I have used the following to track sources: …

Does the Recruitment Industry suffer from short termism?

I read a blog post and the content got me thinking about the recruitment industry and how much of it appears to be very short term in its outlook. I don't mean to generalise and I know there a lot of good agencies who don' t take this approach, but a lot…
