Business trends and the current recession are forever changing the way corporations hire and retain talent.
These are hard times for finding a new job or making a career transition. The state of the economy and uncertainty has forced many companies to downsize. Yes, downsize. Not rightsize. I don’t hear clients tell us they need to hire 100 people because they are rightsizing. Companies are downsizing and in many…

I had the opportunity late last month to facilitate a NACE employer roundtable in Seattle, WA. Where college recruiters from the area gathered to talk about their jobs, share best practices and learn from each other.
While at the roundtable, there was an "AH-HA" moment when several of the group members had a similar challenge and a solution had already been created by another participant. I love it when you can watch this interaction take place right in front of your eyes - it is…

After a few years witnessing the continual buildup of fake resumes, we seem to have finally cracked the armor and have had several candidates who have presented their fake resumes fess up. We take the direct approach - "We know your resume is fake because it has all the earmarks of the typical fake resumes we receive daily. If you want help finding work, please send us your real resume and we will help you." This direct approach works more times than not. It results in both an admission that…

When last we left our recruiting hero, they had successfully completed their search assignment, cashed a fat check, and were on to the next search.
The question remains. Is it a good thing to be a firefighter for your clients? That's the crux.
Initially, it seems like something you want your customers to do-think of YOU first.
Since you're in the service industry it's logical and profitable to be perceived as responsive and customer focused.
Don't… Continue

The first time I read about unconferences three words sprang to mind – ‘All Tomorrow’s Parties’
Those three words mean two things to me (and no doubt a lot of other rock fans) – an iconic song from the Velvet Underground debut album and an alternative music festival, which runs every year as an antidote to more corporate music festivals.
Both encompass the spirit of everything that I believe unconferences should be, and none does it better than TruLondon.
I will…

As the economy picks up and more jobs come available, people are going to start resigning. With that, employers are going to counter offer. I say – Don’t do it!
Here are the facts;
over 80% of people who accept a counter offer cease to remain at that company after 6 months. WOW
54% of your current staff are looking for a new job – seriously they are. As soon as the market gains some strength they are shopping their resume.
So get ready to start countering –…

I would like to talk about Recruiters and I don't mean military recruiters but workforce recruiters. Recruiters are the liaison between employers and job seekers, a recruiter will contact a prospective candidate for a job opening that might fit the qualifications that they're looking for (as they find candidate resumes on job boards, etc), then the recruiter will speak with candidate in a phone screen and a face to face interview about the candidates qualifications and the job opportunities…

January’s jobs report from the Department of Labor is scheduled to be released later this week and based on data released this morning by LinkUp, Friday’s report will show that the job market improved sharply during the month. Large numbers of active candidates due to layoffs have flooded the marketplace requiring more vetting, due diligence and overall work. At times like these, candidate care may be reduced potentially harming the company brand.
A positive experience translates into quality hires, strengthens your company's employment brand, and reduces its cost per hire. A negative experience can result in a decline in the acceptance of employment offers, a decrease in the quantity and quality of…

I was retained by a client in December of 2009 to help build a “North American Talent Acquisition Strategy” and the subsequent “action plan” to implement what we designed. This organization is a mid-sized manufacturing organization and they have 900 employees with the intent of conducting 125 internal and/or external hires in 2010. During these talks, we engaged in conversations that circled around social media and how to engage these popular tools as a recruitment branding engine and…

The problem with being a really good fireman is that it tends to breed arsonists.
Fires happen every day: some intentional, some accidental. Regardless of the cause the call comes in, our brave firefighter responds, and puts out the blaze. Lives hanging in the balance are snatched from the jaws of doom. Awards, pictures in the paper, a personal meeting with the mayor. Hurray for our brave firefighter! Next fire please!
Apply the above scenario to recruiting. Crises…

There is some funny math going on here. Like my kids say, it's not funny ha ha.......it's funny strange! See, the numbers are always supposed to add up and make sense. But right now there is something missing. We had good production in the fourth quarter. The numbers were good for production in January as well. Number of interviews and candidates in the pipeline? All looking really good. Up and down the line, all of the critical numbers that we look at are good. Very good considering the last…

Have you heard of Cloud Recruiting? What is it exactly?
Virtualization…Access On Demand. Cloud Recruiting is based off of Cloud Computing. Cloud Computing, in the simple form, is the ability to access everything in one location. For those of you that are familiar with SalesForce.com, think of the possibility of adding GoogleWave on top of SalesForce.com and what that could mean. Seems pretty cool, right? For those of you that are unfamiliar with SalesForce.com and… Continue
