10 Steps to Being a Geeky IT Recruiter

This is my story. What I’m about to tell you are graphic details of my early days as an IT recruiter. If you can’t stomach this, then stop and read John Sumser's Recruiting 101 (actually, he blogs relevant stuff).

I was part of corporate experimental recruiting program in the late 90’s.

My job? Infiltrate a ring of IT user groups. Know them. Study them. Learn their habits and even live with them. I did just that for years. But then, something went terribly… Continue

A New Chapter

After twelve years working at the boutique firm The Creative Network, the downturn in the economy forced them to let me go. Studying abroad currently, I am quite vulnerable to any changes in my financial situation and this development hit me hard. I have found new employment at a global investment firm that suits my hours and my studies - the environment is great and the people are very nice. I can sincerely say that I enjoy the work and it's… Continue

Social Media Add Power to Recruiting

"I would rather be tied up to stakes in the Kalahari Desert, have honey poured over me and red ants eat out my eyes than open a Twitter account. Is there anything you can say to change my mind?"

-Maureen Dowd, New York Times Columnist

"Well, when you do find yourself in that position, you're gonna want Twitter. You might want to type out the message 'Help.'"

-Biz Stone, co-founder Twitter

How Small Business can compete in Big Recruiting

In today's economy, as industry giants are faltering, much of our hope rests with the small and medium sized business owners across the country. Small businesses have the ability to adapt to the current economic environment and provide consumers or other businesses with exactly what they need at this integral moment. Small businesses can rapidly change direction and point their bottom-line at goals that fit niche necessities. Big business wears the iron-clad boots of shareholders, age-old… Continue

Hire Military for Green Jobs

Why is military-experienced talent being recruited for green jobs?

The reasons have to to with military candidates' related training, work ethic and sense of service that all feed into the energy sector's job profiles. The New York Times published a good article yesterday about how companies hire military for green jobs such as in the solar, wind and biomass industries.

The Client Side - What is your Fatal Flaw?

Some years ago I saw a TV show where one of the characters had to write an essay on their "fatal flaw". For some reason that stuck with me and I put some real thought into what my fatal flaw is. It was well worth the time and through the process I determined that what I viewed as my "fatal flaw" or the characteristic that I could not change and that caused me the most trouble was also my greatest strength. The characteristic that I came up with is tunnel vision. I have it, there is no doubt… Continue

Use linkedin recommendations to help you get a job

I just finished reading Chris Brogan’s blog entry for Tuesday, called “Shut The Hell Up You Self-Promoting Turd”; a diatribe against businesses that shamelessly self promote themselves. It occurred to me that the same principles apply to people looking for work...

..Like in business, nothing is more powerful than word of mouth advertising, or external referrals from people that stand to gain nothing… Continue

You're a Thought Leader - A Song

Sung to Pat Benetar's Heartbreaker.

Your thoughts are like a tidal wave, injecting into my mind

Takin’ me to another place where, recruiting isn’t maligned

You're a leading recruiter, you’re someone who I want to be

Will you be my tutor, and take me on a thinking spree

You're a Thought Leader

Mind reader, Idea breeder

Yeah, But We're Only Paying Him $4/hr...

Alright - pay attention. Because this one is one of those interesting ideas that at a glance would seem to be either falling flat or just not getting noticed. Granted, it's no CraigsList killer or E-bay Eliminator - but it's certainly an interesting take on how to conduct a job search... or recruit.

Anyone that knows me knows that… Continue

From the United Kingdom - Frustrated by recruitment systems?

I have been, that's why I designed the Recruiters Book.

It works 100% of the time, unlike those recruitment systems.

I do acknowledge that we need them for stats, but this book is a safety net. You can use it as your handover when you have been sooo successful you have booked a 3 week holiday in the Maldives. Take a closer look at The Recruiters' Book, its 2 page a week spreads includes details of roles and assignments you are recruiting for, client contact details, candidate… Continue

Attracting Talent from all over the Web

By applying specialised search techniques, online talent search specialists are able to uncover passive candidates in the shadowy Deep Web - wherever they gather to work and play.

The employment market is generally categorised into three main talent pools, namely the unemployed Job Seekers, the employed job seekers and the passive (non-job seeking) candidate. By understanding the nature of these various talent pools, Recruiters are in a better position to attract the right… Continue

Allowing Social Network Access During Work Hours: A Gen Y Perspective

It seems as though one of the topics up for debate within the HR community, as technology seems to thoroughly pervade our daily activities, is the usage of social networks within the workplace. On the one hand, proponents argue that they increase productivity, but on the other hand, opponents say that social networks within the workplace can become addictive and ultimately diminish workplace efficiency.
